North Oakland Medical Center Hospital

I am not usually an overly demonstrative or complementary person, but I have to sing the praises of this hospital. This hospital is newly opened as Doctor's hospital. It is now owned by the doctors and it appears to have been totally refurbished from what I could see of the lobby, surgical suite and the floor I was on. I was told that my floor had been completely redone. It seemed like ever person that I came into contact went above and beyond to perform some special deed. I was an out of town patient and was with my wife and two young children (6 months and 2 1/2 years)so it was going to be a chore for my wife to visit me, particularly in the recovery room. We had resigned ourselves to dealing with this on our own, but during my pre-op they asked about our situation and the day before the surgery we were contacted (by Jamie from the hospital) and advised that the hospital had reserved a special room for my wife and children to stay in while I was in surgery. They arranged to have a nurse watch the kids so my wife could come and see me in recovery. Later, when I was on the floor in my room Jamie visited again and brought me internet copies of my local newspapers to read while I was in the hospital. This new hospital is obviously trying to be totally responsive to patients. Instead of the usual (competent) but seemingly disinterested healthcare, this hospital seems to be adding customer service to healthcare. It was clean, bright and everything seemed new. All of the nurses and aides were extra nice. I started with a roommate and he checked out. I was by myself most of the next day. In the afternoon I got a new roommate and he was in extreme pain (ruptured kidney) and agitated from a long stay in another hospital's er then a transfer. He was a likeable character after I got to know him a bit, but he was sure tough on the nurses at first. Ordering them around, cussing and generally being demanding (he even ordered me around a bit despite me being one day post op). These nurses didn't miss a beat. They simply responded and provided care, and addressed all of his concerns till he was comfortable, without a complaint or hint of an attitude wich would have been understandable given the circumstances. By the time I was checking out this patient was telling the nurses what "dears" and "sweet hearts"they were. Who knows if it will last, but I was fortunate to have been the recipient of some wonderful, patient focused, hosital care. I can't be more complimentary!

I hadn't heard of this hospital before my surgery, which mad me nervous. The staff immediately put me at ease during my pre-op visit. In general the staff was attentive (one day they were short staffed) and friendly. They always forgot me at meal times, but other than that, I do not have any complaints.

They gave me sugar filled food after surgery. I told them I couldn't eat it and asked for something sugar free. She said they had apple juice. Then returned and said that I wasn't allow to have it! This was typical of what happened. I had someone with me all the time (and I am grateful they didn't object). She fixed my bedding; showed me how to get up and helped me do it; noticed when my arm swelled because the IV had come out; etc. All things the nursing staff should have done.

The day staff nurses were great, helpful, took time to make sure I had everything I needed. The night nurse while compentent didn't anticipate my needs. I had to ask for more ice chips and ask that the urine hat been measured so I could go to the bathroom again, but she was there when I rang the bell and helped me.
