University of California, Irvine Healthcare Hospital
Dr. Nguyen has little bedside manner. If you are looking for hand holding-he is not your Dr. If you are looking for a perfectionist and from speaking to several of his patients after surgery an excellent and gifted surgeon he is your Dr. I have been a nurse for over 20 years and I have found many fine physicians such as this. When I have gone to my appointments the wait has been minimal. The real wait is for the appointment and or surgery date-each tipically 3 months away. Miltilde his coordinator is a likable person. She just needs to be reminded by frequent phone calls. I highly reccomend the pre-surgery information meeting for all considering this procedure. The Dr., diatician and a patient all explain the risks, details, and benifits in a honest straight forward manner.
I would suggest that anyone having surgery at UCD be sure to have a family member-preferbably a pro-active one be with you as much as possible. The nursing service was very poor (overworked and in many cases just didn't care). Don't expect hands on nursing care such as assistance with bathing, changing of linens or assistance with walking in most cases. I write this not to be critical, more to help you be prepared.
Dr. Nguyen is professional and thorough, though he doesn't use up valuable time chit-chatting. Considering how hard it is to get an appointment there, I appreciate that. He walks fast and talks faster. I have a doctor friend who has worked with Dr. Nguyen, and she says he is certainly a brilliant surgeon, even if somewhat lacking in bedside manner. I could see his subtle sense of humor while he dealt with a whiney resident in the hallway. heheee... I look forward to seeing him again. 5/30/1: He gets better and better each time I see him. Cool guy.
Dr. O`connell is a very good surgeon. He is concerned about the patient.I would refer him as a surgeon. His office on the whole are very helpful. The Dr.demands an after care program be followed with him by having you put a refundable deposit! Overall Dr.O`Connell is very good.He has surgical competence and good bedside manner. The hospital had a lot to be desired. The staff were not very plesant.I`m three weeks post-op
Dr. Nguyen is very business-like. A man of few words. I watch him keep a cool head in what seems a hectic environment as he goes from patient to patient in the clinic. In the hospital, he appears in a flash at your bedside, usually stern-looking, but will smile. He strikes me as someone who is in deep concentration, and the only thing that is important to him is the person he is with that moment. He seems easily annoyed with nonsense. He seems to fully understand that there are people who, no matter what diet they go on, will probably regain it. That's why he does this. He's probably one of the most competent surgeons I've ever met. I LIKE him! He's ok!
Dr. Nguyen is a great surgeon. He is very to the point when you first meet him, but he wants you to clearly understand what will be happening, what could happen, and what your part in your recovery will be. After the first appointment he was very personable. He spoke to my husband right after the surgery and provided him with all the details. He was concerned that he did not want us to go back to Reno for a week after he released me.. just in case. My husband was appreciative of his candor and concern.
There were no complications at all. Dr. Nguyen visited me everyday in the hospital, including Thanksgiving day. He also had several of his interns check up on me. I had plenty of attention and each of them were very nice, professional, and concerned.
My follow up appointments have also been very good. Each time he is happy to see me. He commends me on how I am doing and takes the time to listen to how I feel and what I've been going through.
I would recommend highly recommend him. Keep in mind though, he expects you to be a part of your recovery. The more you know about the procedure, the more research you do, and the more questions you ask... the more comfortable he will be in giving you this new tool!
Dr. Nguyen is extremely professional and very busy. He is always hurried and sometimes seems abrasive. His nurses often apologize for his abrasive mannner but quickly follow with statements like "He is a genius and the best at what he does."
My impression of Dr. Nguyen is that he is brilliant and competant, and I did see him smile once so he kind of grew on me. If I had to pick between a charismatic surgeon or one so focused on his work he doesn't have time to chat I'd pick the second, and like I said I did see Dr. Nguyen smile......once.
The office staff without exception at UC Davis are some of the kindest most caring professional people I've encountered!!!
Dr Nguyen has a very strucutured after program. I am also involved in his study at Uc Davis so yes aftercare is highly supervised.
After stating my concerns about Dr. Nguyen's whirl wind type office visits and questionable bedside manner, I still give him a 9 as a surgeon, and possibly a 10. Let's see if I have any complications or not.
UCD is a big corporation hospital not a prive hospital with private surgons. You need to be assertive with your MD in order to get what you need. On your follow-up mvisits they seem to only want to hear that everything is doing alright. Don't let them bully you. Tell them your concerns, byt don't whine
Dr.Nguyen is very clinical and informative he has not made me feel warm and fussy but his job is to inform me of the risk and not to be my best friend. The office staff is helpful and has kept me informed about my insurance ect.I have my pre op as my next apointment so I will find out more then . I went to a meeting to discuss the procedure that UCD offers once a mouth. They tell you about the diet after surgury and beyond and you can call the nurse with questions about after care.I have ask the people on this sight that have had him as a surgeon post op and they all love him.so from all that I know he is a good surgeon.
