The Surgical Weight Loss Institute of Kansas City Bariatric Center
I really didnt know what to exspect of Dr da la Torre because I have heard you either like him or you dont - and most people didnt like his bed side manner but still used him as their surgeon. I personally really liked him, he was so confident in his skill that you knew you were in the right place. And yes he was very serious, but this surgery and decision is also very serious so I would exspect nothing less from a professional. I just thank God that Dr da la Torre and Dr Scott have expanded and now do the surgeries in Columbia also. And because I chose to have it done there I will do all my after care in Columbia with Dr Scott. What a relief! I do think these two are miracle workers or dream makers - because they are touching lives with every surgery they do - I am so blessed to be one of the lucky ones.
I like Dr Scott. His staff has been very supportive. He requires you adhere to the guidelines of diet in what to do, when to do it, and in the amount they tell you to do it.
He wants to you see the first week after surgery and at one month. After that you see the dietician at 3 months, 6 months, and a year. The staff is always willing to help answer questions and talk through any issues you may have.
I found Dr. Scott to be an amazing educator during his lecture on obesity and after meeting him, I found him to be very kind and caring. He answered my questions completely and put me at ease about the surgery. I felt totally prepared for my surgery and post op care. Dr. Scott and his office are wonderful! I have worked in the medical field for 20 years and feel he is at the top of his field.
AT the time I had surgery Nov. 1999 Dr. Scott was one of the few Drs. in my area doing the surgery. There were good reviews of him on the site. I was more impressed with the office staff and the organization that helped me get through the process. The office staff was superb. Of course I have not been there since I am so long post surgery so I don't know the status now. Dr. de la Torre assisted with my surgery. Dr. Scott was kind and very informative, but really left the staff to do most of the follow up conversation and answering questions. He prescribed the diet and we were not to stray from it in any way. My sister had the same surgery RNY with Dr. Scott in April of 2000 and had the same good experience I did. I have since heard - whether right or wrong that he does not do surgery any more, but only teaches. I cannot confirm that however.
10/01/04 Haven't met Dr. De La Torre yet, however, I have spoke to his nurse, Nancy. She hasn't failed to come through for me yet. I pray things continue the same way.
10/14/04 Met Nancy and Dr. de la Torre today. Nancy was very informative. She spoke with our group for several hours. She walked us throught what to expect before, during and after surgery.
Also met Dr. de la Torre. He spoke for about an hour, then took questions. I was full of questions, but felt like an idiot if I would have asked all of them...so I went to obesity help friends and asked them. I should have just ask them...but I couldn't bring myself to do so. Dr. de la Torre was very concerned with his patients needs first. His main concern seemed to be with getting his patients on the operating table and off without any clots causing problems or death. He walked us through the surgery and was very up front with the risks.
I will rate him after surgery...however, so far it would have to be a 8...but just because his schedule is so busy that he didn't have time to meet with each of us individually. It would definately have been better if "group" was on a different day than when post op paients have office visits.
Will update more after my surgery.
He is very kind, especially for a surgeon with his good reputation.
So far I have only seen him once, for my pre surgery visit. I might have talked to him in the surgery, before I was under or after, but I can’t remember. I wish I would have seen him in the hospital after that. I was seen by a doctor each day but it was never Dr. De La Torre. I should see him for my 1 week post op check up.
As of this date I haven't offically met Dr. Scott. I went to a seminar he gave in Columbia recently and I throughly enjoyed listening to him. I have read and heard nothing but "GOOD and POSITIVE" about Dr. Scott and Dr. de la Torre. I fell I am in the best hands available. I will update more after I have met him personally which is Oct. 6th, 2004
Oct. 7, 2004.......I met with Dr. Scott yesterday and I really like him. He was very informative and nice. He actualy listens when you are speaking to him. He looks you in the eye when you speak to him or he is speaking to you. I find this as an important indicator if someone is really listening to what you are saying. I now know after meeting Dr. Scott I have nothing to worry about, he will take excellent care of me.
First of all, I was very impressed by the structure of the program my surgeon offered. From the first contact through aftercare, they give you step-by-step instructions. Plus, any questions are answered with just one phone call and they are open to anything you want to ask! Dr. de la Torre was very honest and forthright about the benefits and risks of the surgery. He too, asked many times if I had any questions. I would rate my surgeon, his office staff, and their program A+!
