Penrose- St. Francis Weight Loss Surgery Institute Hospital
I had major concerns about this hospital before I had WLS. I have spoken to others that had terrible experience with the staff. Because of that I met with Patient Representative the day before, and stated all the concerns. She understood me and stated that she was going to give my family her card so if there was any issues she would look into them right away, plus she would be visiting me the day after WLS. Overall, I felt everything was good to excellant. ICU staff was very outstanding, and I appreciated my nurse very much.
The day after my surgery i woke up at 8am. My morphine drip had run out and I was in extreme pain. I called the nurse. My canula (oxygen) was disconnected from me and my pulse ox fell down to 74. I screamed for a nurse but was pretty hoarse from the surgery. I had to crawl out of bed and call my husband to call the hospital to get someone in. I was panicked because I couldnt breath and my lips were blue. A nurse came in with an attitude, she put in a morphine cartridge which should only take a moment, and instead of handing me a pump, she said first things first and she went over to write her name very slowly on the board Peg was her name. She then left for about 10 minutes and I was asking loudly for my oxygen, when she came back she told me they were all in a meeting, I said OK I had better make sure I have someone here for me each morning at 8 am or I might just die, afterall their reporting is more important. I told her I wanted a charge nurse and a patient advocate. I called my husband and best friend to come down, by now I was so upset I couldnt breath well even with the oxygen, this event caused me to have to stay in the hospital another day.
I do want to say that Scott Fisher is a wonderful surgeon, I am way ahead of schedule now on my healing. he was kind, open, never made me feel badly about my weight, he was always attentive to me. It is just too bad he cant operate at a decent hospital.
Housekeeping came to my room 1 time in 5 days, my bloody sheets were changed once, I had to call my friend to bathe me, there was a bug on the bathroom floor there for 3 days, it was there when I left. It was hard to get them to bring you water.
The one thing they did right was at night they kept me well medicated, probably because I was such a problem to them, but it was nice to rest.
I had a really good experience at Penrose Main. The only bad thing was the "bariatric bed" that they put me in. It did not work right and on my second night after open RNY it dropped suddenly all the way to the floor and I was scared to death it would happen again, even after they had it fixed. I could not get another one as they bring them in from Denver!!! I was on the 11th floor after I got out of ICU and they took really good care of me. I had to be re-admitted, again to the 11th floor and then was moved to the 6th floor and nurses there were not quite as nice or attentive, but were efficient.
