Joao Marchesini, M.D. Bariatrics Bariatric Center
I wouldn't allow any other surgeon in the world, to do my Duodenal Switch other than Dr. Marchesini. I have never known a more compasionate man and a more caring man in my life....much less, surgeon! Once he does your surgery, he considers you his patient for life! I am 8 weeks post op and any time I have had a question, I email him or call him and he's back with me within minutes! It's absolutely amazing! Dr.s in this country are FAR from caring and patient-friendly as Dr. M is! It's absolutley unbelievable and indescribable how much love and genuine care you feel from him. He's on the board of everything, a professor of bariatric surgery at one of the teaching colleges in Brazil, he's been named the top Bariatric somethingorother in Brazil with Bariatric surgeons...I don't know all the details and names, but his website will tell you all the details. Bedside manner AND surgical competence can't be beat by any other Dr. in the world! And I'd bet money on that!
Dr. Marchesini is a truly caring person. His patients are like his family. From the first email to my meeting with him, I felt like he was my friend and that he cared about everything that happened to me. Durval works with Dr. Marchesini. Durval is also like family. He takes care of you and helps you while you are in Brazil with anything you need. Meeting them both made me feel like I was coming home to visit my family. Dr. Marchesini truly goes out of his way to make you feel comfortable. I was truly impressed that he left his home on a Sunday afternoon to ride with me in the shuttle to my motel just to be able to meet me and make me feel welcome. From what I've seen and read about so far, he is rated at the top of my list. I feel very comfortable knowing he is my surgeon and afterwards will remain my friend.
My first and continuing impression of Dr. Marchesini is that he is a careful surgeon and kind gentleman who is supportive and charming in the Brazilian way.
His office staff, hospital nurses etc. speak very little English, but manage to make you feel kindly cared for, nonetheless.
The "English-speaking nurse" assigned to take care of us from airport pick-up to airport departure was a bit overly busy when I was there and I felt I didn't like him and couldn't communicate well with him.
Future patients should know that Dr. Marchesini has a clean and excellent hospital and hotel package that will seem like a bit of a vacation instead of life-threatening surgery.
He wants me to send him any problems and questions and he replies by email to me in 24 hours. He also wants my follow-up physician in Japan to send him my bloodwork every three months so that he can advise me if I am in need of supplements.
He has surgical helpers in cases of special needs such as super obesity and heart conditions. He is excellent and I just adore him.
Dr Marchesini is everything everyone says he is and then some.
His bedside manner is perfect. Dr Marchesini should teach classes to American doctors on how to relate to patients.
He is skilled, kind, reassuring and available.
Dr Marchesini's complication rate is very low and the Brazilian hospital he uses is incredibly clean with an infection rate SO MUCH lower than American hospitals.
The drawback is obvious. Brazil is very far away from the US. Aftercare is difficult and you have to work hard to get what you need from US doctors who might not be thrilled that you went to Brazil for surgery.
I wish he performed Lap surgery instead of Open.
I would recommend him and the operation to anyone who is morbidly obese.
My first inpression of Dr.M through an email is that he was very kind and caring. He always answers emails in a timely manner and treats u as if u r the only patient he has.. Being that he is in another country he has alot of american patients and goes out oh his way to make u feel safe and comfortable. He picks u up from airport when u arrive and takes u to hotel or hospital depending on when date of surgery is. He surrounds u with a english speaking nurse that will be around u 24/7... I cant wait to meet him in person, i have only heard good things from post op patients about this wonderful human being with the name Dr. M.
Dr. M was intelligent charming and caring. He tended to minimize the surgery risks and was a little paternalistic which I think is a cultural thing. He sent me home w/ the info I need for my primary care MD and stressed the need for post op labwork,I would rate him a 10 and I believe both his skill and his manner is great.
He was very reassuring and answered all my questions thoroughly.
I had breathing problems when I arrived which he addressed immediately by putting me in the hospital early.
His staff was very efficient and helpful.
I can't think of anything I didn't like about him. He knew English very well and was very helpful providing information about the area. He was always available which meant a lot to me. He left his cell number with us (and other patients)and only turns it off when he is in surgery. He has always been helpful with questions both before and after surgery, and always ready to talk to your primary care physician if there is any problem. He tells everyone the risks as well as the part we will have to play in making the surgery work for us. I was very pleased with both the surgical competence and bedside manner of Dr. Marchesini and would recommend him to anyone in a heartbeat. `
Dr. Marchesini first impressed me as a very open, caring doctor who was interested in giving me complete information to help me make a decision about my surgery. The risks of surgery were explained, and he provided data on the number of DS surgeries he had performed, the number and kinds of complications that his patients had experienced. The only change in my initial impression of Dr. Marchesini was that I came to see him as even more caring and compassionate than I could have hoped for. He went out of his way to be available. His office staff did not speak English, but were very patient with American patients who did not speak Portugese!
There was nothing I didn't like about Dr. Marchesini. He's my hero!
Because he is in Brazil, Dr. Marchesini has us email bloodwork results every three months and is available by cell phone and email to answer questions. He works with my PCP to ensure follow-up. The follow-up is probably the weakest link in a surgery experience with Dr. Marchesini. Due to the distance, I am more likely to go to my online support group for advice than to email or make a call to Brazil.
Which is better, surgical competence or bedside manner??? I would have to say that both are great. As far as surgical competence goes, not only did my surgery go very well with no complications, but a former operating room nurse who accompanied her granddaughter to Brazil for surgery (at the same time I was there) observed the surgery, and said the surgical team worked together flawlessly---better than any other she had seen. She said everyone did their part without hesitation and that Dr. Marchesini never had to ask for an instrument... the right was was always handed to him at the right time, without his asking. As far as bedside manner goes, well, I think I've already made it clear how dear he is.
