Dr Smitn is an excellent surgeon and has a great staff that will guide you in the process. Notice I said guide, it is ultimately up to you as to how successful you are. He has great aftercare. I rate him on a scale of 1 - 10 as 10. He is the best.

It is a long and hard journey to be approved by your insurance company. Do not give up be diligent.

The only thing I would change is one of the nurses. She does not seem to like her job very much. All patients, but especially bariatric need positive surroundings and support. She did not provide either. The other nurses were great!

I liked Dr. Smith from the first time I met him. He was quiet, and yet very thorough with his initial appointment. He is very safety oriented, and I am SO glad for that. My impression only improved over time. It was really nice to see him smiling at me after surgery, telling me that everything went very routinely, no complications at all! His office staff had to be really patient putting up with all of my phone calls... so I give them AAA **** ratings! Thank you, Deniece, Danielle, Nell, and Eric - PA extraordinaire! Dr. Smith really wants you to know that you will need bloodwork and regular visits for the rest of your life... because there are so many things that can go wrong that we don't automatically know about. I haven't been able to get to his support group yet, since I'm out of the area, but I intend to make it, and have met Sue Wood, his leader, and also the head of the Bariatric Program for the Wellstar Hospital Network. She is FABULOUS! She came to see me in the hospital and is just a doll. I rate this whole experience a 10! (Except for the guys who put in my PICC Line... mutter mutter, that was NOT fun, but they were atleast sympathetic and hey, it's not their fault that the machine didn't work that day.) (The only other downside was that it is a LOOOONNNNNGGGGG process from start to finish. It almost took me a year.) I would prefer surgical competence to bedside manner ANY day... but he has both. He is not overly effusive or talkative, but is friendly and patient.

I really like Dr. Smith and his office staff. He is very knowledgable and thorough. He was very clear as to what would happen during surgery and after. He answered any and all my questions. He seems to really care about his patients. My impression hasn't changed at all. The staff was wonderful... I drove them all crazy over the past year... I know I have called and spoken to Nell at least 50 times. But she has always made me feel like I wasn't bothering her each time I called. I work in the medical field so I know how it can be... Sorry Nell. It takes a while to get an appointment with Dr. Smith. But it is well worth the wait. Once I was approved I had a surgery date within the month. The entire office spoke of aftercare.
Overall I would and have recommended him to some of my patients and friends. I am grateful him and his office staff. They were a tremenous help to me. I would like to have both surgical competence and bedside manner in any physican I go too. And I found this with Dr. Smith. Thanks you guys...

He is a very gentle and kind man that is very soft spoken. He is professional and thorough. He will not operate if there is any chance for failure or potential problems.

Dr. Smith strongly emphasizes aftercare and insists that you attend educational classes preop with your partner. These classes are taught by a nurse who was also his patient.
She stresses the risks and the problems that
can arise after surgery. They give you plenty of information about how you should eat while in the hospital and after you go home, as well as supplement requirements for the different surgery types.

They also stress use of the support group and the resources available through this group. The same nurse that teaches the pre-op class also leads the support group. She is wonderful!

His office staff is very pleasant and work hard to make suitable arrangements. There was a member of his staff that I dealt with when I first put my name on my list. She did not return calls and was somewhat difficult to deal with. She is no longer working for Dr. Smith. So far, so good.

Very nice, quiet, not really gregarious. I had complications after the surgery (cardiac) and he was wonderful. His office staff is just okay I'd say. If you can deal with Denise or Nell you're okay. There wasn't anything that I didn't like about him. He emphasizes aftercare a lot and does have a structured program. All of the risks of surgery were discussed. I would rate him very highly overall. Both surgical competence and bedside manner are great. I recently moved to Colorado from Georgia and traveled back to have him do my surgery, that's how important it was to me for him to do it. He has an excellent reputation and has patients from all over the country.

I found that for the most part, the hospital and staff were wonderful. I had a problem with one staff member during my stay. But I informed my nurse and it was handled promptly.
