Center for Comprehensive Weight Loss Bariatric Center
I recently attended Dr. Shina seminar. I found him to be very strait forward. He tells it like it is. If you don't want to play by his rules than don't play at all. I like that approach. I think that's the mentality I need. His staff was awsome, very kind hearted and understanding. Dr. Shina really emphasized following his guidance during and after surgery which let's me know he will not set me up for failure. He laid out all the risks and benefits and allowed for a lengthy question and answer time. I asked several questions and I appreciated the fact that he didn't seem to get annoyed at all my questions and concerns. When my husband and I sat with him one on one. He wanted to know if I had any more questions. Out of all the patiets there that day he thought I may still have come concerns. I like the fact that he is very observant.
During my consultation, I was nervous, but excited and not a little scared. But, Donna and Dr. Shina quickly eased me of those fears. Dr Shina is sharp, witty, straight to the point and very no-nonsense. He made me feel comfortable and confident in his skills and education.
When you Go for your initial consult with Dr Shina, Make sure you have the following :
A list of your medications that you've been taking, (including the dosage), your insurance card and booklet, and a list of questions you need answers to. I went ahead and got a copy of my medical records, but they apparently didnt need them.
The only thing i'm concerned about is "after care". I live in Henderson and Louisville is a good distance away. So i'm worried if something happens here, i might not be able to get in to see him quickly enough.
to the question posted off to the side of this nifty little box - "Which is better, surgical competence, beside manner, or both great?"
Well, I'd say both, but since we're not all that lucky, Surgical competance rules. I'd rather deal with a rather obnoxious doctor than a doctor that was messing with my insides without knowing what he was doing :)
Dr. Shina is a very direct and "to-the-point" kind of guy who doesn't sugar-coat the issues. I really appreciated his approach and I felt as though he was sincere when speaking with everyone. The information packet provided prior to the consult was very thorough and discussed basically everything you wanted/needed to know about WLS. The Right Weigh office staff is absolutely awesome, especially Donna and Glenna!
I went for my first consultation on June 4, 2002 and met Dr. Shina. I liked him right off the bat. I had heard several different opinions of him. So I was anxious to met him. My first meeting with him was good. I liked him right off the bat. He doesn't beat around the bush about the possible complications or how you are going to feel after surgery. He as very straight forward and to the point. Which I like because I am also that way. I don't want a doctor who will pad everything for me and treat me like a child that will cry if you tell me something I don't want to hear. I want the good, bad and the ugly when it comes to this surgery. This is a major decision I am making and I want all the facts. When I get further along into my surgery adventure I will let you how my opinion. It may or maynot have change concerning Dr. Shina.
At first I was a nervous wreck going to see Dr Shina from what I had heard he is the best surgeon in the area but don't expect alot of bedside manner from him. I'm thinking ok I had a sorepuss for a doctor.

Well he was absolutely nothing like that at all yesterday when I met him. He sat down with the group for the consultation and every question that was answered he answered very throughly. His seminars are scheduled for 3 hours and this one lasted almost 5 hours. He never seems rushed during the seminar at all with us. During the private consultation I told him of a diet that I had just remember and that it wasn't written down. He asked about it and I told him it was one of those wonderful infomercial diets. He then told me about a country song he wrote about diet infomercials and was singing part of the song. I was cracking up. Maybe it was just me, but I just loved him. Now don't get me wrong he is very blunt in explaining the procedure and all the possible complications. He doesn't feel any need to sugar coat this procedure and if you feel that your being forced into this or if your hesitant then he asked that you leave he wouldn't perform the surgery on you. Overall I was very impressed with him and am very glad that I've choosen him for my WLS.
I had my consultation with Dr. Shina on May 14, 2002 and I am now waiting for insurance approval. My first impression of Dr. Shina was that he is very straight forward and honest about the surgery and any risks involved. He stresses that aftercare is very important for successful weight loss. I would rate him and his staff a "10".
***NOTE: my surgeon who did my procedure was Dr. Mark Shina but I have moved and now have a new doctor*** (07.26.01) I have not yet got to meet Dr. Shina but I have set up my appointment. It is scheduled for August 28th. So far, everyone has been great and helpful. Will update as time goes on. :)
(08.28.01)Met Dr. Shina today. I love him! Many people said he was dry and arrogant but I did not see that side of him at all. He is very serious and wants you to know that this is a surgery that can't be taken lightly. He was very impressed that I had researched the surgery so well. I feel confident to be in his hands. Wouldn't change for the world~!
(09-21-01) Got approved for surgery today. I never thought it would go so quick. Dr. Shina's office was great, they did all the paperwork.

(11.24.01) Post op. Well I must say I am VERY pleased with Dr. Shina. He was absolutely great. He made sure I was taken care of in the hospital. He was very thorough with me and my family the whole time. Am glad to have had him on my side.
(12.06.01) Still love him. Saw him for my two week post op today. He was very pleased with my progress so far. Says I am doing great. He smiled and cracked jokes. He thinks I will be an excellent case and far surpass my weight goals. I am looking forward to the journey together. G-tube comes out in two weeks.
