What a blessing this surgery is:) Praise GOD for Dr. Marchesini and this wonderful DS surgery!
01/14/06: I am 18 weeks out today and I know without a doubt that Dr. Marchesini is simply the BEST in my humble opinion!!! I have lost a total as of this morning 76 pounds:) LIFE IS GREAT AND I LOVE MY DS!!
Compassionate and Caring..Skilled and Knowledgeable are some of the best ways to describe Dr. Marchesini. God Blessed Him:)
5/20/05: I haven't met him yet and am waiting to hear from him with the initial contact papers. I have heard nothing but wonderful news about him and his staff.
5/27/05: I got my email from Dr. Marchesini last night saying that he would be honored to be my Surgeon. Praise God!
Dr. Marchesini is everything people say he is--compassionate, caring, always accessible, with infinite patience and expertise. All during my stay in Brazil and since, he has been there when I needed him. I had a complication-free surgery (90 minutes, "by the book" as Dr. M described it) and recovery, but I recently had a question for him which he, although swamped with patients and obligations, answered promptly. He remains interested and invested in my progress and reminded me to be sure and send in some photos so he could see how I was doing.
When people hold someone in such high esteem, I tend to be skeptical and less impressed when I meet them in person. But Dr. M just knocked my off my feet! He is one of the very few people I have met who is truly larger than life, in the most wonderful way. It's clear he loves what he does--it shows in every aspect of his care and demeanor.
I'm among the many, many patients who consider themselves blessed to have found the incomparable Dr. M.
My first contact Dr. Marchesini was through e-mail. He made a wonderful first impression! His kindness and caring were just so obvious from the start.
When I met him in person, it was more than I had even planned for! Everyone said how great he was, and I didn't want to be let down, so I made sure I wasn't expecting him to be that great. Well, he was. First I saw of him was shortly after we (Mom and I) had arrived at the hotel (Durval picked us up at the airport and got us settled). We decided to go look around, got off the elevator in the lobby and there was the good doctor, waiting to go up to see me and welcome us! He gave us each a hug, expressed how glad he was to meet us, how glad he was that I was there and how he looked forward to taking the best care of me! That evening, he attended a "get-together" with the other Americans on the top floor of the hotel. His other assistant, Leandro, played the keyboard and sang, and Dr. M, his wife and Durval were all there to visit with all of us.
Regarding the surgery (12-7-05), Dr. M was again wonderful. My surgery took 55 minutes; everything went very smoothly. His aftercare was also awesome. He spent much time with me and really cared about how I was feeling and doing (a lot different from what I was used to from other surgical experiences here). When I had a question regarding my incision a few days after going back to the hotel, he had me come right over so he could check it (all was well). I ended up healing very well.
As to describing his staff, Leandro was great. He was very nice, picked us up and took us to my appointments. I didn't have as much contact with Durval since I had Mom there to help me, but he was very gracious in mailing postcards for us, getting my prescriptions after I was released from the hospital, etc.
The nurses and physical therapists all spoke some English (some a lot more than others). Those who didn't speak much were very willing to have me use the phrase book and engage in "sign language". Everything was figured out without problem! They were very nice and catered to me.
The hospital room was awesome. It had a huge balcony, grand bathroom, a futon for mom to sleep on, nice big comfy chair for me to sit in when I got tired of the bed, etc.
My only problem was with the water post-op. My sense of smell was heightened and the smell of the water gagged me. I literally had dry heaves every time I went into the bathroom, just from the smell of the water! Mom couldn't smell it, and I didn't have any problems with it before surgery. But I've since learned there were a few others that had this heightened smell after surgery and the smell of the water bothered them, too! I've had a bit of it back home, the chlorine, so I think it was what they put in theirs that's similar to the chlorine that we put in ours.
However, I could deal with that easily for the trade-off of how wonderful everything else was. Dr. Marchesini is an extremely talented, caring surgeon whom I would recommend to anyone!
Can't wait to meet him face to face on 11-25-2005!
I had heard so many wonderful things about Dr. M, so I was prepared to meet a good doctor. What blew me away was his kindness. He was never in a hurry, he took time to chat about unrelated things, and did everything possible to make our stay here comfortable. I called once at 8pm just to ask for something for incision pain, and he came right over to the hotel to examine my incision. He was on the way to have dinner with his grandson, and took the time out to come and see me. He is a great surgeon and a great man, and hopefully a lifelong friend. Diana
Dr Marchesini is the best there is. They simply do not come any better. He is the most skilled bariactric surgeon there is, as well as being a "one in a million" loving and caring man. If I had to have my DS again tomorrow, I would fly to Brazil all over again, just to have him as my surgeon. He is an excellent, EXCELLENT man....
