Atrium Health Bariatric Center
I was referred to Dr. Kuwada for wls and have met with him and am very impressed with him as well as his staff. I have have several interactions with his staff and they are exceptional. He is patient and kind and spends as much time as needed with you. When I went for my first consultation with him we were there for 2 hours. We met his PA and she is wonderful. His staff is respectful and the enviroment is very patient friendly. Justine does all the work for insurance coverage and she is excellent. They are quick to call back. I know several people that have had surgery with Dr. Kuwada and were more than pleased. The program is complete in that they have a support group that meets monthly, a nutritionist available and from reports to me from other patients are quick to call back after surgery when you have any questions. I will update as time progresses and see if things continue this well.
My first impression of Dr. Kuwada was that he's busy. But as I talked with him I realized he REALLY knew what he was talking about and he's probably busy because he's such a good surgeon. My general practitioner recommended Dr. Kuwada and my general practitioner is very on the ball when it comes to everything.
Dr. Kuwada's office staff is awesome. They generally call back the same day that you call unless you call really late and then they'd call the next morning. The nurse was a little difficult to get in touch with but Justina was ALWAYS there. I'm actually wondering if she ever gets a break.
I can't really think of anything I didn't like about Dr. Kuwada. He was very knowledgeable. The night after the surgery...I'm sure he'd been there all day. But 11:00pm at night he comes in to tell me I need to get up and walk. (The residency doctor told me I could wait until the next morning) But Dr. Kuwada reminded me that blood clots are a possibility so I needed to get moving. I'm sure he was exhausted from doing whatever else that day and my surgery, yet he stopped by to make sure I was doing what was necessary.
Dr. Kuwada really focuses on the surgery. He talked a little with me about aftercare but his staff really does most of that. And trust me..the staff talks about aftercare...sets you up with support group meetings.
He was very thorough in discussing the risks of the surgery. He did not paint a rosy picture with a skinny me in it. He was also very candid about his mortality rate which was only one and he's done more than 230 of these procedures.
Overall I would rate Dr. Kuwada a 10. Keep in mind I've had little experience with medical staff because this is my first surgical experience beyond wisdom tooth removal but...I can't think of anything he could've done to make the experience better
Surgical competence and bedside manner were both well above my expectations.
Dr. Bauman was great! My Mother and Grandmother went with me to my first visit, we all three were very impressed with him and his staff. They made us feel very comfortable and when we left the office we felt like we had known his nurses all our lives. I told him I didn't know which surgery I wanted, I was still up in the air. He told me he wasn't going to push me to do one or the other but he would be there to answer any questions I had about either of them. Overall, so far, I give Dr. Bauman and his office a 10! Their GREAT!
Really like his staff- Cathy the NP,Justina (who handles insurance.) Dr. Kuwada seems very calm and confident. I trust that he will not lead me down the primrose path. Other collegues speak highly of him as well. He is operating on the people he works with at the hospital. I think that speaks volumes. This practice does not operate on individuals with BMI >50. Require: Nutritional and Psych eval, Cardiac clearance, Pulmonary function, and EGD and Colonoscopy. Nice Bedside manner and does cover risks vs benefits of WLS. At this time does not do LAP-Bands. All surgeries are at Carolinas Medical Center . Overall, so far, positive experience.
Dr. Bauman was wonderful. He answered all my questions to the fullest on the first visit. I had a blood clot several years ago and Dr. Bauman was very concerned and took the extra precautions to ensure that this did not happen again. He had wonderful bedside manner and is always concerned about my well being. I am 3 weeks post op now and he is just as concerned as he was the first day. After care is very important. I saw him 1 week post op, 2 weeks post op and will see him again in one week for 4 weeks post op. He requires to see nutritionist monthly. Very structured program. I would recommend his program to anyone looking to have this surgery. I had the rny with a band.
My first impression of Dr. Bauman was/is that he is very reserved, but knowledgeable about his craft. Dr. Bauman made sure that I understood what was involved, including the benefits, risk and the seriousness of the procedure. He incouraged my questions. Dr. Bauman spoke frequently as surgery being a "tool". His staff has been very patient and kind from the very first telephone call. No matter how many times I call and ask questions, they are all so professional.
I have met with Dr. Roc a number of times because my husband had surgery with him on 9/6/05. Dr. Bauman is very thorough and very competant. I like that he is cautious and will not take chances. My husband was to have the "optional" silastic band added as a part of his Lap RNY, but Dr. Roc determined during surgery that it would increase his risk due to the presence of excess skin in his stomach. Dr. B did not do the band. I'd rather my surgeon be safe than sorry. Also his staff is very organized and knowledgeable. Dr. Roc has been identified by BCBS as a bariatric surgeon of excellence due to his extensive experience (over 800 surgeries). This designation makes insurence approval with BCBS a piece of cake.
My first impression of Dr. Bauman was, "Boy, am I embarrassed to be here..." He is very nice looking and so is his staff. That feeling didn't last long though, because I was treated with the utmost kindness and respect.
Dr. Bauman is an excellent surgeon. His care and concern for his patients are evident from day one. He has you walk a pretty straight line from the consultation through the pre-surgery process because he wants to be sure patient's know what they are getting themselves into and that they are good candidates for success. Consequently, this process can take up to a year. I waited about 9 months from my original contact with his office. This was somewhat disappointing because I had wanted to loose a considerable amount of weight before my daughter's wedding. As it turn out, my surgery was scheduled for 4 days after the wedding! Oh well, that reason was purely vanity! The surgery went very well. I did have a minor problem with extreme nausea which prolonged my hospital stay by one day so I could be on liquid nutrition by the time I left the hospital. Other than that, I was up and around the day after surgery. The hospital staff was wonderful! They are completed competent in handling Dr. Bauman's patients, and they make you feel so special. Following surgery, my husband and I had to stay in a motel close by until my one week check up. If you live out of town, this is one of Dr. Bauman's requirements. He wants you to be able to get to the hospital quickly in case you have complications. But it was pleasant; I was well enough to get out and do some light shopping. His after care program is structured and very success oriented. I live a good distance away from Concord, so I did not take advantage of all that was offered in the way of nutritional support, strength training and support groups, but it was available for me. If you in Charlotte, Corcord or surrounding areas in NC, you will be in excellent hands with Dr. Bauman.
