With twenty-five years of background in bariatric surgery Dr Flanagan is at the top of his field in both knowledge and experience. His practice is very well organized in patient selection and post-op care as well as the surgery itself. He has a kind and compassionate style and is obviously devoted to what he does.
Dr. Flanagan spent a lot of time with my wife and I during the initial visit and later followed up with phone calls with updates and information.
I have complete confidence in Dr. Flanagan

I met with Dr. Welker in Eugene to discuss his gastric bypass procedure. I found him to be quite informative, helpful, and understanding of how difficult being morbidly obese can be. The consult was approximately an hour long and he went over the basics of the procedure, how the technique had been refined from earlier days, what the possible side effects were, as well as the benefits. It was a good meeting that gave me a great deal of confidence in Dr. Welker as a surgeon.

He has gone out of his way several times to contact me when I had questions for him, often calling in the evening after he must have been working for a dozen or more hours...

Well Dr. Welker is no longer operating for unknown reasons, I have been switched over to Dr. Flanagan, who has been great so far.

Dr. Flanagam is a well educated, empathetic physician/surgeon who has obviously spent a great time of study and participation in improving Bariatric Surgery. He spent 2 and 1/2 hours with both myself and my wife providing information and answering all relevent questions that I had. His office staff bend over backward in helping with the details that need to go over. The only potential problem I deemed worth sharing about Dr. Flanagan is that he plans to retire in roughly four to five years from now (July, 2002). Plenty of time if you plan to have the surgery soon but more problematic if done later in the future. I believe that Dr. F will make arraingements with his partner or another appropriate surgeon when his retirement looms.
Follow up appears to be adequate. More visits early on with decreasing frequency as usually expected.

Dr Flanagan is a very hyper person I think, which is good since He needs to be to keep up with how busy He is. I had alot of questions, and He answered them all. He took along time with me and that's appreciated. He's staff especially Sue, is just great!! She has encouraged me throughout all the denials from the insurance company & helps me know what to do next... their never too busy for you...

Dr. Flanagan is a great guy. I found it interesting that he not only is a surgeon but a mountain climber! He is a very direct, no-nonsense kind of person and I really appreciate his straight forward approach to getting and receiving information. He told me several times that he didn't "want me to be a hero" and to tell everything that is bothering me or troubling me physically and mentally. He spent 3 hours with my husband and I. We were able to ask all our questions and get solid answers. He is trying very hard to get legislation on obesity surgery and insurance coverage into effect. I was impressed at his devotion to this area. I am still in the insurance approval stage so I cannot comment on his beside manner. I will keep this updated as events occur.

My first impression of Dr. Flanagan was that he is a very intelligent man and I was glad I chose him as my surgeon. Everyone in his office is very kind and helpful. Dr. Flanagan is very precise in his expectations of you as a patient and he requires you to commit to at least two years of follow-up visits and aftercare. The nurses at the hospital told me that Dr. Flanagan is the only doctor they know who does all of his own instructing upon your release from the hospital. He leaves nothing for the nurses to do as far as directions for caring for yourself when you go home. He is very thorough. He visited me twice each day that I was in the hospital and always gave me time for questions or concerns. During my initial consultation Dr. Flanagan spent 2 1/2 hours with me explaining everything you would ever need to know about the surgery. He published a book he calls "The Blue Book" and it leaves little to wonder about. There again he is very thorough. Each patient receives one of these books and almost all questions and concerns can be answered with this book. I must say that many people have experienced that his surgical competence far outweighs his bedside manner. Fortunatley I was never on the receiving end of what some had described as "him being short on patience".
I would recommend him to anyone, after all, competence predeedes great personality.

I thought Dr Flanagan was great. I heard some things about his bedside manner and didn't see that at all. He is very intelligent and I felt very confident it what he is about to do.
Aftercare is a big thing to him and he wants you to go to meetings to discuss with people who are going or are about to go into this. I think it's a great idea myself. I never new there was such support.
He thought the risks during surgery where so low for me. Though he did explain what could happen.
I would rate him so far as a Dr. who is confident and knowledgeable in what he does.
Surgical competence to me means everything bedside manner doesn't mean much.

Dr. Flannagan was very supportive, and very business like.

When I went for the initial visit, neither him nor I thought the insurance would cover this procedure.

He has a wonderful staff, who are available for help 24 hours a day.

I felt very confident in Dr. Flannagan and the hospital staff is very supoortive also.

11/16/01 It has been 2 years since my surgery all I can say about Dr. Flannagan is that he is my "GOD" I can't thank him enough how he has played a role in my lifestyle change. He is the best at what he does and his follow-up is so important and he was there no matter what I needed.
