I am "58" and had my DS almost 5 years ago by Dr. Joao Marchesini in Brazil. I mean to tell you, IN MY BOOK, he is the BEST OF THE BEST. At the time, ALL of my expenses (from exams in the U.S. to my trip to and from Brazil, hotel, hospital, surgery, private nurse (Durvall)...EVERYTHING) came to around $12,000. Now I think the cost is around $15,000.

He and the Hospital Staff beats anything I have ever seen here in the U.S. (nothing against OUR HOSPITALS here, but, they were SUPERB...clean, VIP treatment, Dr. Marchesini was very 'personable', great bedside manner, he even sent me a CARE PACKAGE to my hotel room plus called me every day to make sure I was ok (recuperation in hotel was 8 days). PLUS the private nurse came to check on me daily and would do my translating for me. YOU CAN NOT BEAT THAT SERVICE here in the U.S.

Wonderful impression from the start. My opinion was confirmed after meeting Dr. M in person and throughout my post op care. Dr. M has a wonderful team that provides excellent patient care. He very much emphasizes aftercare with my current primary physician. Since he is a continent away, he asked that all my test results be sent to him for review. He was very realistic abut surgery, especially since my surgery was a revision from the lap band to the DS. On a scale from 1 to 10, with 10 being the best, I would rate Dr. M a 10. Both bedside manner and surgical competence are very important. Fortunately, Dr. M rates superior in both categories.

Aug 18th 2005: 1st impression is he is a very busy, yet caring man. Extremely polite and humble both via email and on the phone. Took time he did not really have to spare, to answer my questions fully and make me at ease on the phone. Am looking forward to meeting him in person.-------------rnrnDec 8th. Just returned home. My family and I agree that we have never before met anyone like Dr. Marchesini. There are no words elegant, sensitive, caring or descriptive enough to describe this angel walking among man. His genuine care and concern for EVERY aspect of his patient (and family) litterally oozes out of him, 24/7. There is no topic he won't help you with and he is available to you constantly other than when he is actually in surgery 24/7. His \"Hello my friend\" greeting warms a hurting patient like split pea soup on a frozen foggy night. His reassurances that what ever your complaint is are valid and expected and will be taken care of NOW, calms even the most crazed or pain whomped patient. He never made a promise to us he did not deliver on. I love the man and miss him already. I dread having to go to ANY United States hospital rnwithout him there to hold my hand.rnrn*UPDATE 2008. In June 2007 the scar tissue (adhesions) from my original surgery grew like spider webs out from my abdominal wall and strangled my small intestine causeing me to need an emergency bowel resection. 5' of small bowel was removed by the on call surgeon at UCH Carrolwood. That loss of bowel restarted my weight loss and within 5 months I was malnurished and required another surgery for \"short bowel syndrome\". This revision to my DS would lengthen my common channel. Since insurance was covering the procedure (as it was not \"WLSS\" related, but \"Surgically related\" after consulting with Dr. Marchesini, I selected Dr. Michel Murr at TGH for the procedure. The actual surgery on Feb 5th 2008 went fine and was successful correcting my malnutrition. However a staple leaked inside me that evening causing sepsis and several other life threatening complication causing me to spend 6 weeks in the hospital, and a month on a ventilator. Dr. Murr took imediate and continuous responsibility. He and his team met with me and my family several times a day and were with us step by step through my continuing recovery. It is now December 2008 and I am still on disability from the complications. I've dealt with Dr. Murr and his staff several dozen times this past year and they have always gone out of their way to accomodate me and make sure I was healthy. I would have no reservations about having Dr. Murr operate on me again if need be, and in fact, he will be doing the RNY on my baby sister in 2009.

Dr. Marchesini's specialty is the DS, and the main doctor for my Verticle Sleeve Gastrectomy. He is a great doctor; he does not physically perform the laparoscopic surgery, but he leads the team that does. rnrnOne of the other doctors on the team was fantastic. His name is Dr. Giorgio Baretta, and his professionalism, his bedside manner, kindness, and true concern for his patients, whether you're in Brazil or have gone home, is comparable only to that of Dr. Marchesini himself.rnrnDr. Marchesini JUNIOR. was the other laparoscopic surgeon. I'm sure he's very competent surgically, but his bedside manner is cool and aloof. rnrnThe surgery went perfectly (1 hour!) and the only problem encountered afterwards (besides terrible flat pillows at the hospital) was the fact that the only good vein on my arms closed up after a few days. Dr. Baretta came to check on me almost every day, as did Dr. Marchesini, Sr., whose compassion and warmth are legendary!

Everything was a complete and positive experiance. Not only was the Dr wonderful and professional but so was his staff. You could tell this was not his first rodeo. I was self pay and even if my insurance would have paid I can honestly say I would choose to go back and have him do it. He not only has a great bedside manner but his surgical competence is the best. You feel he truly cares for you as his patient and makes sure the nurses do too.

A brilliant Surgeon and compassionate man. rnNothing but positive things to say about the experience.

Dr. Marchesini is an excellent surgeon and a warm, sincerely caring human being as well. I think so highly of him that I recommended him to two of my sisters and accompanied them to Brazil when they had their surgeries several years after I did. When we are having these types of surgery, we are indeed placing our lives in the hands of our surgeon (and, of course, God). Suffice it to say that I would gladly place my life in the hands of Dr. Marchesini any time and without hesitation. I honestly have NOTHING negative to say about him or his staff or the treatement I received. The hotel where we all had stayed was next to the hospital and I wasn't particularly comfortable there, as the air conditioning didn't work that well, but that was the only negative thing I experienced.

Anyone that researches Dr M, knows that he is a superb surgeon. He's done over 1800 surgeries and has not lost a patient. Those were odds I was looking for when I decided to go abroad for surgery. Since then, I have assisted 30 other Canadian patients to go to have him save their lives too. rnrnHis first impression was caring, thoughtful and I knew I could count on him long term. This remains true to this day. I email him, and ask him whatever I need. rnrnHe addressed everything with me, but even at 443 pounds at the time, he felt I was average risk patient. Thats the confidence you get with a surgeon who's really just that good. rnrnI rate him a 20 out of 10. I would not hesitate to have anyone go there. I sent one of my friends, who was 650 pounds, and he's doing great. rnrn
