University Medical Center Hospital
I am a RN and may have been expecting too much of my stay. One thing I found was a total lack of communication between shifts and departments. There seemed to be a lack of knowledge regarding the RNY procedure in general. I was extremely glad that I knew what to expect and what should be happening. The care in the SICU was very disappointing, however once I moved to the 3rd floor the care was excellent.
Now understand that the lack of pain management (oh your allergic to vicodin? Well then you get NOTHING!) and (yeah, I know you have that giant Internal Jugular line in, but I'd rather you take this extremely painful and pitiful shot of stadol instead) that was the MD's fault and for that I won't forgive him. The time I rolled on my tummy in my sleep and lay there hollering and begging for someone to come and help me for 2 HOURS, Unforgivable as well. But then some nurses were great. No diet information or assistance-once again the surgeons fault.
This hospital is way under staffed and lacking in good quality careing individuals. When my IV came out I had to call 3 times and 45 minutes later they came in to replace it. Twenty minutes before I left, they felt it necessary to change my IV. No help on diet given. Nurses and other employees would not help if it was not in their job description. I heard thats not my job several times. Finding out whose job it was became funny at times.
One of the only difficulties I saw was that there was not enough rooms. They kept me in MICU about an extra day and a half waiting for a room on the floor to open up. But honestly, the care in the icu was excellent and except that the toilet was separated from the rest of the ward by a sheet I would have happily stayed there the whole 5 days.
