Barix Clinics - Michigan Hospital
I was very impressed with Dr. P. He was compassionate yet factual. I didn't feel he had a hidden agenda to do as many procedures as he can, but rather made sure the surgery was for you. The office staff was professional. I left feeling confident that if I was approved for the surgery I was in good hands.
I felt I had great care here. I liked the staff very much and liked that everyone there was there for the same reason. Gave me things to talk about with people when walking around and around the nurses station with our IV poles. Nurses answered all my questions and helped me whenever I needed it. Was a good experience overall.
Dr. Poplawski was very personable and confident he asked very pointed and complete questions. I felt after speaking with him that he one was qualified and two would take great care of me. He had a good sense of humor and had me feeling comfortable. BTC did not seem organized but after I complained, they more than compensated as the office I was at is new. Office manager responded and moved eveything quickly.
I’m a nurse and my expectations of health care facilities and personnel may tend to be more critical, but I had my surgery at BTC Sept.01, and I was truly impressed with every aspect of the whole experience. Pre op was smooth for me and the office and insurance people were efficient and always very accommodating. The nursing, dietary, respiratory, and lab staff was excellent. Several of the nurses had also had the procedure done and knew exactly what we were going through, as well as what to expect immediately post op. The facility is spotless, the gowns are adequate, and when you 1st get to your room there is a flower for you on your bedside table =) They provide a wonderful package full of toiletries, and I was given a pair of tongs for personal hygiene that worked great. I think because every patient there has had the same procedure, everyone seems to be able to commiserate together. Walking the halls you hear encouragement from everybody. Surgery is hard no matter where you are, but I was impressed with my doc (Batay). (I appreciated not having to wake up to an NG tube down my throat). They are extremely knowledgeable and thorough with your post op care as well. I remember I was so astonished to get a call from my nutritionist telling me I could progress to the next stage in my eating, and was I having any problems or questions. All in all I’d say they met all of my expectations …and more.
Although I was a bit disappointed in February 2002 when I had my WLS (staff shortage, many nurses/aides not compassionate, too few nurses), it was quite the opposite when I had my hernia surgery in 12/02. I found the staff to be many in numbers and ALL extremely knowledgeable/compassionate and am very pleased at the turn-around I've seen in this area. However, the bad news is that I got a very nasty infection--but my questions to BTC fell on deaf ears when I called them. Finally, 2 weeks later I was seen only to be told that it was "topical" infection. Two days later I was seen again, the wound had to be opened up because of the infection and the nightmare really began. If I had to do it over again, I would have 1) insisted that I be close to the top of the list of surgeries that day, 2) gone to St. Joe's Hospital for the hernia repair. What was to have been 10 days off of work, turned out to be 10 weeks off of work.
I was a little surprised with Dr. Poplawski at my consultation. I thought it would be him trying to sell me on the surgery. This was not the case at all. Do not get me wrong he is very much for the surgery but he wants to make sure it is right for you. He pushes you getting counciling very hard so you can deal easier with all of the changes. Over all I would say he is a straight forward and nice guy.
The office personnal were nice at my consult but when I called a couple of weeks latter the girl was very rude. I could tell she was busy and she asked to call me back later and never did. I also had a really hard time getting my insurance person to call me back. Her message said she would call back within 24 hours but it was 3 calls and a week and a half later before she finally returned my call.
