I liked Dr. Barker from my 1st encounter with him. I believe he is an excellent surgeon with a caring and informed staff. I would caution anyone going to him that he is VERY busy and he concentrates on seeing people PRE-op. I have actually not seen him since my surgery. On my follow up visits, I have seen his internist, whom I love! I don't feel slighted in the least that Dr. Barker has handed me over to his internist.rnrnThere is a written post op plan. I have had 2 appointments with the staff at Nova, the bariatric program at Vista Hospital, where I had my surgery. I assume the plan was developed by Dr Barker and the Nova staff. rnrnI have always felt like Dr Barker's staff is available to answer any questions I have. I just haven't had any problems, so it hasn't been necessary to call upon them.rnrnI would highly recommend Dr. Barker to anyone considering WLS.
Dr. Barker was very friendly. I didn't feel ashamed (for once) about being morbidly obese in front of a doctor! He took time to answer all my questions. His office staff is great: helpful, friendly, cheerful, always there to answer any questions and to help organize, for me, a second procedure to take place during the same surgery so I wouldn't have to have 2 surgeries. I think he may take on too many patients as he seems so busy. Surgery scheduled for Aug. 6, 2007. I will be back with more post op. Here I am again, 13 days post-op. Unfortunately, the second surgery was not performed at the same time as my RNY so I will have to go under the knife again in a couple of months (not looking foward to that!). Got my staples out -- what a relief. The nurse was gentle and I didn't even realize she had finished even though I was sitting up and chatting to her. That's GOOD! Dr. Barker came in for a visit and took his time to make sure I was ok (I had some serious breathing problems post op and had to stay from Monday till Friday, instead of going home on the Tuesday). He was very attentive and answered all my questions even though there was pandemonium in the office outside the exam room. He is a great surgeon and has a terrific bedside manner. He is easy going, genuinly interested in the wellbeing of each and every one of his patients, all of whom seem to adore him. He is overworked but has hired Dr. Thompson to help and Dr. T. is a wonderful, calm, kind, understanding person -- a natural extension of Dr. B. They have worked together in several other offices and are a great combo. Dr. Barker's father is even involved and very helpful. He gave me some chewable iron supplements to try since I was not taking any and it is very important to take it. Billy, who also works in Dr. B's office, also visited with me to see how I was doing post op. I can't reccommend the whole medical and office staff enough. I knew I could put myself in their hands and be alright. Dr. Childs, the doctor at the hospital, took great care of me when I was experiencing breathing and bladder problems. If you are looking for a trustworthy, experienced, cohesive and caring team, these are the people to see. Dr. B. is the best in the entire U.S.A., I have no doubts! I guess the only negative thing I could say is that Dr. Barker tends to over work himself -- that's just my opinion -- but he is so giving and caring that it really is difficult to find something negative to say about him and his colleagues.
I SAW DR BARKER THURSDAY 8/16 FOR MY 1ST VISIT AND I WAS VERY IMPRESSED. THE WAITING ROOM WAS VERY CROWDED, WHICH IS A GOOD SIGN THAT HE'S A GR-8 DR. rnALL THE STAFF MEMBERS WERE ALL FRIENDLY AND PROFESSIONAL. I HAD ORIGINALLY CHOSEN ANOTHER DR TO DO MY SURGERY AND I WASN'T IMPRESSED WITH HIM AT ALL SO I DECIDED TO CHANGE DR'S AND THEN I MET DR WADE BARKER AND I KNEW THAT I HAD CHOSE THE RIGHT DR. I SAW SEVERAL DIFFERENT PEOPLE IN HIS OFFICE SETTING UP APPTS FOR TESTS THAT I HAVE TO GO THROUGH AND INSURANCE AND I WAS IMPRESSED WITH THEM ALL.
Dr. Barker appears to care about his patients and he is technically excellent as a surgeon. His office staff is always busy as is his office and I have never been there when I didn't have to wait at least 1 hour before being seen. However, this is the nature of the beast. If you have no problems, the day goes quickly, if not....He apparently runs a support group once/month but I have not been to any yet.
My first impression of his office was BUSY, BUSY, BUSY!!! I was the last patient he saw that day and we didnt really \"talk\". Very professional but kinda dry. Other patients have told me that the second appointment is different and I am hoping it is. BUT I did not choose him for his charm but because he has the reputation for being a fine surgeon and that is bottom line!!!! rnrnHis office personnel so far are great! Always willing to help when I call. Dale, the benefits coordinator, is also very helpful.rnrnJust an FYI. If you are having your EGD at Doctor's Hospital, be aware that the ONLY pathologist they have there (Dr. Medford McCoy) is NOT in network for EMPIRE BCBS so you WILL be stuck with the bill!!!!!! Even though I verified that the hospital and my surgeon were in network, SILLY ME, I didnt think of the pathologist!!! rnrnI love Dr. Barker but not happy about this whole situation! If you have BCBS and have an EGD scheduled at Doctor's I suggest you have it changed to Renaissance or make sure that you are covered!rnrnCall Dale or Erline!
I'm so glad I was referred to Dr. B's office! The staff was wonderful for the pre-op, and I expect the surgery and post-op to go just as well.rnrnPost-Op: Thank God for Dr. Barker. I've lost over 10 lbs since the surgery without a single problem. The staff was awesome. They get busy, they get overbooked, but it was so, so, so worth it. They only get backed up because they will take the time you need, not give you just the time they have.
Wonderful first impression which has carried through to other visits. While he has a busy office and the wait can be long he gives you 100% of his attention when you are in the room with him. Based on my experience, I believe he is a perfectionist. Other then some discomfort with my incisions I could not even tell he had performed surgery on my stomach. The pre-op tests were scheduled quickly and I was approved by insurance (Tricare) within a month. I would highly recommend him to anyone seeking a top rate surgeron in the Dallas metro area.
