The Kane Center Bariatric Center
I was happy with him. He and Dr. Verseman did my surgery. I found that Dr. Verseman was better for me. He was there almost everyday of my 32 day stay. I love the office staff they are all very nice and do remember me everytime I go in to see the doctor. There was really nothing I did not like about the Dr.'s and the office personal. All the doctors are wonderful in their own way.All the doctors and nurses are there for you when you need them for aftercare.Yes, I do belive all the doctors have their own aftercare program for their patients and they give the one that fits the patient. They went over it very well they want to make sure you have the full understanding of what you are about to do. It took Dr. Rantis a month after I saw him to let me have the surgery. I would say he cares very much for his patients and wants to do what is right for them.Surgical competence is better for him.
Dr. Rantis was friendly yet to the point. He did a thorough history and exam on my first visit. He definitely knows what he is doing and can explain things very well. He is attentive and gets back to you quickly when called.
I saw him at the New Self Bariatrics initial seminar and then at this appointment. So far my impression of him has remained positive.
The office staff is very nice but there needs to be more education done in the office by a nurse. The doctor does a lot of the education but the education needs to be more detailed and a nurse in his practice could do this.
Pre-op care: need to see dietician, psychologist, sleep apnea doctor, have blood work, EKG, ultrasound, and upper GI. They also have you boost your immune system the week before surgery by drinking specially formulated beverages. I like this proactive, more holistic approach to helping prevent infections.
What do I like most about him-he explains things well and follows up with you in a timely fashion.
What do I like least about him-he's not warm & fuzzy-more professional/business like. But he knows his stuff and he is NOT rude or demeaning like some physicians! And he's a doctor you can work and converse with.
For future patients-if you like a warm fuzzy doctor, he may not be it. He is the doctor in this practice with the most experience with Lap Band surgery and though he may be more to the point-he cares and answers your questions well.
Aftercare-they require attendance at their support groups and stress the need to call them with any questions or problems before & especially after surgery. They are concerned about you and do not want you to wait to call or go to ER if experiencing problems after surgery. They haven't really gone through when the post-op appointments are yet. I think they need to spell out their aftercare program more in written form and in the initial visit education.
The risks of surgery were thoroughly addressed in the initial marketing seminar that he did. He also thoroughly went through them during the office visit. You also sign a Lap-Band consent with the risks written out.
Overall, Dr. Rantis is an excellent doctor with an excellent reputation and good Lap-Band experience. I'm looking forward to my surgery with him.
I believe, as a RN, that having surgical competence and a decent bedside manner is best. Obviously, you want someone with a lot of experience that does the procedure you wish very frequently. You want them to have a low complication rate and the hospital you'll be at, to have low infection rates. In regards to your hospital, you want decent nurse to patient ratios and you want to make sure the unit you'll be taken to after surgery has nurses that are trained in post-op bariatrics and the needs of bariatric patients. Also, make sure the hospital isn't new at doing bariatric surgery-you want an operating room team that knows what they are doing. As for bedside manner, some doctors have a hard time with this but if they are rude, demeaning, and/or unattentive and cannot or will not answer your questions to your satisfaction-go elsewhere. Dr. Rantis has a decent bedside manner and good surgical skill reputation.
***5 days until surgery and I really must let everyone how impressed I've been with Dr. Rantis. When I call with questions, he's called me back the same day after his office hours and is very thorough with his answers and makes sure you understand what he's said. Some doctors would just call the next day or something and rush through the phone call-Dr. Rantis is definitely not like those doctors. You can tell he cares and emphasizes good communication with his patients.
****5 days post-op....Dr. Rantis did a great job with surgery. I have 6 little incisions total all with stitches. No complications. Saw his nurse after surgery who was very pleasant and informative. Dr. Rantis is a very competent, conservative, cautious surgeon. You can't go wrong with him!
My first impression of Dr. Wallace was that he was very nice. He looked very young. I had some initial concerns about him not doing the surgery as long as some of the others, but after talking to other people who had him as their surgeon, I didnt hear ONE bad thing about him. He was very nice. His staff is great. He explained the surgery to me, how its done, the risks of the surgery -- he was very forward and truthful about the risks associated with GBS, and I really appreciated that. He told me that after I have my surgery, I'll have to come back to the doctor not long after, then at 3 months, 6 mos and a year. He also said that its important to call them if I ever have any problems, even if I'm not sure its related to the surgery, because just in case it is, they will have Bariatric Surgeons on staff who would know what to look for - that could potentially be an infection, ect. I havn't had my surgery yet, so I can't explain any aftercare or anything like that, but from what I've seen of him so far, I love him :)
Wonderful does not cover it. I have all the faith in the world in Dr.Kane Jr. I have an infection after surgery and after talking with him, it all made sense. I got scared when office people started talking about infectious disease doctors but after spending a few minutes with Doctor Kane my fears were eased. His staff is just as wonderful. I had so many questions post op and all of them were answered in a timely manner and with a positive attitude.
I met Dr. Kane Jr. on November 8, 2004. He is a really nice man and made me feel so at ease, so comfortable and made me realize this is the journey I must take. He just exudes confidence and took alot of my fears away. He spent all the time that I wanted and needed with me allowing me to ask every question I had. He answered everything and nothing was too much. I know I have chosen the right doctor for me. If a doctor can make me feel this comfortable on the first meeting (I have been known to have issues)then there is no stopping now.
I am a successful post-op (down 124 lbs) but this is NO THANKS to Dr. Kane Jr!
I worked within the Weight For Life system for 9 months only to have them throw me out in the end when I professionally and politely complained about the poor service.
I begged weight for life to let me take my pre-op tests before my insurance approval came because my company would be switching insurance carriers and there wouldn't be time for me to get it all done when the approval did come through. They refused. I then received my approval and begged them to help me get through the system faster because I would lose approval and have to start all over again. They refused. My company switched agencies and I had to start all over again in the approval process. After getting approval AGAIN, it took Weight For Life months to schedule me for surgery. When I told Dr. Kane of my bad experiences with Weight For Life he had his secretary call me and tell me to get lost. I was confused by his response and asked the secretary to have him call me. He never did.
I will be reporting him to the Illinois Department of Professional Regulations as was recommended by a surgeon friend of mine. What an arrogant man! Luckily I found a wonderful surgeon that had much more lap experience then Dr. Kane. I was since told that Dr. Kane has a 50% conversion rate (meaning he has to open up 50% of the people he tries to to lap on). I don't know if this is true but I would check it out before I scheduled anything with him. I also would avoid the Weight For Life system. It is a red-tape nightmare and Dr. Kane doesn't have any interest in making it better.
These are just my personal impressions of my own personal experience and I make no statements about what other people may experience.
Dr. Guske is a wonderful warm, caring person. My impression remains the same today. His staff is knowledable, pleasant and has great follow through. I have no complaints about Dr. Guske or his staff. They are amazing. Future patients should know that they may have to wait for their initial consult with the doctor because he gives his patients all the time they need to ask questions. He is thorough and patient. He stresses aftercare as being the most important aspect of success for a lapband patient. His aftercare is not very structured, but that is what I like. If you need assistance, just ask. They have folks to help with all issues. He did address the possible risks of surgery. My rating of Dr. Paul Guske is AAA++ For my situation, both his surgical compentence and his bedside manner were and continue to be superb! I highly recommend him.
I met Dr. Wallace for the first time today. He is very nice, and spent as much time as I wanted to go over the procedures and risks with me. He really wants to make sure you are making an informed choice.
The office staff at the Elk Grove office is wonderful, even though Dr. Wallace was 90 minutes late, they kept me informed and offered magazines and a chance to sit in the exam room rather then in the waiting room.
I may have to have additional tests after they have a chance to review my medical records and recommendations from my primary MD, but that is to be expected and I am ready to sleep for anyone that asks :-)
The one complaint I have is that there is alot of construction at Alexian Hospital, and that makes parking very difficult and even with valet parking you have to wait a long time to get out. If I have a choice, I would pick to go to St. Alexis in Hoffman Estates just to ease the parking on my visitors.
