Timothy Duckett Bariatric Surgeon M.D., F.A.C.S.
I had heard and read many things about Dr. Duckett in a negative sense compared to his partner Dr. Oweis. Patients found him to more abrasive, not as delicate, a little rougher in how he put things as well as how he handle things.
The moment I met Dr. Duckett I knew we were going to get along. I have enjoyed having him as my surgeon. I have met with Dr. Oweis once and Dr. Duckett the rest of the other times. I much prefer Duckett. I, however, am one who prefers information straight up and not "sugar coated". Tell me what to do, how to do it, etc and I'll get it done. I don't need fluffy speeches.
Both emphasized that this procedure is a TOOL not the FIX. They both explained what would be done and what would need to be done at home post-op. The risks were discussed very thoroughly including the day of surgery.
Duckett did both pre-op and release day information with me and I was very satisfied with his care on both occasions.
Their office staff has been great to work with. Beth is absolutely wonderful. She is the nurse you talk to whenever something needs done. They worked really hard with me on scheduling appointments, both with them and for all my testings, so I missed the least amount of work (I'm a teacher).
He is a very concerned and empathetic man. I still feel that way, 3 years later. He is patient, concerned, and does remind me thath being obese was something I could have avoided. The office staff, especially his nurse, and appointment clerk are great-very personable. What I liked least about him was one of his partners, but attribute the old adage \"you can't pick your family\", which could be true in his case when it comes to partnerships. He will offer new patients all kinds of support, a listening ear, a major opinion on decision making (fills, problems). A great aftercare is available that includes a support group (monthly meetings), newsletter, visits to a nurse educator/inspiration and personal support. Aftercare is greatly emphasized as he wants to keep track of all his patients' health and history. His nurse educator is in constant communication with him and will contact him for you when you come to issues with her that she is unable to solve, or when she and the patient feel it is time for another fill, or decrease in fluid. The risks of surgery were stressed in a formal seminar that anyone considering this surgery MUST ATTEND before getting an appointment, also while meeting with him and during the consult with the psyche staff. I would rate him 100 percent overall, not just because I like him but also because he is a pioneer in this field. Both are great and both are necessary. Had I met first with his partner, I may have decided to put the surgery off due to the lack of \"bedside\" manner. Surgical competence is necessary because (of course) nobody wants to end up as a statistic otherwise.
Dr Duckett and Oweis have been wonderful. They are very experienced with the lap band surgery. They stress it is just a tool and always remind you that you have to stick to 1200 calorie diet and do 30 minutes of aerobic exercise daily. They both are very busy and appts are very short, but then I didn't have a lot of questions due to my research and friends I know that have had the surgery. They both really want you to succeed. His nurses are also supportive and helpful. There is a monthly support group at St Lukes Hospital which my insurance requires me to attend. Jo Lynn, the lap band nurse is wonderful. I can also email her if I have questions. I have been happy with all the care provided by Drs. Duckett and Oweis...and I am a health professional.
I didn't see Dr. Duckett until the day of my surgery. I saw his partner, Dr. Oweis. My first impression of Dr. Oweis was of a knowledgeable, pleasant physician. I felt he kind of rushed the appointment, but otherwise there was nothing negative. My second appointment, just 3 days before surgery was also with Dr. Oweis. Again, he came in and kind of rushed things but was pleasant.rnThe office staff have always been pleasant and helpful.rnThe only thing I didn't like about Dr. Oweis has been the fact that he seems to always be in such a hurry. Although he gives you time to ask questions, you don't even get them out of your mouth before he says \"O.K.,well then we'll see you next time.\"rnDr. Duckett and Dr. Oweis stress aftercare by requiring that patients follow up with a staff nurse monthly (and as needed by the physician). Options are given on how one goes about this aftercare. Patients can either set up a personalized office appointment with the nurse or follow up with the nurse at the monthly seminars and support group meetings. The nurse also helps determine when fills are necessary or follow up with the physician is needed. She kind of acts as a go between.rnDr. Oweis addressed the surgery with it's risks on my first visit and Dr. Duckett went over them again with both myself and my husband on the day of my surgery.rnOverall, I feel very confidant in Dr. Duckett's surgical skills. His bedside manner was brief, but to the point. He is not a \"hold your hand\" kind of doctor, but that's not what I expected either.rn12/28/05-any problems that I have had so far along the way, Dr. Duckett has been very helpful and takes time to listen to me as well as explain what he thinks the problem may be. He has been great.rn8/22/06 Read my profile, both here and on www.lapbandtalk.com Trust me, these guys may start out great and nicey nice. But, if you have some complications and need their help, help that may not conform to their textbook of norms............they are NOT the guys you want to see. They are harsh, they can be mean and quick to judge YOU. Yes, you as a person and you as a patient, not necessarily your medical problem. For me, they have decided I have \"anxiety\" rather than gall bladder attacks or reflux associated with being too tight. I've also had the experience of them putting stresses on me to lose \"X\" number of pounds in a certain amount of time. If these are the things you are looking for, go for it. I'm leaving the practice.
Dr. Duckett and Dr. Oweis were absolutely wonderful. All of my appointments went really well; they answered all of my questions thoroughly and explained everything very clearly. They took the time with me and demonstrated genuine concern for me as their patient. I extremely enjoyed their bedside manner both before, during and after the surgery. I look forward to checking in with them in a few days to show them how well I have been doing :-). I was recommended by a friend to them, and in turn I also highly recommend them.
I met my surgeon, Dr. Timothy Duckett, several times before my surgery and was always glad I chose him because he made me feel comfortable and wasn't in such a hurry that he couldn't answer all my questions (I brought a list with me:)
He made sure I knew all the possible complications from this surgery and that WLS is simply a tool and that it will NOT do the work for me.
On the morning of my surgery, he explained to my family exactly what would happen during surgery and answered all of THEIR questions as well.
After surgery, he came out of the OR and told my family how well my surgery went and even told them all the important things that I would need to do after surgery and once again answered the questions they had after my surgery.
During my first week post-op, I had to call his office twice for different pain and nausea medications and my calls were promptly returned even when I called at 11:??
His bedside manner leaves nothing to be desired and he has a wonderful aftercare program in place and strongly encourages his patients to participate.
I also liked that he required a commitment from me to excercise daily before he would recommend the surgery as it showed me that he truly wanted me to succeed and not just collect a payment from my insurance company.
His office staff has to be the MOST accomodating staff I have ever had the pleasure to deal with!!
I have absolutely no reservations about choosing him as my surgeon or recommending him to another future WLS patient.
Have a wonderfully blessed day,
Amber
I DID NOT MEET THE SURGEON UNTILL THE DAY OF MY SURGERY DUE TO MY SCHEDULE AND 4 KIDS. THERE ARE 2 SURGEONS IN THE OFFICE AND I DID PREFER DR. DUKETT. HE SEEMED VERY ENERGETIC AND POSITIVE. THE FOLLOW UP IN THE OFFICE IS GREAT. YOU WILL SEE A NURSE EVERY MONTH FOR WEIGHING AND TO DISCUSS PROBLEMS. PLUS YOU CAN SEE A DIETICIAN PROVIDED BY ST. LUKES HOSPITAL.
THEY STATED THAT THE PEOPLE THAT FOLLOW-UP WITH AFTERCARE ARE MUCH MORE LIKELY TO LOSE MORE WEIGHT. I THINK SURGICAL COMPETENCE WAS MUCH BETTER THAN BEDSIDE MANNER. HE SEEMED TO NOT BE THAT INVOLVED IN THE AFTER PROCESS. BUT HIS STAFF ARE MORE INTO THAT AREA.
AT THE HOSPITAL I DID FEEL PRETTY ALONE AS FAR AS THE NURSES ANSWERING QUESTIONS. THEY WERE NOT SURE OF HOW LONG NAUSEA WOULD PERSIST AND SEEMED TO NOT KNOW ALOT ABOUT THE SURGERY.
I liked Dr. Oweis very much. However I have to do a 3-6 month diet with my PCP per Medical Mutual. I asked his office nurse to submit it now and just maybe they might approve me without the diet. So I cannot comment yet on all the other questions yet.
I am 2 1/2 weeks post op now. I met Dr. Oweis's partner Dr. Duckett 2 weeks before surgery. He was very nice and professional. Although as with Dr. Oweis he is very quick. I think these Doctor's are good Doctor's but need to take classes on how to spend more time with their patients. And be a bit more compassionate with their WLS patients. They are general surgeon's so WLS surgery patient's are not their only patients. They do have an aftercare program. I see Dr. Duckett one more time and then I am to see his nurse every month thereafter. And then if I need a fill one of the Doctor's will do it. They did explain the risks of surgery. Their office staff is average.
