EXCELLENT DOCTOR, NOT THE MUSHY TYPE BUT VERY PROFESSIONAL, PROBABLY THE BEST IN THE COUNTRY. VERY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

I initially met with Dr. Bessler in July 1999, he was very kind and patient with all of my questions. Very low key, no hard sell to do the procedure. I did not decide to do the surgery until 10/99, everything went very smoothly. The hospital was very busy, and I did not get a bed right away, the nurses were more upset than I was, I was in too much pain to care where I was. No PCA pump was available for me either.

I liked him a lot initially. He gave me all the time I wanted--which was more than I needed. He wanted to make sure that I understood everything. He was respectful and humane. He was also honest, and said that even if I request lap. surgery and he begins that way, he will not compromise the surgery, and therefore there is a chance that that he'll convert to an open RNY while I'm "under". He also refused to allow me to schedule the surgery until I waited several days. No "hard sell".

10/11 He had a support group meeting which I attended. I found it very helpful, and still like him. Of course, I haven't had the surgery yet...

Dr. Bessler is straight forward upfront and honest. At my initial interview he gave me all the time I needed to ask all my questions and he clarified everything for me. He made sure I knew all the possible risks and works with an entire staff including nutrition. He specializes in Bariatric Surgery and does both open and lap procedures of Roux-en-Y. He is head of the obesity
center at Columbia-Presbyterian NYC and of lap surgery. Everything he told me came to pass including being in the hospital for only 3 days and I had an open RNY. He has vast expierence with this type of surgery having preformed hundreds of them and on people as heavy as 700lbs. The entire surgerical and hospital experience was professional and showed, by a group of men and women who really cared and understood the special needs of the obese patient.
