South Texas Health System Heart Hospital
Doctor is fantastic
Folks, if you live in the Rio Grande Valley , this is your surgeon!! Everything he said and did has been right on target! Thank you Dr. Reyes for helping me have a second chance where I might be able to do the things in life I dreamed of. I am grateful Sir...
My first impression is that he is a very busy person, Up to now I have had more contact with his office perssonel than him directly. I am certain once I get the go ahead from the insurance company I am certain I will get more time with the doctor.
My current concerns are as with I would have for any doctor:
1) follow up after the surgery during my stay at the hospital
2) Availability should something occur during night hours for any additional meds that are needed.
3) Compassion and comfort for the patient, Some can be completely desensitized since they perform the procedure repetatively.
Very skilled and caring surgeon.
Dr. Reyes and Staff. Gracias Por Todo.!!!! You Truely are the Best of the Best ! Dr Reyes Is a Very Professional Individual, who takes what he does Seroius , But yet down to Earth , Your Manner in talking to the Patience is Comforting. i Did Alot of Research before Selecting a place to have my Surgery.! And Being from San Antonio , There are a Number of Places I could have chosen to have the Surgery done .? But all Roads lead Me to Dr Reyes . At My First visit with Dr Reyes and his Staff , He f went over every detail and Answered any and All Questions .. His Staff and Aftercare / Support have been there for Me whenever I needed them . ! ! Thank You April.....All i have to say is Thank You Again !! For My New Lease on Life .
Fantastic surgeon. When I decided to have Gastric Bypass, I did some research and I discovered that he had performed the most bariatric surgeries in my area vs other surgeons. I also liked that he is considered a Center of Excellence surgeon which meant that he had to be good. When I met him for the first time in his office, I was nervous because for me, this surgery was a BIG deal, and I had no idea what he was going to tell me. He was very patient and kind. He answered all my questions to my satisfaction (even though I'm sure for him, it was the same question for the thousandth time that day). He had a wonderful bedside manner while I was in the hospital. I would highly recommend Dr Reyes. He has kept me on track and since my surgery, I have lost 150 pounds and have kept it off!

Dr. Reyes took over my care when Dr. Camacho left and went to New York. Dr. Reyes has been great. He has been my doctor now for 2 1/2 years. During that time he has kept a good eye on my progress, he finally told me this past summer what I should weigh and I got down to that weight. This last few months I have gotten off track and he has supported me in getting me back on track.
His staff is also great. The bariatric co-ordinators are a big help too. Paula Kilgore was the first co-ordinator that I met before I had my surgery, and then April took over almost a year after I had my surgery. They are both there now and host a great support group.
I am so happy that Valley Surgical and Dr. Reyes gave me back my life. I now have the energy to run after my nieces and nephews and my grandson.
If you live in the Rio Grande Valley I would highly recommend Valley Surgical and Dr. Reyes.
Dr Reyes is an ideal doctor. He is very knowledgeable, extremely sensitive to your needs and is exceptionally positive.
The first time I met Dr. Reyes was when I attended his seminar where he discussed the different types of weight loss surgeries. My first impression was how knowledgeable he was of the results each surgery type would affect each different individual and how our insurances would function.
I liked the Dr. Reyes immediately. Because he was there to help us become healthy, I made up my mind to have the surgery. I found him willing to answer all the questions asked of him. Unfortunately, my insurance plan required that I go on a 4 month diet under a doctor's care. Dr Reyes sent me to my family doctor for this requirement. She was very supportive of my choice to do the surgery. Once I completed the diet requirement I was scheduled for the surgery immediately. The doctor’s office handled all of the insurance requirements and got the insurance approval. I didn’t have to handle any of that. This was wonderful.
I would have liked to have had the availability of the support group during the 4 month diet requirement. I was unaware of this group and if I could have attended the support group during this time. I was ignorant of the 5 eating stages after the surgery. Hence, after surgery I struggled with what I was to do and had to us the handouts religiously for information and had a lot of questions. Dr Reyes is extremely supportive of the support group after care program. He always comes into the group, which meets at night, and asks if there are any questions and talks with everyone individually. His dietitian’s staff is very informative regarding weight loss surgery for 2 out of the three gals have had the surgery themselves and are bariatric nurses. I believe the trust level is high.
The only negative response I have regarding my experience is the office staff. They are pleasant most of the time, but seem very disorganized. I reported to the office yesterday for a 6 month follow-up review and they didn't have my appointment scheduled on the computer, yet I had my appointment card. This was one example, another is that I had a bleeding ulcer a year after surgery where by I had three infusions...this information was not placed into my file, but put into box. The girls just seem to be rushing around all of the time.
I look forward to seeing Dr. Reyes each appointment and I would not hesitate to refer him to prospective patients. Oh yea! I am only 10lbs away from my goal (doctor says that I have lost enough weight and I look wonderful). What a fantastic change in my life and I thank Dr. Reyes.
My surgeon is probably one of the very best at this kind of work. He is so incredibly busy that it was hard to schedule appointments with him post-surgery but I started seeing his partner, Dr. Garza. Dr. Garza is a wonderful surgeon (fixed my access port hernia) and together they make an excellent team. I have recommended them to several individuals including my daughter.
From first impression to almost 2.5 years later, I am a satified customer/patient. Their office staff has turned over in personnel but they too have a great demeanor. I am down from 350 pounds to about 235/240 and still dropping by minding excess carbs. Therefore, I am still in love with my band and still a staunch supporter of Doctors Reys and Garza of McAllen, TX.

I first had my gastic bypass done by another doctor that left me facing death in more then one hospital visit intill the a GI doctor asked Dr. Reyes to see me. He saved my life! he had to do 5 different procedures to fix the mistakes made by the other surgeon. For the first time since my bypass i feel great.I am still recovering but his staff has help me so much. he was alwaying making sure I am feeling fine. Dr. Reyes treats me as a part of his family, I do not feel Im just a job for him and its time for the next one to go under the knife. I would rate him at a 10 out of 10.
On Oct 12, 2010 I checked into the McAllen Heart Hospital for Gastric Sleeve surgery. As of today, Nov 21, 2010 (less then 6 weeks) I have lost 71 pounds. Thank you Dr. Luis Reyes and the McAllen Heart Hospital staff. You all did a fantastic job. It was much smoother then I ever anticipated. I also want to acknowledge Paula, Denice and Stephanie of the Mcallen Heart Hospital Weight Loss Center. You guys make a fantastic team and you answered all my stupid questions. I cannot thank you enough.
Before I decided upon Dr Reyes and the McAllen Heart Hospital I checked out weight loss surgery centers all over Texas. I spent 3 months gathering data before I made my choice. I give Dr. Reyes and the McAllen Heart Hospital five stars. I highly recommend Dr Luis Reyes to anyone interested in bariatric surgery.
