Rose Medical Center Hospital
For the most part, the staff was caring and compassionate. I had one nurse who just did not want to help me with my personal care issues which forced me to do things myself and put me in a lot of pain and stress on my incisions. One of the nurses in pre-op care asked me to scoot over in the bed and then said some comment about the beds are just not wide enough (maybe she didn't mean it to be mean, my family and I just found it to be an odd comment). There was also a male radiology technician who was not nice at all (on my second trip down) - a very nice gentleman had brought me back down for additional films and he was very pleasant and this other guy goes to wheel me into the room (finally) and makes a comment to the guy that brought me down about "man, you must be strong" - I was just not feeling well enough to say anything at that point. I found it difficult to walk in the hallways will all of the extra furniture laying around in them. It was hard enough to walk (especially with the walker and the IV pole) let alone maneuver around all of these items. On a bright note, the majority of the nursing staff, specifically Connie, Stephanie, Mary Lou, Caren and special thanks to a Resident named Heather - took exceptional care of me! Thanks to all of these wonderful ladies!
My stay at Rose went well for the most part. I felt cared for and understood for the most part. The nursing staff was short at times, and the nurses aides need some direction on the night shift. Day shift did very well as did evening. I was a bit concened when I awoke in recovery unit and tried to call my nurse but could not do so loudly and saw that all the staff was having a DONUT break away from patients! :)
4/11/04 I am happy to be home and recovering nicely. Today is 6 days post-op. Thank you everyone for the best wishes. I had bypass surgery first thing on Monday morning 4/5 and thanks to Dr. Snyder's expert capable hands I was out of surgery and heading to recovery unit in just about 2 hours. I was very surprised that I have experienced very little pain. Discomfort yes, but not so much pain. I was impressed with Dr. Shaffer, my anesthesiologist, who called me personally the day before and we talked about my medical history, she assured me she would take the best care of me, and she did. The pre-op nurse had some trouble getting my IV in and Dr. Shaffer and get it going. I have very bad veins. They are deep and they run and hide whenever someone goes to poke me. Most time the capable staff got me on the first time and they were drawing it a lot. I used pain meds the first day but really didn't feel the need after. I ended up needing a couple of pints of blood the 2nd day and they watched it very careful. The only real challenge I had was with radiology, and when I expressed concern the matter was corrected swiftly. One of the reason I know my stay was so positive was due to my very caring sister. She was there to help and she was phenomenal. I love you sweetie. Even though the staff is extremely attentive. I would recommend everyone have someone there to help out. She helped me out with logging my intake for the first 3 days as well as walking with me and helping me with all my personal care and basically being my advocate. I want to send out a special kudos to several nurses that I thought were exceptional. Connie, Kim, Ann and Carolyn. I think there should be some kind of award for these women that give such excellent care while at the same time portray sincere caring on an individual basis. I don't know how they do it but thank God they do.
Admissions were fine, Bloodwork took forever as I stated when I arrived that I as a Hard Stick.. they pretty much blew that comment off. It took 4 techs and 9 tries to get blood, as well as over an hour. While in Pre op, the nurses were attentive and the "jobs completed" My anethesiologist did call the night before and she was incredibly thurough and reassuring that she would take every precaution. She was very attentive and actually started my iv. The after care was pretty usual, the staff in recovery underestimated that my pain level could be that high... not knowing where I have come from with pain meds I believe might have been the communication error. The nursing staff was average with unlimited times I hit the call button and waited 30-45 mins for someone to come in. I was given wrong protein drink on my tray from nutrition once, and sugared popcicles, I however did know enough to ask, and that was a good thing.
