William O'Malley Bariatric Surgeon M.D., F.A.C.S.
Impression:
Extremely nice
No questions too small - he explains and takes the time to clarify!
His staff - they were extremely personable and kind.
He is not a "charismatic" individual, just extremely nice and an expert in his field. He is a general surgeon that specializes in Bariatric surgery - normally the Roux en Y bariatric surgery, and some Distal RNYs only in specific cases.
Dr. O'Malley feels very strongly about aftercare! It is mandatory to agree (and sign an agreement) that you will follow up as structurally laid out. Reasons are three-fold. 1-Your own health; 2-procedures are forever changing-you need to be up-to-date with all information in regards to your surgery/condition; 3-Hospital requires follow up information to further justify surgeries like this and to maintain funding for us! VERY IMPORTANT - both for yourself and ones that follow in our footsteps.
In regards to surgery risks - these were all addressed in his MANDATORY 3 hour session in NY. Dr. O'Malley himself conducted the info session explaining procedures, and possible complications, and the long term effects.
Deeper/personal concerns were addressed privately in our one-on-one consultation that same day with Dr. O'Malley .
I have investigate numerous surgeons, hospitals - so far Dr. O'Malley rates at the top of the heap!
He is known for his surgical competence; care and concern !
Where before the info session and meeting with Dr. O'Malley, I was still very nervous, and a part of me was still a little hesitant.... Now I am SO looking forward to the surgery - and my new start on life!!!!
Dr. O'Malley is like a breath of fresh air. He is very professional and explains everything in great detail. He is great about answering any questions you may have without making you feel stupid for asking.
I found him to be very personable and friendly and greets you with a handshake which is more than I can say about other surgeons I have encountered.
His nurse practitioner Kim is also great. She is very friendly and caring and I feel very comfortable with her.
His office staff were very nice as well and Diane was great at getting back to me with any information that she needed.
I have been back to see them 3 times since I had my surgery and any questions I had were followed up on immediately.
I would rate him a 10 + + + and would recommend him to anyone.
His surgical competence is great and he is very thorough.
The only downfall of this whole thing was waiting to hear back from Diane. I know Dr. O'Malley's office is a very busy one and I think he could use some additional staffing. My understanding is that he does have some additional staff in place.
My first impression was that he seemed to be really young to be so involved and experienced. I had no doubts however that he knew what he was talking about and I am confident he is the best at what he does.
His office staff were friendly and welcoming. They were extremly helpful and went out of their way to make sure that everything was organized and in order.
Honestly I would have to say there is nothing that I did not like. I can't say anything I like least as there was nothing I didnt like.
Dr O'Malley stresses this is not a cure it is only a tool. You can only succeed if you work at it, exercise eat right and make all the mental changes you need to. He makes it mandetory to see a nutritionist and a psychologist. He also provides you with information for a support group.
Dr. O'Malley went through all the risks and emphasized what causes the complications and what they do to try and prevent these from happening. We had to attend a 3 hour seminar for which he went into great detail with illustrations of the anatomical changes that will be made along with all the new diets we will have to follow and explained all the benefits versus risks.
I feel that surgical competence is the utmost importance but with this surgeon we lucked out not only is he a brilliant surgeon but he is respectful and compassionate.
at my very first app't (an info app't),i was scheduled for surgery for 6 weeks later! Times certainly have changed! the dr. said to me that ishould schedule my date and then I could think about it. I saw his nurse 1 other time and that was it. the next time i saw him was the day of surgery and i would not have known him if he hadn't introduced himself again at my bedside (in the o.r.!) idid not find him to be personable but he's a hell of a surgeon and i consider myself a success. i lost 242lbs. in 14 months!
To the point, didn't waste any time or spend extra time with me. Was very nice though and if I needed the time, I am sure he would have spent it with me. Lots of people have complained about him and his lack of interest in them after surgery, but I have found him to be caring and concerned and able to reach. His office staff is excellent and very understanding. I believe they are overworked though. I am used to my family doctor who takes the time with me and makes me feel special. Dr. OM is to the point and does not waste time. He is friendly, but does not take the time to have idle chit chat. He expects his patients to be practicing better eating habits prior to surgery so their life after can be more successful. He recently started a support group at his hospital which I have only attended once. He did review the risks of surgery at his open session. I would rate him an 8 out of 10 with 10 be excellent. I did not want any other surgeon doing this surgery but him because he has a very good record. I consider both competence and bedside manner to be of utmost importance and feel that all surgeons need to work on their bedside skills.
Dr. O'Malley is one of the most experienced (very important) surgeons, doing this type of surgery since 1994. I believe that he is creeping up on, or has surpassed 2,000 procedures. His bedside manner is professional and business-like but concerned. Frankly, I'd rather have a skilled and professional surgeon operate on me, than a stand-up comedian.
His office staff is professional and efficient, if a little over-worked.
Future patients should have their ducks in a row in terms of questions to ask him and concerns to discuss. He will make time for you and answer your questions honestly, but he is a very busy man.
There is a structured after-care program and he is a stickler about it.
He was very candid about the risks associated with the surgery.
His surgical competence is excellent. I have heard some people gripe about his bedside manner, but for me, he was exactly what I needed. He instills confidence in his patients, which is critical. As stated previously, he is professional in his approach with patients. Some might misinterpret that as a bedside manner that is lacking. I did not. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend Dr. O'Malley to anyone who seeks a competent and experienced surgeon.
One final note. When I returned for my one-week check-up I came bearing gift baskets and thank-you cards. One for Dr."O" and his staff, and one for the fabulous nurses and technical staff of 4 West at Highland. They were all touched, including Dr."O". I think it would make a difference if more of us made the effort to say "thanks for your skill and kindness" and for giving me a second chance at a healthy life. Apparently, too few take the time to say "thanks".
I was approved by OHIP on October 13th and was fortunate enough to get into the October 20th Bariatric Seminar hosted by Dr. O'Malley. My first impression was that he is very knowledgable of both the surgical procedure and the necessary after-care lifestyle changes. My personal meeting with him was short, but understandably so, as there were 12 other patients waiting for one-on-one consultations that afternoon. He was to-the-point and I was satisfied in the level of confidence he instilled in me.
His office staff and the Highland Hospital facility were great. I have been back for my pre-ops and my surgery date is coming soon .... December 15, 2004. Wooo Hooo
