University of Maryland Medical Center Hospital
I met Dr. Kligman at his mandatory seminar on October 16 and then again at my initial consultation on October 18. He was late both times but apologized more than enough. You can tell that he is a very busy person. He seems to be very honest about the surgery saying that the results are not entirely up to him but up to the patient too. He is very knowledgable and doesn't sugar-coat anything.
I think that I will feel very comfortable going through this with him.
He is very thorough, has a very good seminar, and is available for all questions. I have the highest confidence in him. Visiting the support group, you know that he is held in very high regard by all his patients.
His office staff is very friendly and helpful. You will see them attending the support group meetings along with Dr. Kligman and his wife, Alyssa, who is dedicated to the welfare of all the patients, in her own right.
Any and all questions are answered concerning the surgery. Afer care is closely monitored. He considers his patients to be a lifetime responsibility.
He is an excellent choice for the Roux-en-Y surgery. He is one of few who performs the surgery laparoscopically. He is Assistant Professor of Surgery for General Surgery/ Surgical Critical Care at Medical College of Ohio. He presently is the only trauma surgeon on staff.
A first impression, i.e. the "all business type" with not much personality, will be replaced by warmest regard, which somewhat borders on love, once you get to know him.
He's changed the life of hundreds.
I found Dr. Kligman through this site. I made other appts with surgeons closer to me, but got in with Dr Kligman faster. I was so impressed by him! He actually has a personality, and is so knowledgeable, and very cautious. I had to go thru some additional testing before he would do the procedure (thought it was a bribe lol)but went thru it grudgingly. I compained enough to Claudia (who, by the way, is the greatest!!!), and she tried to have him rescind his decision, but she explained how cautious he was because he does not want any "surprises" when he does the surgery.
I was amazed at how complete my exam was with Dr. Kligman. Dont think I was ever checked over that much before. He takes time with you, as do the residents that are helping. I would definitly give Dr. Kligman a 10, he is so thorough and tough. But he does it all with a smile! In my opinion, I can't say anything negative about him! Even tho I didnt have my surgery at the hospital he usually does them at, he was there to check on me at least 3x a day. I have NEVER seen that before.
I really looked forward to my appointment with Dr. Kligman and he was all that I had hoped for. He was personable, factual and nice. I was very confident of his abilities and that I'd be able to ask him anything. I found that when he asks a question of me, he expects a direct answer, short and to the point.
The office staff are excellent. They make themselves available on e-mail for questions and such. I thought he didn't like me at first but I got over that. I think he is the best in this area and I would recommend his care to anyone. He has a strong emphasis on knowledge and aftercare. A person has to take a written test to survey their knowledge. He makes sure you are fully informed.
Before leaving the hospital I had a talk with a dietician. Dr. Kligman gave me written information as well and I had learned much by attending the support group meetings for a few months before my actual procedure. He made sure I was as fully informed as he could help me be and he covered all of the risk adequately.
Both the surgical competence and beside manner are real good in my estimation. These were just my personal impressions of my own personal experience and I am making no statements about what other people may experience.
I have the utmost respect for Dr. Kligman. He's stern with his patients but at the same time he's a very caring person.
If first impressions count I was really Impressed with his ability to explain a complex operation so that the patient is able to understand what's ahead of them.
His staff has gone out of their way to help me in any way they can.
So far I've not been able to find any faults with Him.
HE IS A TOP SHELF DR.AND HAS A LOT OF EXPERIENCE IN THIS TYPE OF SURGERY.
YES.We meet the second Tuesday of every month.
Excellent.
Both great
I had surgery with Dr. Kligman on November 14, 2001. I have not had my first post-op visit yet, but I believe I am doing very well. I had my first appointment with Dr. Kligman in June of 2001; surgery November 14, 2001. Dr. Kligman is probably the best surgeon I have ever dealt with, and unfortunately, I have dealt with a lot. He is knowledgable, serious, and competent. You do have to be patient waiting for your first scheduled appointment and in getting surgery scheduled (mainly due to insurance approval), but the wait is no different than it would be for any other specialist these days. Anyway, looking back, the wait is good. It really makes you evaluate what you are doing and the life long implications of gastric bypass surgery. Dr. Kligman and his staff are very helpful. Your calls are always returned by Claudia, and Dr. Kligman and his staff make sure you understand everything pre and post surgery. I look at my stomach (which is healing nicely), and I just cannot believe that through six small holes, he can do the proceedure! Dr. Kligman is no ordinary surgeon! In my final appointment before surgery, Dr. Kligman told me not to worry and to let him do the worrying. At that point, I knew I need not worry about the procedure and I did not. A+ to Dr. Kligman and his staff!
I met Dr. Kligman last week in a group session and then yesterday on a individual basis. Seems to be a down to earth person who knows he can do this surgery, and do it well. I believe he is a very competent surgeon. Dr. Kligman told me he was giving me a tool not a cure, and I respect him for that. Dr. Kligman was very organized, on time, and generally caring about what was right for me. I look forward to having Mark as a partner in my weight loss journey. I know he will be on my butt to loose the weight, and I hope to be the ideal male patient that he can brag about to other male patients.
Staff seems to really care, especially Claudia, ( the best I have ever met from a doctors office )who actually answered the phone every time I called, emailed back the same day after every email( sorry there were so many Claudia)and actually really cared about me. I originally started with a doctor in Pittsburg, won't mention his name, what a frigin zoo. Dr kligmans office was a blessing after that.
I honestly believe that Dr. Kligman is not only going to save my life, but then give me another chance at it. This time I won't fail.
Looking forward to September 14, 2001
Nov 9, 2001 As I sit here eight weeks post op down around 50 pounds, i realize how special Dr. Kligmans hands really are. He may not have the best bedside manner and he may not spend countless hours going over and over what we should already know but if you want to go home the next day, have no drains or tubes in you, feel good, back to work in a week, and losing pounds big time, complication free, then Dr. Kligman is the surgeon for you.
I have the utmost respect for this doctor.
Dr. Kligman is very "matter of fact" and is very informative, especially about the seriousness of this surgery. With the surge in popularity to have this surgery, Dr. K's schedule is overwhelmed, and you have to expect to wait a little while to see him. When you do see him, he will sit down & talk with you & answer any questions you have. If he seems a little hurried, don't take it personal, like I said, he is just so busy trying to keep up with everyone wanting this surgery. I had my surgery done at St. Vincent's hospital, rather than MCO where he routinely performs it. It was a last minute insurance authorization oversight to have the surgery done at a different hospital other than MCO. This was noticed only a few DAYS before I was scheduled! (This was my only negative experience, because this should have been caught WEEKS before my surgery date, instead of just a few DAYS before.) However, after alot of scrambling & juggling & worrying & crying, everything got worked out to have it done at St. V's instead. THANK GOD, or everything I'd gone through up until that point would have been for nothing because I couldn't have had the surgery otherwise. I felt like I was in good surgically competent hands with Dr. K., and when he made rounds to see me post-op, he had a pleasant bedside manner. As usual, he answered our questions and explained what was currently going on with my plan of care. I would highly recommend Dr. Kligman for this procedure.
First impression was that he was very informed and willing to answer any questions. That he made clear what his parameters for his doing the surgery. That you are responsible for your sucess and that the surgery alone will not be a miracle cure but a very helpful tool. That you and his staff make a team to your goal. He was extremely honest and clear in his presentation and expectations, said it in layman terms so could be easily understood.
My impression is one of confidence and sincerity. I am a nurse and was impressed with my surgical consultation and his thoroughness of preoperative evaluation.
His office staff is exceptional kind, caring, respectful, informative and available to answer questions
So far I have no negative feelings about Dr. Kligman or his staff.
He is an experienced surgeon and has expertise in laproscopic surgery and trauma surgery, is young, has a sense of humor and good manner with patients. I am confident that he can handle any problems that could arise during or after my surgery.
Dr. Kligman from the get go emphasises the importance of aftercare and the importance of being active pre and post operatively in a support group.
His aftercare is very structured and is in black and white to be referred to as needed, as a reminder for those of us who are forgetful at times.
Again he presented the complications at the pre appointment presentation, at your consultation and in a handout.
I am extremely impressed and feel fortunate that a co-worker referred me to him.
I have not had the surgery yet but feel he is an excellent clinician with an exceptional patient/ physician rapport.
The above is my personal opinion and if there are any changes I will amend my entry. I feel I have made the right decision for me.
