Highland Hospital Bariatrics Bariatric Center
My first impression of Dr. O'Malley was a very good one that has not changed and I am now 2 days away from being 9 weeks post-op and I have already lost 45 pounds. Everyone at Highland Hospital was very knowledgable about my surgery (laparoscopic RNY) and concerned about my pain control as well as keepin me free from infection. Before I had the surgery, Dr. O'Malley was very thorough in explaining the procedure to me from beginning to end. He even went as far as drawing a diagram of how my digestive system was at the time and how it would be post-op. I received extensive patient teaching during my hospital stay. Dr. O'Malley's office staff is also very knowledgable about the surgery and what steps should be taken before the surgery and what precautions to take after the surgery. I was provided with a different menu at each post-op visit and was able to ask any questions that I could possibly think of. I also called the office with questions between office visits. I had no complications during or after my surgery and I am very grateful to Dr. O'Malley for a job well done - before, during, and after. If I had to rate the "DOC" on a scale of 1-10 with 10 being most satisfied, Dr. O'Malley would definitely receive a 10+. I am a healthcare professional and I must admit, I was a bit nervous before my surgery especially having heard the "horror stories" regarding the surgery but I am so glad that I did not let that discourage me and neither should you!!!
I have read some of the previous evaluations of Dr. O Malley referring to his perhaps "Business Like Demeanor" and I personally thought it was an asset in my decision making. I did not want to be cuddled and fussed over---- I came to him want the good, bad and ugly details---nothing more and nothing less. I was after an experienced surgeon and he did not have to win a popularity contest for me. I felt he was very matter of fact providing me with ALL the details and then left it up to me to decide if I could handle the required changes I would have to make. I have found him to be very competent, and has taken all the time I needed in my first and subsequent visits. I am a nurse and I was 100% satified with my surgeon and my care and have already referred several people to him.
For me, Dr. OMalley was just right for my needs.
I had gotten the impression from other
members of this site that Dr. OMalley was not that
friendly, but i got the complete opposite
impression when i met him in person. Both he
and his secretary were VERY VERY helpful.
When i first arrived at his office, there was
some confusion about which waiting room to go
to, etc., but the Dr. was running right on
time. Our initial meeting was very
informative, and he made sure that i knew
that this surgery was only a tool in a weight
loss plan. There is a very strict follow-up
appointment plan after surgery which helped a
great deal to ease my mind about going under
the knife. Out of all the other surgeons i
researched, i would not feel comfortable
going to any other Doctor but William OMalley..

Since last time I have met with Dr. O'Malley... He is not the most people friendly person.. but he is very to the point and knowledgeable...ALSO..THEY HAVE CHAIRS WITH ARMS IN THE OFFICE...DUH.. You're dealing with fat people.. get some chairs with NO ARMS... Oh well.. a goal to attain anyway.. maybe it is a tactic of theirs to make us REALLY want surgery (so we will fit in the chairs)...But anyway.. he is nice enough.. his receptionist is the people person in his crew... so don't be deterred because of his demeanor...Not that he is mean or anything... (He is just not as excited about things as you are)
I haven't met with Dr. O'Malley yet.. I have an appointment on May 30th. I found out that he does the procedure laproscopically... This doctor is an hour and a half away... but it is worth it for the shorter recovery.. and less invasive surgery...I can hardly wait to go meet with him.. Hopefully I can get a surgery date then...
I was going to go with Dr. Oh in Auburn.. but I think that I will stick with Dr. O'Malley for now... Since he does the procedure laproscopically... This seems like a better option for me... But if all else fails, I will probably go with Dr. Oh.. since he is a lot closer to me..
Very skilled surgeon. Managed to do a lap roux-en-y even though I had a six-inch scar from previous gall bladder surgery.
Office staff (Diane) is very helpful and knowledgeable.
You won't get the warm and fuzzies with Dr. O'Malley, but you do get skill.
After care is excellent. He saw me 10 days after surgery, and then once a month for the next three months, each time giving me a different items to add to my eating plan.
The next time I see him it will be six months post-op.
On first visit draws a very detailed picture of what the surgery entails and gives you adequate warning as to the fact that this surgery is not a "cure all" but a tool to be used in weight loss.
Surgical competence is outstanding, but bedside manner is probably neutral.
Dr.O'Malley, upon first impression, was a young surgeon who presented himself in a professional manner.
The majority of our first meeting consisted of his description of the surgery and the possible and/or probable outcomes and risks.
He supplied drawings of the surgical intervention. There was free exchange of questions and answers. I did not feel rushed and he made me feel at ease.
There is an extensive aftercare program at Highland Hospital in Rochester, NY.
I believe Dr. O'Malley is dedicated and committed to helping his patients attain a better quality of life.
He was like, "You want do do what? What do you want to do that for?" Was he joking I don't know...But very smart and explained everything. Office staff was wonderful!
4/18/01 I have really gotten to like Dr.O. He just a Dr & i think he is a very buisy one too!! I'm a nurse & most Dr's behave in such a manner. I have to say though, I've herd so many good things about his skill as a surgon that I'd take a little personality differences. He was very impressed with my wgt loss & I owe it to him!! THANKS DR.O!!!
My first impression of Dr.O'Malley was that he looked angry when he first came into the room. That kinda put me off a bit. Then he asked me what he could do for me! Like he did not know why I was there! LOL... Then he really started talking about how this bypass was not magic and that I had to take carge of my own life and weight. He seemed like he was trying to put me off. I am a smoker and at the present not on a diet. He told me that if I was not even willing to be on a diet, than having an operation would not help me. And he would NEVER operate on a smoker!!!!!!!!!
As we spoke he seemed to calm down and his voice even seemed calm. He exlained the surgery to me and some of the risks. He wants me to stop smoking and go on a 1600 calorie a day diet for 3 months( I can never be a smoker again and thats ok with me! I am tired of smoking anyway) and that my whole diet would have to change. By the time I left, I felt pretty confident that I can do this and that in time DR.O"Malley and I can come to an understanding. I feel he was gruff in the first place just to see if I could take it! When he saw that I could and I was serious, it went just fine.
His office staff that I met today was Diane and she was pleasant for the few minutes that I saw her.
Dr. O'Malley's office staff is first rate. Very nice, easy to talk to, explain everything in detail, and make you feel quite at east.
My first impression of Dr. O'Malley is that he is quite direct about this surgery being a life long decision, that nothing will be the same, that follow up, diet and exercise are the only thing that lose weight, and they may be many complications. He repeats several times that many people don't lose any weight, or only lose 50% and even with that, gain it back. He points out aspects of your life that will probably make the surgery difficult. Although I walked out feeling a little depressed, I was happy to know the down sides/negatives of the surgery. I was not deterred about having WLS. My overall impression of Dr. O'Malley is very positive.
His receptionist is incrediably helpful! His nurse practioner had the surgery many years ago, and gives you great advice.
Before, during and after the surgery Dr. O'Malley was good. He is very professional, and straight to the point. No chit chat, just the facts.
Post op visits to Dr. O'Malley at his office went well. I found him more talkative and willing to discuss the surgery itself, how it was preformed, etc.
