I went to the seminar and boy, am I ever glad I did. Dr. McCarty and Dr. Kuhn both left a very good impression on me. They both were very informative about the WLS. I feel even more comfortable having this surgery with either of these two Surgeons after attending their seminar. I would highly recommend both.

Fantastic surgeon... great program, superb after care program, WLS post-ops on staff too, so they KNOW what its like.

I attended Dr. McCarty (I've chosen him to perform surgery) and Dr. Kuhn's WLS Seminar on November 14, 2002, and found them very informative, direct, honest and most of all helpful. Dr. McCarty (including Dr. Kuhn) explained the entire procedure including the risks, what goes on in the operating room and each person's function (patient and his staff), and what needs to be done with this tool (WLS). He also provided information regarding any complications that might arise and what's expected of the patient before and after the procedure. I was already comfortable with the decision to have the WLS, but Dr. McCarty's presentation really erased any doubts or remaining questions about the surgery.

Dr. McCarty/Dr. Kuhn and his staff were very courteous and answered any questions that you presented. The meeting was supposed to last from 6PM to 8PM, but because of the dedication to this disease, the care professionals allowed the meeting to end at 9PM. Well, the meeting actually ended after 9:00. People continued to pose questions and they graciously answered each question. I left the meeting at approximately 9:10 and Dr. McCarty/Dr. Kuhn and his staff were still answering questions.

I think a surgeon like Dr. McCarty is invaluable. He's a great combination of surgical competence and directness (honesty), but still maintains compassion for his patients.

Dr. McCary puts it best: "This surgery is not a magic trick or magic wand that makes the weight magically disappears. It's a tool that aids with weigh loss, but is accomplished through wanting a life change - diet and exercise. The WLS is a tool that can assist with this goal."

There were over 250+ souls in every kind
of shape wanting this surgery. Dr. McCarty
took quite a bit of time telling up about
the procedure, Then he also talked about the
surgery risks and how well the Baylor system
stood against other area hospitals then
national centers. He carefully layed out the
process that would follow this meeting. He
took a wide range of questions, in fact the
crowed would not let him go. The question
and answer session took almost 3 hours.
Lastly, he got us in the slot to join the
support groups and gave us a number we could
call if we ran into a problem. I used this
number once and the support was wonderful.

I sent my pre insurance approval forms in and
got approved in two weeks (United Health
Care, PPO). I have faxed this approval back
to the surgery center as requested. I am now
waiting for my first formal meeting with the
Doc.

I attended the seminar on October 10, 2002 and I was very impressed with Dr. McCarty. The seminar was very informative and I was very excited to get the ball rolling. I was a little put off by his office telling me not to call them, and they told me I was on my own if the insurance gave me a hard time.

I initially have met Dr McCarty at the Baylor WLS Seminar in Aug02. I'm very satisfied with his demeanor and his forthrightness. What I noticed is that he and all of the staff at the center really pay attention to your needs. Even at the seminar I observed the staff looking people in the eye, listening to their questions with patience and not patronizing anyone. There is a very highly structured aftercare program as well as an active support group. What I like best about Dr McCarty is I've determined he is considered to be an excellent surgeon and he has done variations of the RNY procedure for several years now. He has done in the hundreds of procedures and that is important to me. I also respect his being very forthright with his patients, even online regarding the fact that this surgery is not a cure all and major behavior modifications must be made by the patient for this tool to help in your recovery from morbid obesity. I'm going to rate Dr McCarty so far as excellent overall, his patients are absolutely gaga over him. I'm not really into that type of hero worship, so I'm going to probably be more reserved in my opinion of Dr McCarty than others. That doesn't mean that I'm not very very happy that I have been able to be scheduled for surgery with him

Dr. McCarty and Dr. Kuhn are in practice together - either one of these gifted surgeons is fine with us. Our first impression, left a lasting impression, and has not changed. We were impressed with their knowledge, skills, care and the WLS program at Baylor University Medical Center in Dallas, Texas. The office staff is great, and can be reached by phone and email. The surgeons structured aftercare program is (protein) bar-none! Meetings every month, with clothing exchange and guest speaker/topic. On a scale of 1-10, these surgeons and this program scores an 11!

I first met Dr. McCarty at my June seminar held by him and Dr. Kuhn. Both doctors are so caring and knowledgeable I knew I had found the right place to have my surgery. I had My consult date on Sept 4 and spent a good ammount of time with Dr. M. He didn't make me feel rushed at all. He answered the entire list of 5 pages of questions I had written down. He even said he was impressed with the level of questions I was asking. (I've been trying to have WLS for 3 years now so have done a lot of research to say the least)
Dr. M was very honest and upfront with both me and my husband, and his level of professionalism and knowledge made me feel like coming home.
I have no qualms about having this surgery done by Dr. M and if he asked me to leap off a tall building I would probably do it as that is how much I trust him. (Of course I'd want him to leap with me)
One of the most impressive things about both these Doctors is their level of caring. Learing peoples names, going the extra mile to make sure all your pre and post op questions are answered. And just a general overall concern for your welefare.
The whole WLS staff at Baylor ROCKS the house. If you are looking to have your surgery slammed out and do it all on your own this might not be the place for you, but if you want a whole total program with support groups, caring staff and SUPER doctors then I highly recommend at least attending the seminar to see for yourself.
My surgary is scheduled for Oct 24. It seems like a lifetime away but I know Dr. M will give the 100% care and soon I'll be on the losing side of this surgery.

He is really great. I first got to meet him through my sister-in-law who had Open RNY with him in October 2000. He was fantastic with her and with informing the family every step of the way.
I then decided to use him as my surgeon and I couldn't be more thrilled. He is a true professional and takes great pride in his work. And he takes top rate care of his patients. I am really glad that he will be my doctor.

Dr. McCarty is a surgical oncologist. He is very excited about doing the weight-loss surgery. He is young and prefers the lap RNY, I think. The first step with him is to attend a seminar with both doctors there - Dr. Kuhn, too. All questions are answered. Next step is insurance approval. He does surgery at Baylor University Medical Center -top notch. Next step is an appointment with your doc. He answers ALL questions very truthfully. He is very honest. We asked if he was a Christian, and he said he was. You are advised to attend the Nutrition Class and possibly see Dr. Crumpacker (psychiatrist, I think). Baylor has a support group that meets every month, too. Since I traveled so far (5 hours) to have Dr. McCarty, I don't go to their support groups. The staff is overwhelmed. They are developing a new Bariatric Center. Chris Arrowsmith is no longer with them. They now have Megan. She is wonderful. The staff is very nice, but does not seem really organized due to the volume of requests for WLS. They are trying to fix the problems. I would rate Dr. Todd McCarty as a 10 (looks, too)!!! I stayed in recovery all day and all night. A resident visited me in the hospital. I got out of the hospital the next day. I had a bad day with depression when I returned home. Dr. McCarty called me right back. I have heard that Dr. Kuhn has a better bedside manner, but I loved McCarty.
