Scientific Surgical Care and Life-Lyte Bariatric Center
Hi my name is Cindy and I think that Dr. F is a great and serious doctor and he get's straight to the point of things and yes his bedside manner has to be worked on but hey no one is perfect "right". I think he is great at his desire to help us in the way he doe's. He has given us a tool to work with and has made it easy for us to manage it. I am very happy with the surgery he did on me and the professional job he has done, he is very miticulous. I think he could be a little more patient with us at times and remember this is new to us and he has went through it for year's, I thank him for the new life he has given me to challenge....
The office staff is great and they are willing to answer your questions as needed. I think that if you are planning to see Dr. F for this surgery you need to be prepared for it. Write down your questions after you read the blue book he gives you and make sure he answers all of them, he tends to get sidetracked sometimes. Be prepared to be there a while, about 3 hours is what it takes. This is a very serious choice in our lives that we have made or are about to make so listen very good. Make sure that all the risks of this surgery are laid out for you because they were not for me. I learned about most of them from this wonderful site. So ask alot of questions until you are satisfied. I did think I was going to die after my surgery and was very scared and uninformed of what was going on with me in the hospital and didn't get alot of answers, I suggust if you don't feel right after the surgery to be persistant and make sure you get immediate care and attention on this matter. I couldn't breathe very good and was very very weak and it was a big concern for me and Patrick was non informative and couldn't and wouldn't tell me what was going on with me, he got upset with me because I didn't know what was wrong with me, He wanted to send me home feeling this way and I couldn't even breathe right... as it was I came home with oxygen for 2 weeks and was in the hospital post-op for a week.. This was my personal experience and not everyone will experience what I did.
I would rate Dr. F a 10 on his surgical competence, he has wonderful support groups in this area. I personally know quite a few of his former paitents that have had "WLS". I would recommend Dr. F, he is one of the best "WLS" doctor's known to mankind...
Dr. Flanagan is an excellent doctor. He explained the surgery and how it would help me. He answered all my questions and made me feel very comfortable about the procedure (RNY). His staff is friendly and always helpful and cheerful. Dr. Flanagan is a no -nonsense kind of guy and always tells it like it is, no sugar-coating. he is an excellent surgeon and did a great job on me. He has a great post-op aftercare program and is very attentive to my needs and helps me in anyway he can. I rate him a 10 out of a possible 10. He is a brilliant surgeon and a caring man. I highly recommend him to anyone who decides to have this surgery!
I met with Dr. Flanagan and was surprised to find him very nice and informative. I had heard his bedside manner was gruff. He was very detailed in our meeting of 3 1/2 hours, which I felt was a bit too long. His office staff or procedures could be updated. His is a small office and both office personnel asked for my insurance card within 5 minutes. as they had lost the first copy. He has a wonderful and through aftercare program with many support groups around Oregon. I would rate him a 10. I again, am a huge fan of surgical compentence over bedside manner. However, we got along very well. It has been a month since our meeting and I am still waiting for his letter to go to my insurance company.
Update September 11, 2000: For the past couple months I have attended numerous PRIDE group meetings for Dr. F's patients. Dr. Flanagan attended one of the meetings and it was inspirational and reassuring to listen to him speak. His dedication and compassion for obese people is overwhelming and he isn't getting rich from it either! I feel extremely blessed to be able to have him as my surgeon. He is truly a caring and wonderful man.
Dr.Flanagin is a perfectionist. If you are going to put your life in someones hands,He"s the one I trust! The office staff is very helpful, and Ive called to ask questions and they have been very helpful.Dr.Flanagin is very precise about what he expects from you and does follow ups, which is why he has a GREAT success rate.I would not like to say any one doctor is better than another, but as far as I am conserned I would do it again with Dr. Flanagin in a heartbeat.
I had an excellent first impression. Dr. Flanagan was very eager to make sure that I had all the information necessary to make and informed decision. His office staff and nursing staff are very caring and extremely helpful. His bedside manner leaves a great deal to be desired, but he is an excellent surgeon and I would not go anywhere else. His aftercare program is very structured and very successful. I would choose competence over bedside manner anyday!
I am totally impressed with this doctor as was my support person. He is professional yet personable. He is concerned with his patients and their understanding of the surgery.
My consultation with him lasted 4 hours and I did not feel rushed or hurried. I feel this man has a genuine concern with quality care for each of his patients.
He explained to me and my support person every detail of concern.
The Dr. has a great staff.
One of the Best! One doesn't get to be the President of The American Society for Bariatric Surgery (ASBS)without much experience and success.
Other than being a truely talented surgeon, one has to mention too things about Dr. Flanagan. Betadine and Bedside manor. Most of Dr. Flanagans patients complain of his bedside manor, I found it to be professional and brisk, maybe no nonsense, but still pleasant and always reasureing, however bathing in betadine, betadine shampoos, betadine creams, one almost wonders if he has stock in the company.
Over all wouldn't trade Dr. Flanagan for anyone.
His office staff is great as all are former bariatric patients.
He's very thorough, and exacting in all aspects. He's a perfectionist, and the best. Appreciated his years of skills doing this particular surgery the past 20 years. Staff is very compassionate, knowledgable, and helpful at all aspects. If the doctor tells you to do something, it's for your best interest. His aftercare is very thorough as well. All risks are discussed.
Dr. Flanagan is very knowledgeable about the surgery, he has an exclusive practice in bariatrics. Being a nurse myself, I found him to be a little full of himself. Boy did that change post op. I think he is the greatest. He accuratly diagnosed my complications, has been available by phone for any questions and in general - GREAT! He plans to retire in 3-5 years so if you want him as a surgeon, hurry up!
