My surgery went well. Dr. Hagen was great, and his office staff were great. However, I find the dietician to be EXTREMELY negative and aggressive. If I could, I would switch to someone else.
My first impression of Dr Hagen was a quiet, but straightforward man, who made it quite clear the risks and benefits of having this surgery. His staff is quite friendly and easy to talk to. I really liked the fact that on the day of the surgery Dr Hagen reassured me everything would be alright. He made sure to see me at the hospital everyday that I was there. Even after I came home I was able to call him with any questions or concerns that I had. He is a great surgeon that is very thorough in his assessment of your health and will make sure an individual is ready both physically and mentally for this procedure. I would recommend Dr Hagen you anyone interested in having this surgery. My only concerns would be that I wished I could live closer to Toronto becuase accessing his aftercare program so a touch difficult for me.
Dr. Hagen was fantastic, his bed side manner was great. He really does care about his patients, he visited at least 5 times while I had my stay in the hospital. You couldn't ask for a better doctor
My first impression of him was.. \"wow this guy is super busy & must have repeated this \"consult info\" a million times & maybe once I've done all of the necessary footwork he will know that I am serious about this surgery. After meeting him again & \"googleing\" him to find out how good he was, I felt alot more reasured that I was in excellent hands. He is a very warm, caring & compasionate man & he is a top lap. surgeon.rnI feel very blessed that he was my surgeon.
My first impression of dr. Hagen was good. He seems very understanding and sympathetic, he took time to listen and answer questions--although I can see how one may feel overwhelmed due to all of the info that was provided, not to mention tons of emotions running on high.
Overall he seems very knowledgeable and competent.
I would advise future patients to inform themselves before their consultation in order to appreciate what the dr. has to say fully. Aside from dr. Hagen himself his staff members are kind and patient. I would give dr. Hagen an A+!

I would like to share what a positive experience I had with my surgeon, Dr. John Hagen. Not only did my surgery go flawlessly, his bedside manner while I was in the hospital was incredible (I think he stopped in to check on me at least 6 times). He is a kind, empathic, caring doctor and I am thrilled to know him and be under his expert care.
What was your first impression of him/her?
He was starit to the point, but very friendly and seems very smart.
How did your impression change over time?
My impression has not changed
How would you describe his/her office staff?
I do not like the staff, that may change ovetime, but i found them rude, and dont treat you as a individual.
What should future patients know about him/her?
He is strait to the point, ask what you need to know, and he will tell you. He will make you feel comfortable too.
How much does he/she emphasize aftercare?
from what i know so far, they are big on after care, which is great.
Does he/she have a structured aftercare program?
dont know much about it, i will have to find out
How did he/she address the risks of surgery?
He was blunt about it, and again starit to the point.
How would you rate him/her overall?
He is someone i am trusting with my life, so i think he is great.
Which is better, surgical competence, bedside
manner, or both great?
Both is great, but surgical compitence is best:)
After my next appointment I will have a better perspective on Dr Hagen. I have heard that he has alot of experience in laparoscopic surgery, which is definately a bonus.
