The UMASS Dr. Kelly Program is about a year long. You go to two free information lectures they will have speakers, and the Doctors, behaviorists, nutritionists etc there to help you and answer questions.

Then you meet with the nutritionist and a behavioral med person once or twice. I also did a pre-op 8 week program with 8 others to prepare mentally. It helped a lot.

Dr. Kelly wants you to loose atleast 10 pounds before surgery. They also have a great exercise class- sorry gals only at UMASS.

Dr. Kelly and staff were outstanding. There is a free aftercare once a month program a local free web email group and I also did the 1-6 mnth 10 week after care group which was really helpful.

The hospital is UMASS memorial and they are really set up for larger patients on the third floor. Very nice staff especially in recovery... I even got a foot massage.

Gloria in Dr. Kelly'd office sent my paperwork through with no problems I was really impressed 2-3 weeks for appoval. I only paid the 50 per day deductable.

Dr. Kelly is very caring and listens well, his staff is busy but very competent. When you are with them, they put you first and take all the time needed. Because there are so many of us the only frustration is the wait to get on the lists.

The only really negavitive thing to say is the hospital room was quite noisy, I would bring ear plugs! I was across from the nurses station.

Dr. Kelly is a knowledgeable, compassionate person who really cares about his patients. I have heard nothing but good things about him. He is very personable and answers questions directly.

His staff was very helpful, especially his assistant. I think her name is Robin.

Dr. Kelly is always following up on his patients in the hospital and afterwards.

Can't answer questions about bedside manner, and can't give a rating because I have yet to have the surgery. But I am very confident about having this procedure done by him (laparoscopic gastric bypass Roux N Y).

My date is November 13, 2002.

i found dr. kelly to be very kind and friendly. i spoke with him only for a short time but he made me feel very comfortable. his staff is also very helpful. they answered any questions i had and made sure that i knew what i was getting into. at a support meeting that i attended prior to meeting him, he stopped in to say hello and answer some questions from the group. as soon as he entered the room everyone was cheering and clapping. that can't be a bad thing. i am confident in his abilities and i am sure that anyone else will feel the same.

**now that i've had surgery i know why everyone clapped for him that day at the support meeting. he is an INCREDIBLE doctor..i wouldn't have chosen anyone else. he was always around to answer any questions and to provide reassurance when things weren't going so good for me. his team of doctors and interns were amazing. i honestly couldn't have asked for a more caring staff.

I am just a little over one month out from surgery & wanted to update. Dr. Kelly has a wonderful bedside manner & that made all the difference! He was there the moment I was brought into PACU (Post-Anesthesia Care Unit) and came back several times to make sure I was doing well. Robin, his nurse practitioner, is an absolute sweetheart! She stopped by my room on my 3rd day to find out how everything was going & answered the questions I had. Both are competent, caring professionals. I recommend this practice HIGHLY for anyone looking to have WLS.

My mother is a retired RN, and she went with me for my appointment with Dr. Kelly today. He began by answering my questions and really took the time to explain things to me. My mom had questions, too, and I noticed that when Dr. Kelly answered them, he looked directly at me. That speaks volumes. We were in his office for an hour, and I never felt as though (for him) this was a quick Q&A session & then onto the next person. Speaking for both my mother & myself, we are confident in Dr. Kelly as a surgeon. It is obvious how much he cares about his patients, & I am pleased that he has chosen to accept me as one!

I thought he was very young, yes my impression changed when i finally got to meet him close up. Office staff is wonderful, robin is the greatest she is very helpful and understanding. The thing i like the least is that you have to wait sooooo long to meet with him and to get surgery scheduled. He is very busy so be patient. Aftercare is very important with him. risks of surgery are drilled into your head. I would rate him excellant.

7/22/02: Although I haven't met Dr. Kelly yet one-on-one, I have heard him speak at the monthly support group meetings and I've been impressed with the amount of time he spends. He routinely spends an hour or more answering questions from the group and then also stays after the meeting to answer more questions. His manner is caring, yet straight-forward--he answers questions with appropriate medical terminology but doesn't use a lot of jargon. He also doesn't "dumb-down" the answers. My overall first impression is of a caring, professional man who is interested in making sure his patients are well-informed and prepared for surgery. He clearly explains both the risks and benefits of the surgery.

I can't say too much about Dr. Kelly, I only met him for a few minutes. His Nurse Practitioner spent most of the time with me explaining the surgery and answering my questions. Dr. Kelly came in at the end and introduced himself and we chatted briefly. Overall, despite the extensive amount of time I have waited (it will be 11 months by the time I have surgery) I am pleased with the services provided by the bariatric surgery team with exception of my behavioral consultant who should have sent my stuff in october, but waited until january!!! I am pleased with the amount of preparation that I have been required to do because it forces you to realize the significance of what you are doing and gives you time to really ponder the consequences. Even so, I would have rather done this 11 months ago.

The first time I met Dr. Kelly was in Nov of 2000. Because of insurance problems I was not able to have my surgery until Jan 16,02.I fought long and hard against the Insurance Co because I felt so comfortable with him. I am pleased to say that the man is truly an angel and does wonderful work. After three days in the hospital I came home and it is now 2wks since surgery and I feel great!!! I have lost 14lbs and believe it or not I am starting to feel much healthier. I can't wait til I lose more :o)
Dr. Kelly's staff is wonderful and make you feel so comfortable. I would definitely rate him as a 10+++++++++++++ He is a brilliant surgeon and his bedside manner is excellent. If you are considering this type of surgery. Dr. Kelly is the doctor you want to see :o)
