Middlesex Health Center for Medical and Surgical Weight Loss Bariatric Center
Aranow, Jonathan (Middletown, CT)rnrnWhat was your first impression of him/her?rnHe knows his stuff. I also felt totally comfortable. If he said I had to hop up on the table the day I met him... I felt confident to do so.rnrnHow did your impression change over time? rnNot one bit!rnrnHow would you describe his/her office staff?rnThey are awesome. Lois is an angel!rn rnWhat did you like least about him/her? rnHonestly... I can't think of any dislikes other then the weight I was when I first stepped on their scale... but that was my fault.rnrnWhat should future patients know about him/her? rnDr. Aranow is very caring. He won't do surgery on just anyone and he knows what he is talking about.rnrnHow much does he/she emphasize aftercare? rnDr. Aranow is very strict about aftercare. It is a must. He also strongly encourages us to go to support group meetings, see our Nut. and Psychologist. rnrnDoes he/she have a structured aftercare program? rnAbsolutly and he lets you know about it at the first meeting you have with him. rnrnHow did he/she address the risks of surgery? rnHe was up front and told the facts. Held nothing back. Right up to the day they were putting the iv in my arm to get me ready he let me know that there was a risk of death and everyother risk that we have with WLS.rnrnHow would you rate him/her overall? rnDr. Aranow is one of the best out there. He was rated top Doc in New England by his peers. That says a lot.rnrnWhich is better, surgical competence, bedside manner, or are both great?rnBoth are awesome! He knows his stuff and he is very caring. You don't feel like a number with Dr. Aranow.
My Surgeon is Dr. Aranow...rnHe is an amazing surgeon.....rnMy first impression of him was that he really knew his stuff, and that I could trust him. I still feel that way. His aftercare program is top-notch, and includes post-op support group meetings, meetings with the nutritionist, and additional counseling or therapy group with his staff psychologist, Doctor Kim Daniels, if necessary.rnThe only issue I have with him is that he is always late for appointments....but I guess that comes with being such a sought-after surgeon.rnI would give Doctor Aranow and his program the highest ratings!
I went only to his presentation. The joke with Dr. Arnarrow is that he looks so young. However, I believe he is in his 40's. Being that I am 30 he looks old enough to me to do the surgery! LOL! Seriously, he seems to have an awesome bedside manner and that is really important for this type of surgery. HE also exudes confidence and he seems very honest. I think he will make a good candidate to perform the surgery on me.
Why did I decide to drive from Rhode Island, an hour's drive one way to have Dr Aranow as my surgeon? Read on to find out...rn<sp>rnMay 2005rnMy first impression of Dr. Aranow was a good one. He attended the seminar in scrubs and was very casual. I like that. He seemed young, but said, \"Yes, I'm old enough to be a surgeon! I'm older than you think.\"rn<sp>rnI knew that this man was the surgeon for me at that first seminar. His successful surgery rate, incidence rate and entire bariatric program (which he is the director of) is just top of the line.rn<sp>rnHe covered literally EVERYTHING about bariatric surgery, it's pros and cons, potential complications, positive outcomes, etc during the seminar. He has devoted 95% of his career in surgery doing just bariatric surgery.rn<sp>rnWhen I had my first meeting with him in his office, I was very pleased with both his bedside manner/personality, knowledge and overall time spent with me for that first visit. It was a Friday, and he was running late due to surgery, plus he was about to leave on vacation. He didn't rush our visit, and was very accommodating and answered all of my questions (though I didn't have many because he covers so much material in that informational seminar).rn<sp>rnFuture patients should know that Dr Aranow takes his role as bariatric surgeon very seriously and agrees to take you on as a patient for life once you commit to the bariatric program. But, he expects the same from his patients in return and demands strict dicipline in following the instructions that are laid out for you as a patient, for the rest of your life.rn<sp>rnHe is a busy surgeon with lots of patients, so, if you get frustrated with having to wait for your appointment once in a while because he may be tied up with a surgery, than don't bother with Dr Aranow. BUT, being a perfectionist in his surgeries is why he's so busy and successful. rnHe makes sure your surgery is \"perfect\" before he'll close you up. I would hope that he'd not rush my surgery just to get to office visits! It all works out in the end. Give yourself enough time to add in some waiting and to have your appointment and you'll be fine. This would be my only complaint about him, truthfully. rn<sp>rnDr Aranow and his staff highly emphasize the aftercare program. They make it known that they are a phone call, or email away with any questions and problems and are always very helpful.rn<sp>rnThe Middlesex Hospital staff are all very well informed and learned in RNY surgery and take good care of you while you're there.rn<sp>rn2006rn<sp>rnSince I wrote this review of Dr Aranow, I've lost 120 pounds and my husband has even had RNY surgery! I am still as pleased with Dr Aranow now as I was last year. I had a stomach complication (not WLS related) recently and Dr Aranow took good care of me. Though it's a bit of a pain to drive an hour one way to get to his office or Middlesex Hospital, it's the price I'm willing to pay to get the best care possible for someone like me who has altered insides!rn<sp> rnDr Aranow is always attending conferences and is learning new and improved ways to do RNY and LapBand surgery and how to care for all of us afterwards. I'm proud to say that \"he's\" my doctor!rnpjh
When Dr. Aranow walked into the conference room I thought, \"Oh my goodness, he looks about 12 yrs old\". By the time he was done with his lecture, I was head-over-heels in love with him, and he was wise beyond his years (and I'm a great judge of surgeons as I have had 14 surgeries and at least 5 surgeons). rnrnThere is nothing that I do not like about him or his staff.rnrnYou can be assured that Dr. Aranow has tremendous experience in preforming Gastric Bypass and Lap Band surgeries and I am very impressed with what his patients say about him at the support group meetings. He and his staff have a great aftercare program, in my opinion. His aftercare program for lap band is very good compared with some of the other doctors that I've read about in the forums.rnrnAt his informational lecture, he went over very carefully all the potential risks of the surgeries as well as comparing the gastric bypass with the lap band surgery- risks and benefits of each. rnrnWhen I had my first visit with him, he took all the time needed to answer all of my questions and concerns. I have an extensive medical and surgical history. He said I would be a \"challange\" and he said he loves challanges!rnrnI have heard that some of his patients say he is arrogant and his bedside manner is a tad less than desirable. BULLCRAP! You should see my famous bowel surgeon in Manhatten! What an arrogant son of a gun! (he was always nice to me, though; but I've seen and heard him talking to my hospital roommates and he has no bedside manner. You better be good if you are going to be that arrogant). rnrnNo, when it comes to Dr. Aranow, he's just peachy. Don't get me wrong, if he thinks you are not following the rules, he will tell you to fly right. That's what we need, right? I believe he will pull no punches with you and will tell it like it is- no surprises. That is my opinion.rnrnHonestly, I have to rate him a 20... on a scale of 1 to 10. rnrnHe saved my life by refusing to do the GB on me. He explained why it would be very dangerous- because of my past surgeries. It is because he explained in great detail- that I agreed with him and did not have surgery by either of the 2 other surgeons that said they would do the GB on me. If I listened to them, I would have doomed myself to a horrid life of constant dehydration and probably IV's, too. rnrnI love my lap band, my surgeon and LIFE!!!rnrnThanks to Dr. Aranow and his staff.rnrnrnrnrn
My first impression of Dr. Aranow at his seminar was that he was very nice but a little bit cocky but new exactly what he was doing. I would rather have the best surgeon who has a cocky attitude than a so so surgeon with a better demeanor. At my first office visit with him he was very pleasant and answered all of my questions without hesitation. He explained all the risks and benefits of the procedure and what would need to be done after the surgery. I knew from the seminar and the my first meeting with him that he was the surgeon for me. His staff is the best you could ask for. They are very friendly and helpful. They have a fantastic program which makes you go through support groups, seeing a psychiatrist, seeing their dietician and going to a preop seminar. This was all extremely helpful. I almost had this procedure done about 15 years ago at Hartford Hospital. I saw the doctor once, was called with a surgery date and admitted to the hospital the night before the procedure. As they were putting in a subclavian tube the night before my surgery they punctured my lung. I got extremely scared and decided not to go through with the surgery. Knowing what I do now, I am so glad that I didn't go through with it. I believe I would have gained it all back. I know some people that had it done around then and gained their weight back. I hadn't thought about having it done for a long time but as I am reaching 50 and on a lot of medication I began to think about it again. I had heard about the lap banding and that interested me but when I went to Dr. Aranow's seminar I realized that I needed the full gastric bypass. I had too much weight to lose for the other. At the seminar we were told about all the support groups we would have to go to as well as seeing a psychiatrist and dietician I thought that made a lot of sense. You really need to be ready to go through this huge ordeal. So overall I guess I would rate him a 10 as a surgeon. The only thing is that I think he could have spent a little more time with me while I was in the hospital. He was always in a rush and barely had time to answer questions although they did get answered. I know doctors are extremely busy but it helps to just take an extra few minutes for your patient. If I were to do this again I would definitely use this same doctor and go through this same program. I would recommend it to anyone living in CT.
My first impression of Dr. Aranow was that he was VERY knowledgable and confident. Some people had said he was arragant, but I never saw that. I only thought he was confident. And, over time, my first impression was replaced by total trust in his abilities to keep me safe and healthy. He is the most thorough, competent doctor I've come across. I trust him explicitly and I owe my life and health to him. I can't say enough good about Dr. Aranow, because he is caring, encouraging, efficient, and, in my eyes, an Angel! He is not only the most competent doctor and surgeon I've known, he is the most personable as well. He's A+ all the way. Thank you from the bottom of my heart!
All the staff in his off is the same way. They are easy to work with and they do care. And they encourage routine follow-ups, not only with Dr. Aranow but with the dietician and support groups, which are vitial to your success. It was through the seminar Dr. Aranow gives, and the support groups, that I've found all the information I needed before surgery and to continue on after surgery.
There is so much to say about Dr. Aranow, he's amazing! He changed my life so much, he's kind and compassionate. He surrounds himself with the most wonderful staff. The hospital stay to office visits are awsome. My surgury went well, my hospital stay was short and recovery was amazing. Do everything he says and your back on your feet in short of a couple of days! I was back to work in two weeks. My start weight was 366lbs I'm at 253lbs today and feeling wonderful. I had no problems with diet after surgury, no problems with food now. It's still coming off and I can excersie without feeling as though I won't make it.
I never had the problems that my sister or some of my friends who had other surgeons have had. No problems with food or exercise. I am a new person and loving life!
Dr. Aranow saved my life! Hats off to a wonderful doctor and staff! Go Middlesex Memorial Hospital and Shoreline Surgical.
I was very impressed with Dr. Aranow.
