Dr. Callery is a great guy and a great surgeon. I had no butterflies before surgery because he and his staff and the anesthesiologist (Dr. Romero) explained everything that would be happening to me. I awoke in minimal pain, and my incisions look GREAT! I didn't have any drains, and my pain never got over a 4 and was usualy at a 2 or 3. I couldn't be happier with my care thus far. I would recommend Dr. Callery to anyone who was serious about WLS, I would however caution that person that the process is long and can be rally tough on your nerves, to the point you think you will go nuts or throw in the towel.....DON'T! Dr. Callery is worth the wait! I can say that now that I have had surgery and had a really positive hospital experience.
I didn't actually get to MEET Dr. Callery, but I got to hear him speak at his Educational Seminar. He seems pretty nice and made me feel comfortable.
<P>I got to meet his office staff, all of which were very nice and accomodating. I feel very comfortable with this surgical team.
My only frustration is that as a pre-op... I can only call in on Wednesdays to get the status of my paperwork which seems to take FOREVER... Their time-line doesn't match the time line I've actually had to go through... Read my profile... you'll see.
I have no worries regarding the surgery itself.
I have met Dr. Callery once at a support meeting. He was very friendly, but looked exhausted. The office staff is great!! They are kind, and patient, and professional. The emphasis on aftercare is huge!! They require a whole year of follow-up, which to me is great!! After that year I am back to my PCP. He addressed the risks of the surgery very thoroughly in the seminar and from what I have been told goes over them again very thoroughly in your one on one pre-op appointment. 5-9-03 I got to meet Dr. Callery today and ask him my questions. He was very patient, and kind and answered all my questions thoroughly and to my satisfaction. At the end, my husband said "I am trusting you with my wife's life" and Dr. Callery replied "And I will respect that trust" WOW!! How deep, as my husband likes to say!!
Dr Callery is a great guy with a great staff. He has a good sense of humor. He is a terrific surgeon! He has monthly support groups for people at all stages of the process. His staff is extremely talented and professional. My entire experience with Dr Callery and all of his staff has been nothing short of terrific. My surgery went without a hitch, with the exception of having to have the catheter "re-installed" after I couldn't urinate. I had no complications whatsoever. Dr Callery is by far the best Doctor I have ever had. I would not hesitate to recommend him to anyone, and I have recommended him to anyone and everyone. I get in trouble sometimes when I recommend him to someone I think should have the surgery, like the checkout girl at the grocery store. Dr Callery also operated on my wife and again, no complications. I have lost 115 lbs and my wife has lost 90 so far. Dr Callery and Laurie and Kelly are the best in the business.
01/28/03: I went to Dr. Callery's Educational Seminar. He was a bit rushed because he was also on call at the time of this particular seminar, but he was very informative and friendly. Dr. Callery had a good understanding of the M.O. world that we live in and didn't seem to pass judgements. He came across very well educated and prepared to deal with all the complications and concerns that might come up through this journey. His staff have been nothing but wonderful and have gone out of their way to make things as easy for me as possible.
02/24/03: I had my initial consult at Dr. Callery's office. My consult was with a N.P. named Kelly and she was VERY nice. Kelly has the wonderful qualities of honesty and openness. She "tells it like it is" and will be the first to pat you on the back and the first to be there to be honest with you when you screw up. Having someone like this, for me, is a crutial component in a successful outcome.
03/28/03: So far, the office staff at Dr. Callery's office have been AMAZING! They have dealt with all my questions (on top of everyone else's) and have gotten me through the first part of this journey as painlessly as possible. I am currently waiting in "the pile" for dictation so my request for authorization can be sent to insurance. This time is rather frustrating because there isn't anything more that I can do to help move things along. I am at the whim of fate and the paperwork gods/demons. But, I will say that the office staff have been great!!
Still Waiting....
I met Dr. Callery when I attended the informational seminar in December. I was referred to him by my niece who had RNY in June of 2002 and I value her opinion. She told me that Dr. Callery was the "only" surgeon she would consider to perform this surgery. My opinion of him is that he is a very kind and gentle man who cares deeply about his patients. He has a caring and supportive staff. I will meet Dr. Callery one on one at my pre-op appointment on April 10th. Surgery scheduled for April 14, 2003 and I have no doubt I have picked the best surgeon.
My first impression of Dr. Callery was very positive. Before you can begin the process of preparing for surgery, all patients and their spouses are required to attend a seminar in his offices. He was very straight-forward in his information about what to expect in the coming months. Over time, you also come to realize that he cares about his patients and their success.
Dr. Callery is an excellent surgeon with a wonderful and caring bedside manner. He has a good sense of humor and is easy to talk to. He takes his time with his patients and explains everything well. He or his office staff conduct monthly support groups for both pre-op and post-op patients and he is always there to answer questions. I highly recommend Dr. Callery.
