My first impression of Dr Callery is that he seems to really care about what he is doing. He has a great sense of humor and does not seem to have an inflated ego. His staff seems very supportive and caring. Of the three different bariatric surgeons that I have met, I like Dr Callery and his staff the best.
Dr. Callery is fabulous. He is dedicated, kind, and extremely knowledgeable. Kelli, NP, is Dr. Callery's 'right-hand woman.' She is intellegent, professional, and she has a great sense of humor. Laurie is an angel, a cheerleader, and the back-bone of the team. All who are in the office are wonderful and extremely supportive.
Dr. Callery and Kelli addresses all questions with clarity and making sure the patient understands everything.
I have not had my surgery yet, it is scheduled for 10/8/02, however Dr. Callery is extremely competent and has a wonderful bedside manner (testimonies from previous patients).
I do have two suggestions. First, more support group meetings with a 'degreed' facilitator. Second, the nutritional person that gave the 'initial' group session seemed only interested in selling her 'vitamin pack' for a high price and when she answered questions they were brief, and not too informative.
I met Dr. Callery at the informational seminar at his office on 7/30/02. He seems very sincere and very competent. I like his honesty. He was humorous, but very serious about complications, risks and evaluation of the process. His staff was very sincere and I felt very comfortable with the answers I received to my questions. I will let you know more after my consult date!
Dr. Callery makes a great first impression: personable, knowledgeable and has a sense of humor. He insists that you attend his information seminar with a friend or spouse. Then at the end of that night you are given the paperwork to fill out. As soon as they receive your paperwork back, they call you in for an initial consultation and go over the process of approval and surgery. You must take a 40 question test to make sure you understand the in's & out's of this procedure. At the time of the consult, you'll be given a list of specific test to have (which are a little different for everybody, depending on you medical conditions). As soon as my tests were done the doc dictated a letter and submitted it all to insurance. I was approved in less than two weeks!!
Dr.Callery has a great after-care program which includes a support group once a month as well as a nutrition group once a month. He also set up a web site on Yahoo Groups for 24/7 support. The people at the web site are great and very helpful.
I have found the office staff to be a wonderful as the doctor -- the only thing I disliked is - when you're preop, you can only call on Wednesday for a status checkup... We all know the hardest part is the wait between submitting to insurance and the actual approval
I thought he was very insightful and definitely thorough. He explained the surgery in detail. There were two things that I thought were interesting…. #1 He is a weight loss surgeon and his last name is Callery (calorie). #2 His seminar for weight loss surgery (obviously people were overweight that came to the seminar) the seats that he had were NOT fat friendly.
His staff are very friendly and courteous. I had my appointment for my inital consult at 3:00pm and didn't get seen until 3:45. As a new mother 45 minutes counts big time.. especially because I have day care issues. That was my only complaint. If it wasn't for the fact that Dr. Callery is going to change my life - I might of walked out.
Update... I've had my surgery on April 16.. was in the Pomerado Hospital in San Diego. Dr. Callery is very nice. He came to visit me every morning.
4/02 I instantly fell in love with Dr. Callery. He is a kind man who seems to generally care about his patients. I have only met him twice (for his mandatory orientation and at a nutrition meeting), but I came away with a calm feeling. I have only heard good things about him and look forward to meetin him for my pre-op appointment.
I am smitten with his staff too. Kimmi, who runs the front, is jovial and considerate. She helps you with any questions you may have and recommends answers or solutions. Kelly is the nurse and she is a riot. Keeps you laughing and positive all through the meeting. The wonderful lady who does the scheduling, (damn, I forgot her name, but she has the greatest peaches and cream complexion I have ever seen) is awesome too.
Dr. Calllery has a very great info seminar and the staff is great.. Especially Kimmy and Kelly. Everyone was right on target with getting everything handled they really know their stuff. There are a couple of people in the office that are less great to deal with but kelly and kimmy make up for it. Dr. Callery has had a ton of experience and he is very personable.
I would rate my experience so far as an 8.. I am really impressed overall withthe staff and thier routine. They have made this entirely painless so far. I'll let you know more after the surgery.
