Peachtree Surgical and Bariatrics Bariatric Center
Dr Duncan and Dr. Miller of Atlanta were incredible. They treated me with the upmost respect and explained every aspect of the surgery. They even have an extensive pre-op meeting with you to make sure you understand the ramifications of the surgery and attempt to talk you out of the procedure. It didn't work with me!
Their office staff is outstanding. Once you have insurance approval - the schedule moves very quickly. I started the process in February and had my surgery in June (of the same year!).
Both doctors (plus a plastic surgeon) attend the surgery. The hospital staff had incredible things to say about the doctors and how their patient care was very important to them. They are highly respected at the hospital (Atlanta Medical Center).
I would strongly recommend these doctors!
June 13th I discoved the most pleasant experience. I met the staff of Dr. Titus Duncan and everyone, with the exception on NONE, was wonderful. I had my consultation with one of the attending physicians that will be standing in on my surgery. Her name was Dr. Speight. Dr. Speight was not the normal white coat without a personality. She was as friendly and as down to earth as everyone else in that conference room. She was very well prepared for us and answering the millions and millions of questions that we had. There was also something else I thought was very unique...we have to take a test. Before we have our surgery we have to meet with Dr. Duncan. During that meeting he will give us a little test. The test will pertain to post op dos and don'ts. If you don't pass the test you don't hve the surgery until you do. This really showed me that Dr. Duncan is not in the business of making money he is in the business of saving a fat person's life. In medicine this makes a big difference! I'm really inpressed!!
---06/08/02---After Dr. Duncan's strict post-op 2-week liquid aftercare, I was really ready to eat. Well not really eat, but you know. He gradually eases the body back into eating. I really appreciated it later once I started to read about others who went home eating and had issues. All their follow up appointments are encouraging and focused questions to find & eliminate possible health issues and correct them. Great staff and refer everyone who asks to him and Dr. Miller at Peachtree Surgical Assoc.
***Dec 7, 2001*** I realized that I haven't updated this in a while but a lot of things have changed. Most immportantly my surgeon has changed. I kept hearing about Dr. Titus Duncan from some of my support memebers and decided to at least check him out. I, of course, did my research and he is one of the top in the state of GA and has vast experience with higher BMIs all done LAP. I was impressed. I decided to go to him and then my company decided to change insurance... I was not thrilled by the thought of starting over. I DID NOT have to do anything but pray! After all the twists & turns my date was only moved by one day to Dec 12th. I am impressed and extremely grateful to Dr. Duncan and his wonder staff, especially Joyce who handles his insurance and scheduling. The surgery is explained in detail and they put you at ease with number of surgeries they have performed. All of their surgery is done as a team effort, so it doesn't matter which doctor you see all of them will be in operating room! Hats off to them, more specifically Weight off to them. If you neeed some one in the Atlanta area. Dr Titus Duncan or Dr. J. Miller @ Peachtree Surgical Associates can really help you!!! Thank you all for your prayers!!
**9/17/01** Dr. Dennis Smith's office has really been helpful!! I only have 3 pre-op tests to complete before I am cleared for surgery. I get to start the new year off with bang.
**Update** 8/18/2001. Someone from Dr Dennis Smith's office called me the next day! I really got a chance to talk to Dr. Smith's office after that brief encounter. I feel a lot better about his program now.
I got a better idea of how many procedures he's actually performed and have had other doctors advise me that he has a good reputation. Even Dr. C. Daniel Smith, says "he'll take good care of you". The other thing is that Dr. C. Daniel Smith at Emory is now asking patients to lose weight before they have surgery. He wants me to lose 70-100 lbs BEFORE he'll discuss a surgery date.
I looked at him...If I could lose 100 lbs by myself I wouldn't need surgery. I'm waiting on the Insurance Dance to be over. Dr. Dennis Smith has given me everything that I've needed so far...The waiting is what is getting to me!!
**First Impression**I was not very comftable with Dr. Smith when I met him.
It was kinda weird at first I was in a room with all these other people, I thought I would get to talk to the doctor and see what was actually going to happen to me.
I sat in a room watching a slide show...Mostly contained information I had already found out.
It was only when I got there that I realized that my primary had the Doctors Smith mixed up. I wasted 2 months trying to get referrals on file only to be sent to the wrong doctor.
When I realized this I called trying to find out if they had sent my information in for approval, I found out that nothing had been done. I saw them in April and now it's June...they hadn't even started the letter.
I'll be seeing Dr. Smith at Emory in July...I'm starting all over again!!
No one from Dr. Smith (marietta) office even called, every time I called the person over it was never available...even after messages were left.
The other issue I had with this Dr. Smith was that he didn't have a lot of experience compared to the Emory group. He had only done 36 of these surgries when I saw him in April.
I would like someone with a little more experience. He also is mostly into the duodenum switch surgery, which my insurance won't pay for. That's what most of the people in my appointment were there for.
Dr. Titus Duncan makes you feel very comfortable and at ease. He is friendly and very kind and understanding.

I was told about Dr. Duncan from a patient of his. So, I have called to schedule a consultation with him. Before I can have the consultation I need to fill out a bunch of paperwork (past diet history and that sort of stuff, I imagine). I'm just waiting on the paperwork to arrive. I've read alot about Dr. Duncan, so I am expecting great things from him when I meet him. I'll post back when I know more.

I faxed over my forms to his office late last night and received a call back from his office this morning to schedule an appointment!!!!!! Of course, I wasn't home and didn't get the message until after his office was closed, so I'll call first thing in the morning to get this ball rolling. Geez, I would love to have good news soon!

Had my consultation today. Waited about 15 minutes and then went in to be weighed and have my measurements taken. Met with one of the medical staff to have her explain the procedure to me and answer any and all questions I have (didn't have much since I've learned a TON from this site). Dr. Duncan requires a Psych eval and to meet with a Nutritionalist. After this done, will meet Dr. Duncan personally to discuss final details and get surgery scheduled.

Met Dr. Duncan at my pre-surgery consultation on Thursday (4/18/02) Very nice man. He comes across as very sincere, not judgemental.
He wanted to make sure I understand about the procedure, the risks involved (leaks and blood clots are his 2 main concerns). I asked him if he's had any mortalities and he said "NO". THAT'S JUST WHAT I WANTED TO HEAR!
Explained that he cannot tell me how long/short the surgery will be. Said that when he goes in, since I've already had my gall bladder removed, that if I have a lot of internal scarring, he will have to fix that first BEFORE beginning the WLS. That it is his job to correct anything that may be wrong internally before he does the big procedure. (that's cool with me! Two birds with one stone, so to speak)
We talked about the diet plan immediately following the surgery and what to do/not to do.
His staff is wonderful. They are all very nice and understanding. Gave me lots of information about what to do before and after surgery.
So far, overall, I rate him highly. I wont' know until I have the surgery about his competence - I'll be sure to let you know that. Judging by everything else, I expect it to go well.

Had my surgery on the 29th. Everything went great. Check out on the 30th. Dr. Duncan came in to meet me before I checked out - asked how I was doing. Spoke with my husband a bit, was very nice and friendly. I love this man - he has given me a tool to change my life for the better.
Anyone who has had gastric bypass surgery done laproscopically by Dr. Titus Duncan or Dr. Jacqueline Miller, I would love to hear from you and how things went. Please email me at: [email protected].
I am in the process of setting up my initial consultation. Please any information would be of great help.
Dr. Duncan is a very charming, kind and charasmatic man. He was extremely helpful at alleviating my fears, as well as my family's fears, prior to surgery. Kirsten (who is no longer with the office) was fantastic in getting my insurance approval quickly. This is quite a busy practice. I was not impressed with the aftercare. I was shamed into leaving the hospital, by one of Dr. Duncan's associates, 36 hours after surgery although I later realized I was in no way ready to go home. Although his staff tried to be helpful, I became aware early on that they were not going to be much help to me. In fact, they encouraged me to try foods I should never have tried. I never saw Dr. Duncan the morning of surgery nor did I ever see him during my short hospitalization. The office did have a support group for a short time that met at odd hours. I do not believe there is a current support group even though the office seems to do many, many bypasses. I wish my insurance company had more surgeons who did this procedure which would have given me more options. Overall, I believe everyone has to draw their own conclusions.
I have changed surgeons 3 times since I began this process. At first, I was going to go to a local doctor who performs LAP RNY. Then I discovered I would have been his 6th operation, and quickly changed my mind. I then decided to spend the extra money and go to Dr. Champion in Atlanta even though he was not covered under my insurance policy. I had a surgery date of March 21 with him, but changed my mind after I received a letter that said "you must make your own arrangements with the hospital and anestheseologist". Turns out that both of them are also not PPO's for my insurance so, I cancelled and went to Dr. Duncan. Duncan is just as experienced, and IS a PPO for my insurance company. So is the hospital and anestheologist. So far I have heard nothing but great things about him, and was pleased with his staff when I went for my first consultation on Feb 28. My advice for anyone is to MAKE SURE YOU READ EVERYTHING! I had a friend who had the surgery from Dr. Champion and didn't read about the hospital and anestheologist not being PPOs for her, and now owes thousands to the hospital and anestheologist on top of the 5,000 she has already paid Champion.
