Sheilah M. Clayton M.D. Bariatrics Bariatric Center

Dr. Clayton is one of the nicest, most informed doctors I have ever dealt with. Her staff was also VERY informed and courteous. Dr. Clayton told me about the surgery \"straight\" didn't pull any punches and told me that is merely a TOOL and that I had to do the work. Addressed all the risks and I would rate her and her staff as \"THE BEST\". I would recommend her highly. She knows her craft and has the ability to tell you all about the surgery in terms that the patient can understand. Bedside manner and aftercare are the best. I worked in the medical field for years and would say that I think Dr. Clayton is one of the finest surgeons in the field today. Thanks to her I am living life to the fullest. Thank you Dr. Clayton!

Dr. Clayton was wonderful. She explained the surgery's benefits and risks in detail and made sure I understood the emotional implications as well as the physical.rnrnShe made sure I understood the total effects this surgery would have on me for the rest of my life.rnrnShe was kind, compassionate and very easy to talk to.rnrnThe Office staff was efficient and funny. They were quick and knowledgeable and very professional.rnrnOverall I would say Dr. Clayton is one of the best around and would recommend her in a heartbeat.

Dr. Clayton has treated me through three surgeries. A gastroplasty, a hernia repair with tummy tuck and a gastric bypass revision. I feel because of these numerous operations and that fact that she has followed me over a long period of time, I know her very well. I think she is an excellent surgeon and I have total and complete confidence in her. She is extremely competent, caring and I have received only the best of care from her and her staff. They have always been a source of information and encouragement. If I ever need further surgery in the future, she would definitely be my first choice. Aftercare is extremely important, and all patients will need help. No one should be a hero and try to do it alone, Dr. Clayton thoroughly explained this to me. All pros and cons of the surgery were presented to me in a knowledgeable way. I now weigh 117 pounds after being 262 at 5'3" tall. I am a success after bypass surgery and a testament of how Dr. Clayton can help. I have a lot of health problems and they have all improved due to my weight loss. I was never falsely promised that bypass surgery would fix everything in my life or be a dream cure, but a "tool" to help me manage my weight. I don't recommend everyone get surgery, but for those who can't lose weight any other way, it was the answer for me and perhaps can help others who have no other means to get the weight off. Dr. Clayton will always be near and dear to me and I am ever thankful for finding her to help me with my quest to be a thin person.

My first impression of Dr. Clayton was that she was very professional. She took the time to get to know me as a person, and then we got down to business. Over time Dr. Clayton remained professional, but not as formal as our first meeting. I think this was due to the fact that we are from the same place on the East Coast, and knew alot of places in common. Insofar as the office staff are concerned, they are very relaxed but as professional as Dr. Clayton. They would call me to remind me of appointments, and always made me feel comfortable. There are only two staff members, so the office is quite relaxing and very personable.
If you are considering Dr. Clayton as your surgeon, you have to understand that she is highly professional and serious about her work. If you are embarking upon this journey and not willing to also make life changes, Dr. Clayton will NOT perform yur surgery. She makes that very clear! My experience was that she actually tried to talk me out of surgery by telling me all of the sacrifices that I would have to make, as well as the risks. At the first visit she gave me a multiple choice test to see if I had done my research, and after that she was open to questions about the risks to surgery. She also provided me with literature.
Dr. Clayton does have an aftercare program. It is in the form of a support group that meets twice per month. The group is facilitated by a Licensed Clinical Psychologist, whom you will meet for a therapy session before surgery. I cannot speak on the effectiveness of the group as I have only been once. I am a psychotherapist as well, and am unable to attend because of client commitments.
In terms of the medical side of aftercare, Dr. Clayton provides the patient with a listing of steps to take post surgery. Once you have decided to work with her you will receive a packet of information weeks before surery. This way, you are well prepared once you come home from hospital. There will also be regularly scheduled appointments with Dr. Clayton 6 weeks, 2 months, 6 months, and then one year after surgery.
There really was nothing that I disliked about Dr. Clayton. I will say that since the surgery I have become an independent therapist (not attached to an agency) and thus lost my insurance. The result is that I have not heard from Dr. Clayton's office, and no one is calling about appointments. As I work in a related field, I can understand because there is alot of need, but as a professional you have to spend the bulk of your time with those that have adequate resources (i.e., insurance and/or money).
Overall Dr. Clayton is FANTASTIC. She has a spotless surgical record and she is great with her clients. However, be warned that you have to be serious and she will not beat around the bush with you, or minimize any resistance you have to following her program.

Dr. Clayton is amazing! I'm absolutely thrilled that she will be my surgeon. She met with not only me, but my mother AND my 6 year old daughter this week. She's very CONFIDENT (without a God-Complex), KNOWLEDGEABLE (the woman knows her stuff!), HONEST (she lays it all out on the table, no holds barred), PATIENT (gave me all the time I needed to ask her my bazillion questions and then answered my mom's), WARM (this is a woman who truly cares about her patients and their families), EXPERIENCED (can we say FOURTEEN YEARS!!!), and PROFESSIONAL!
Ilene at Brotman - what a DOLL! She's down to earth, funny, professional, patient and just a joy to talk to! I didn't find a single person at Spectrim that wasn't a delight to be around. Dr. Andrews is a petite little thing who is so very endearing. All my fears over the psych eval vanished after talking with her for a few minutes.
This is one great team and I know I'm in good hands!

I had a very positive experince with Dr. Clayton.
She is serious about what she does but very friendly. Her staff is also great. My impression hasn't changed. I don't have any negatives other than her schedule and her location. She is in Pasadena and Spectrim is in Culver City. They have an extensive aftercare program to follow and it is imperitive that you can commit to this program as they are serious about it. This is not for the surgery only. This is a long term/life program. Dr. CLayton can sniff out the non-committing people and she will call you on it. Know you stuff (about the sugery) because she doesn't spend a whole lot of time on this because Ilene at Spectrim does this.

Dr Sheilah M Clayton is everything one would want in a doctor! She has the rare combination of being professional, competent and compassionate. Being a patient of Dr Clayton as well as working with the staff of the Spectrim Medical Weight Loss Program at Brotman Medical Center was a very positive experience for me. Ilene, the Spectrim program manager, Dr Gaye Andrews, the psychologist, and Dr Clayton worked extremely well together to provide high level professional care. All of my questions and concerns were answered to my satisfaction. The total coordinated professional team only helped to increase my confidence.
Dr Clayton makes time for each patient and doesn't overextend her surgery schedule - I believe she only schedules one surgery per day. She is very experienced and has performed about 1500 Gastric By-Pass surgeries. Assisting Dr Clayton is also a very competent surgeon, Dr Katherina Pellegrin.
The support group run by Dr Gaye is a must. You meet people of all ages, pre-op and post-op with very similar concerns.
I had my surgery on March 31,2004. My only regret with the surgery is that I didn't have it sooner.

Dr. Clayton and the Spectrim Staff::
Excellent, Professional, Knowledgeable, Honest,Humorous and Determined to help! And that was my first impression of Dr. Clayton. I had a very bad experience with another Weight loss facility. (Named Coastal Center for Obesity). From the first time I called for a consultation to the moment I started looking for a new weight loss clinic. I was frustrated to my wits end. I contacted Spectrim weight management to referred me to Dr. Clayton. All of my questions were answered, and I was fully aware of all aspects of the surgery. Dr. Clayton was blunt in explaining the risks and complications, but was also very optimistic about the success of Bariatric Surgery. Dr. Clayton's office staff and the Spectrim staff are all professional, pleasant to work with and very knowledgeable. Future patients should rest assure that they will be taken care of from the moment they get a consultation. While recovering in the hospital, Dr. Clayton makes sure her patients are well attended too. She takes no short cuts in prevention, detection and treatment of any problems or complications. Her program give all patients all the written material and a book on the surgery and life after surgery. I can't tell you how much I have reviewed her material to answer a question I had before and after surgery. The aftercare program is excellent. Spectrim has great support group meetings and great follow ups. Overall Dr. Clayton has great surgical competence, no .... excellent surgical competence, great bedside manner and a very supportive team. I will refer everyone who is interested in Bariatric surgery to Dr. Clayton. Anyone who reads this review should feel as confident in her as I have. At the time of this review I am 7 weeks post op. The only thing that would improve my Bariatric experience is if I had no out of pocket expense. There is a fee for Dr. Claytons services that coveres all printed material, support groups and the spectrim program that is $2500.00. I had to borrow money to pay her fee, but all in all it was worth it!
