St. Vincent Charity Hospital Hospital
The WLS unit at St. V's is put together just for bariatric patients. The equipment is special, the nurses only handle bariatric patients, so they know what to expect....this hospital was perfect for me and my needs.
I was a little discouraged when I was sick one night and my husband wasn't allowed to stay with me--we both thought the circumstances warranted a change in policy.
I was under the impression that the bariatric STAFF was the "cream of the crop" in nursing and care. I was very disapointed in the call button "system" they have in place. When you call the nurse, a "secretary" asks what you need. My voice was very weak and when I was inaudible, nobody came to check on me...I had to try to yell so the speaker across the room would pick up my voice. It was very exhausting. Also things I would ask would get lost in translation...EX: I asked for my pain medication 3 times...FINALLY an hour later I just called on the button screaming because the "secretary" had forgotten to tell my nurse. This also happened with ice chips, and my husband actually argued with a woman who claimed I never asked for them, instead of her admitting she was wrong. The surgeons were better than MOST of the nursing staff. I do wonder however if it was because I was in the hospital over the course of a holiday.?
Everything went of very well for the most part. My only real complaints are the horrible pain management (or lack there of) that I received. I was in tremendous pain and complained frequently that the pain meds were not working. I was completely blown off by the nurses. I also had one really bad nurse, but the rest of my nurses were angels.
