Barix Clinics - Michigan Hospital
I just had to update on my opinion of Dr. Poplawski. At my intitial consultation with him I thought that he was kind of distant and detatched. He was very informative so I was still happy with him as a surgeon. In fact my husband had another surgeon from the same clinic and he didn't give him near as much information that Dr. Pop gave me. It has been 9 weeks since my surgery and I have a much different opinion of Dr. Poplawski. He is neither distant or detatched. He is a very competent, carry, compassionate surgeon who I would (and have) highly recommend to anyone even considering having WLS. For some reason my body responds to pain and anesthesia differntly than most peoples do. My blood pressure drops WAY down. Dr. Poplawski and his staff were both aware and prepared for this so that when it happened, no one freaked and that made things much easier for me. All of the staff at the Ann Arbor BTC are top notch. If you are looking for a surgeon who will sugar coat everything and try to talk you into having the surgery, don't look here. However, if you are looking for a surgeon who is honest, and will give you EXCELLENT care both during and after surgery, than look no further. Dr. Poplawski is your man!
Dr. Poplawski was wonderful. He was very informative and understanding. I had some special considerations because I had previously had my spleen removed and that was a huge concern. He reassured me that he was familiar with my condition and that while the surgery would be more tricky, it would not be impossible. I would recommend him highly.
My impression of him didn't change over time because he was just as professional throughout the entire process.
The staff was professional.
I liked everything about him.
He is wonderful.
He doesn't emphasize aftercare as much as the rest of the staff does. The staff at the Bariatric Treatment Center is great about aftercare. Dr. Poplawski did call me himself to check on me a few days after surgery. That was very impressive to me.

Excellent
Both great!
Dr. Poplawski was professional and answered my questions, and did display the dry sense of humor I've heard so much about. But if you are expecting someone warm and cuddly, you'll be disappointed. Well, that's diversity, so not everyone can be a big lap dog like me! BTC Ann Arbor has been very patient and friendly with me...they've got great staffers. I was told I must attend a support group meeting prior to surgery, and aftercare was mentioned, but not in great detail. I believe that he felt I was knowledgeable and comfortable with my decision and didn't feel it was necessary to hold my hand. I was touched, however, when he wanted to be assured that I had help at home following the surgery, as he knew I was divorced. My opinion of him at this point is based on what I've seen on this site and his track record...I believe that I am fortunate to be able to go through BTC and even more fortunate to have Dr. Poplowski, who seems to have a great deal of happy patients.
9/00 - I went back for my 6-week follow up and I still can't say enough about BTC and Dr. Pop. I was an hour late for my appointment (after getting lost, duh), and they were very accommodating. He assured me that I was doing very well, and again asked who I was living with. He was also much more open this time and I was impressed that he remembered me. The staff at BTC is first rate - from the techs to the nurses aides. Very compassionate, knowledgeable and professional. I would HIGHLY recommend BTC and Dr. Pop to anyone.
Dr. P asked me immediately about what type of support I had for aftercare, which impressed me. He seemed very straightforward and thorough. Some have commented that he seemed a bit distant, but I did not find him that way. He is very calm and low key,and said a few things that showed me he was really listening to what I was saying, not something Doctors are known for! I believe he addressed a lot of information, and then BTC's patient counselor, Melanie, came in and was very frank and informative about her experiences with the surgery and postop. I haven't had the surgery yet, will comment later.
He was very professional. I was a little put off at first, because of his dry humor, but realized that he has probably heard it all and sometimes you just want to go home. The staff was extremely helpful and curtious. I was very comfortable at the office, it is designed for "us". The doctor was extremely in depth in explaining procedures, etc. He was especially concerned about my depression and that I should have a support network in place before he would consider surgery. So I got together with my family doctor, a therapist, and a psychologist from the office and came up with a plan, which was submitted to the doctor. He called me personally at home about a month later, and talked briefly with me about the plan and said I had done good and now I have a surgery date. If nothing else, I truly believe that he cares about me and I would rate him a 10.
Dr. Poplawski seems like a nice guy. I personally know two representatives at Bariatric Treatment Centers in Ann Arbor and one of them said he is probably the nicest Dr of them all. He had that dry sense of humor I've heard so much about. He seems to smile upon family members being supportive (my grandmother came with me) and seemed glad to know that somebody would be with me throughout my post-op. He answered all of my questions to my satisfaction. He seemed to make sure I understood the risks and possible complications of the RNY. He really stressed the importance of the post-op aftercare. I was really nervous about the consult and he made me feel at ease. He appears to really have his stuff together inside and out. I would definitely recommend him.
I really like the doctor he made me and my family feel extremely comfortable. He answered all of our questions and drew diagrams when explaining the surgery. He was very open about the after care and what I and my family needed to do to make this procedure a success. Some people may think he is abrupt but I felt very confident in his knowledge and surgical skills. He explained everything in detail and I would rate him prior to my surgery as excellent.
I will update after surgery and rate him again.
My first impression: He was very nice.
nothing changed I still think he is nice and very understanding.
The staff was wonderful, I didnt feel like a fat person. I was treated with respect not looked down apon!
He seemed kind of quick..
come with lots of questions .. he will answer them all!
ALOT on after care... He said if I didnt get out of bed 4 hours after surgery .. then he would come get me out of bed!
yes he did address the risks of surgery. I was fine with it all at the time but am more worried now.
i would give him an 8
both on some level but i would prefer surgical comeptence over anything.
I thought Dr.P was a nice guy and very friendly. He explained the procedure and drew on a board and was very easy to understand. He seemed to be very understanding and sympathetic. I have to re-visit him Aug.9 'cause I'm past 6 months since my first visit and I am looking forward to seeing him again. He reminded me of the photographer on "Just Shoot Me." He went over the after care and took the time to answer all of my bizarre questions.
