NYU Langone Weight Management Program Bariatric Center
I have not met with Dr. Ren on a one on one basis, yet. However, I did attend one of her seminars. She was to the point, down to earth and very knowledgeable. I was impressed and felt comfortable in her presence. I am hoping to get the Adjustable Lap Band and am scheduled to see her May 13th.
UPDATE: May 14, 2003.
I have now met with Dr. Ren. I love her! She made me feel comfortable, answered all of my questions plus more and I have a date. June 12th. And now the wait is on for insurance approval...
I must tell you how impressed I am with DR. Ren !!! Initially, I found her to be very explicit about the risks surgery. I left the first visit ready to have the Lap band and overnight I decided that I would go for the lap rny.I called the office and she insisted that I meet with her again to discuss it. DR. Ren reviewed the risks again and respected my decision. In addition, I met with Barrie to review the vitamins and diet.
DR. Ren ordered a complete medical evaluation, including a cardiologist. I feel very secure having DR. Ren as my surgeon. She trained with DR.Gagner at Mt Sinai. DR. Ren was recommended to me from one of the top surgeons from Mt. Sinai! Basically I could have used any doctor in NYC.and DR.Ren met my standards in every way! She is very serious about the surgery and has warm and compassionate personality. She has a great sense of humor and I really adore her. My surgery is scheduled for this Thursday, April 24,2003.I have so much confidence in DR. Ren that I'm not nervous! She has performed many 100s of lap wls surgeries!! Anyway, I keep you informed post op which is less than 36 hours away!
I can only say, if you want lap surgery in NYC. DR. REN is a top choice!!She's outstanding in every way!!!!G-D BLESS DR.REN!
------------------------day of surgery
DR. REN met me before surgery to review everything and to put me at ease:) Next I weighed in @ 205 lbs, and met most of her team that would be in the operating room.. I walked into the operating room and instantly I requested that I won't feel or remember anything...IT WORKED :).....IN RECOVERY...I felt some pain and remembered to scream 10 for pain~lol..I got morphine while I was in surgery ,but I got more:) I'm a BIG cry baby when it comes to pain!!!lol.. I was surrounded by many nurses in the recovery room..I thought at first, that I had died...lol..then I felt the pain...!
Anyway,I was met by my private nurse. By the way, I hired nurses around the clock..I suggest everyone hire someone for the 1st 24 hrs!! Atleast a nurses aid..It's the best investment besides the surgery!! I hired registered nurses around the clock for my hospital stay. They worked on 3 eight hr. shifts.
Anyway,DR. REN WAS FANTASTIC !!My surgery was w/o complications:) It took her almost 2 hrs for my LAP RNY with a hernia removed!!
SHE VISITED ME EVERYDAY POST OP in the Hospital.I had surgery Thurs.and left Sat.4/26..DR. REN IS AN EXCELLENT SURGEON AND A GREAT PERSON!!! I will always be grateful to DR. REN and her great team!!!
G-D BLESS DR. REN AND HER AWESOME TEAM!!
I met my surgeon at an informational meeting at the WLS support group I have been attending in Middletown NY. She didn't pull any punches but spoke right to me in language I could understand (not so much of that physician lingo)yet still very professional. I was able to get an appointment in about 3 weeks. The staff in her office is wonderful, warm and extremely helpful. I was able to get a surgery date 3 weeks from my consultation. She filled me in on everything I needed to know and gave me an opportunity to ask her anything I wanted. I have emailed the office and gotten responses within a day. I am very happy so far with my decision to have Dr Ren do my surgery.
Hello, my journey continues and I finally selected a surgeon that I feel will assist me with this important decision, Dr. Christine Julie Ren.
I was very fortunate to have learned about her seminar a day before it was going to take place. A good friend and I went to NYU for the two hour seminar. I was impressed with her professionalism and straight forward approach. I was humbled when she told us why she selected the field of obesity as her specialty, and it showed me that she has compassion for improvement and life in general.
She mentioned all the types of procedures, including the benefits and disadvantages; cost and what you can expect after surgery.
She stresses the importance of after program care, and she stated, it's a marriage for life. I almost got on my knees to ask her to marry me....hehehehe SMILE
She is affiliated with NYU and she has a team of professionals that will assist me in my journey (Psychologist, Nutritionist, Office Team, and Nurse Practitioner).
In order to have a one on one consultation with her, you need to meet with her Psychologist first (appointment already done), then you can meet with her (appointment one week after the Psychologist). I know have sleep apnea, but I have never taken care of it. I saw a Pulmonologist for a complete evaluation and a sleep test has been ordered. I also saw my cardiologist to make sure he knew of my intentions and clear me for surgery. As you can I see, I am doing a lot of the home work and getting as many clearances as I think. Unfortunately there is no guarantee that she will acccept me as a patient, but I will try to make it an easy decision.
Wish me luck!
I went to the informational seminar on Jan. 16th, 2003. I was very impressed with Dr. Rens approach with us. I found her to be very friendly and compassionate about her work. She explained at the meeting that before we had a one on one consult with her we would have to see here psycologist Warren Huberman. The next morning at 9:00 am I called Dr. Huberman to get an appointment only to find out that I was number 30 on his call back list. I figured that I would hear from him sometime that week since the receptionist told me that he personally calls everyone back himself, but to my surprise he called me back at about 3:00 that afternoon and set up an appointment with me for Jan. 31st, 2003. Right after I hung up the phone with him I called Dr. Rens office to try to set up my appointment with her. I explained that I was seeing Dr. Huberman on the 31st and asked if I could just make my appointment now for a date following my appointment with him. The office staff was VERY friendly and they were glad to help my. I got an apppointment for February 12th, 2003. On Jan. 31st I saw Dr. Huberman. He is a very friendly man. He was really nice and understanding. I felt very comfortable speaking to him, and he does try to help you get the $250.00 fee back if you want it. He wished me lots of luck with my surgery and thats really all there is to say about that. On Feb. 12th I was on my way to see Dr. Ren. I have to tell you I had trouble sleeping the night before because I was so nervous. Her office was pretty crowded when I got there but let me tell you, she has the nicest staff that I have ever met at a doctors office. They were friendly and helpful. First I was to meet Gio her nurse practitioner but there was a mix up with my paperwork and the lady who was before me so I met with his assistant. Please forgive me but I don't remember her name. She was very thorough though. When we were just about done I received a call from my mother that my sister had been in an accident, when hearing this Gio and the other N/P came to sit with me and talk to me they were a great emotional support system and they really didn't even know me. My mother told me to finish my appointment and then come home. So I was to then meet Dr. Ren. She is the NICEST SURGEON I have EVER met!!!!! After speaking she thinks I will do well with the Adujustable Gastric Band. She gave me my date it will be April 14th, 2003 if all goes well with my insurance (United Healthcare) which I am reaaly hoping for. The only bad thing about United is that they don't cover the fills yet (which are necessary) so they will run you about $100.00 each time you get it done, but I think she said they're still working on that. All in all I think she is wonderful and so is her staff. I can't wait until April 14th. I'll tell you more after I see her nutritionist Barrie Wolfe. I have to get an appointment with her still and I will also need an esophogram. Talk to you later! BYE!
I met Dr Ren in January for my pre-op consultation. I love her direct, no nonsense approach. If you are someone who likes to be coddled and told that surgery is the "magic pill" that you've been waiting for then Dr Ren isn't the surgeon for you. If you want to hear the truth, that even with the surgery you are responsible for your progress she is wonderful. I'm scheduled for 3/20/03 for lap distal RNY at NYU with Dr Ren.
I first met Dr. Ren in January, 2003. As a registered nurse, I was impressed by her successfull mix of professionalism and friendliness. Yhe office staff was very pleasant. Nurse practitioner was very lovely and put me at ease. The surgeon answered all of my questions, and explained all parts of the surgery and aftercare. I am scheduled for March 20, but my anxiety about the surgery and hospitalization grows every day.
I met Dr. Ren in August 2002, at her
informational session in NY. My
impression of her was of great admiration.
She was so down to earth, great sense of
humor and very warm and nice. Besides having
a great bedside manner, I felt she had such
compassion for everyone in that room. That
was so comforting. I truly believe she gets
total satisfaction from helping obese
people reach their goals. When I went for my
consultation she was very professional and she was
completely up front and honest about the risks
of surgery, but she emphasized there is a huge
risk being so overweight. She also was very
serious about post-op appts. I had the lap-band
so she said a few times, even after surgery, I
want to see you every 4-6 weeks for one
year. Her entire staff was so nice. She's a
brillant surgeon with hands of gold and I
would recommend her to anyone.
Like all of her patients, I think Dr. Ren is fantastic. Although she is quite thin, she is incredibly understanding about the difficulties that obese people deal with on a daily basis. She was straight forward, explained all of the risks, explained everything and answers her emails within 12 hours!!!
The people in her office are patient, intelligent, kind and dilligent. They return every call and email, and work hard to take care of any question/issue/concern.
Of course, the statement below is necessary, but alarming. But, as a law student, I respect the necessity for disclaimers, so here's mine:
It is common sense that everyone reacts differently to certain situations, and that people walk away with different impressions. Considering the gravity of this procedure, I don't think ANYONE should just take the word of all of us on the site. Check the surgeon out. Are they affiliated with a university? Have they published papers? Have they had to go up in front of the medical board for disciplinary issues? Speak to his/her patients. Goto the info sessions. DO YOUR RESEARCH!!!!!!
This site is a great way to find out about the procedure, insurance and surgeons. BUT, we are only sharing our experiences, and I have found them astoundingly valuable, but, I'm not a Dr., I'm not a lawyer (yet) and my comments are only meant to reflect my experience. It's common sense, but I don't want to be liable, and I certainly don't want this site to be sued, because it provides so many people with help that to lose it would be a real loss.
