Thomas A. Jones Bariatric Surgeon M.D., F.A.C.S.
Dr. Jones was great. He's a busy man, but made me feel important when I did see him. I've spent more time with his staff, which is fabulous!
I met Dr. Jones after I had qualified and been approved by insurance. We spent a lot of time talking about pros and cons, risks, and his recommendations for me. Then we scheduled the date!
His office staff is great. All of the bariatric nurses have actually had the surgery themselves, which is a great boost in comfort, and makes me feel comfortable calling them with questions or concerns I have. They are all wonderful!
The pre-op program is very comprehensive, meeting with a dietician, psychologist, etc. Aftercare is structured, with scheduled post-op visits and dietician visits, and support groups are available. The visits with the dietician are very detailed, and you get a handbook that takes you through what your food intake should be like during specific timetables after surgery. His food introduction schedule is very conservative, which, from what I've read, is the safest way to go. It gets a little monotonous during the clear liquids phase, but it's such a small amount of time in the big picture!
Dr Jones is awesome! So is his staff! Much better than the first surgeon I picked, 200% better! Future patients of his should know he is very caring, honest, and even though I havent had the surgery yet, I feel completely safe with him. He has a dietician you meet with alot before surgery and after, but thats good! He has you come back one week after surgery,3 months, 6 months, one year, and then annually thereafter. He tells you right up front what all the risks are, but hell, you are so close to those risks already you wont care lol I dont think there will be anything negative to say about him or his staff, but if I do find something, I will come back and let you know. :)
9-22-2003 update: He is still awesome! He has a few night nurses that could use a little education on how to be warm and caring, but heck, all hospitals are that way LOL
Dr. Jones is a very kind and caring doctor. He seemed a bit hurried (my first time with him) but answered the questions I could remember at that time. His nurse, Teri is so great! She has been a blessing to me. It appears the aftercare program is excellent. One thing that makes this barratric clinic so great is that many of the staff have had the surgery also and so they speak not only from knowledge but experience as well.
Dr. Jones spoke of the risks as did Teri his nurse. I appreciate having a doctor with both surgical competence and bedside manner and from what I'm told Dr. Jones has both.
My first opinion was that he was rather abrupt; but that he had taken the time and effort to put together a GREAT support team. Prior to my surgery I read favorable comments from other patients on this site and I felt better. On the day of surgery he stopped to see me a couple of times before the surgery and then after the surgery. One of the nurses in pre-op described him as a complete doctor; one with good operating skills and good bed side manner. She was right. The day after my surgery Terri came to see me which was very nice. The nurses that I had at the hospital were all kind and very helpful. Laproscopic surgery seems to me to be the only way to go. The pain was minimal. My only pain was the pouch spasms when I ate or drank any thing. Walking after each sip and medication soon solved this problem. My only complaint is that broth is too salty and the drinks are too sweet. Some of the sugar-free popsicles would have been a treat.
My daughter is an R.N. at the hospital. She told me about Dr.Jones.She gave me a video tape of Him talking to staff about the surgery.I liked him in the video as well as when I met him the first time.I felt he was very concerned and caring. He told me he has been doing them 15 years, and lost 3.[They were all high risk].Visiting and finding out our families Knew each other helped me be comfortable with him too. Many of his staff have had the surgery, and that helps also. I'll have mine tomorrow and will let you know how it goes.
I found Dr. Jones to be very pleasant to visit with. I immediately felt comfortable talking to him about my questions and beginning the journey.
My impression has never waivered. He and his entire staff are so easy to talk to and work with. I really believe they all have my best interests in mind.
Dr. Jones visited my room each day I was in the hospital and was so friendly and genuinly concerned about my recovery. The after-care program that his office incorporates is built to ensure my success.
Dr. Jones and his staff explained the risks of the surgery to me on more than 1 occassion to be sure I completely understood everything prior to surgery.
I would rate Dr. Jones (and his staff) a 10+!
My first impression of my surgeon was a good one. I had asked around before I had chosen to have this procedure done, and he has a good solid reputation. To back that up, I have a current instructor who is a nurse and used to work in the quality review area of that hospital and speaks very highly of him, so I feel confident that I am in good hands. Dr. Jones and his staff are very knowledgeable and nice. They know what they are doing and know how to handle each step of the way. Very much into teaching. Aftercare has been very much emphasized with visits to the dietician and surgeon's office and is very structured with steps that I feel have been very helpful. Risks were discussed in as much detail as I needed. Post-op I am giving my surgeon an excellent rating, as I had complications and he and his staff brought me through with flying colors.
my first impression of tom jones was that he seemed like a nice guy who cares about his patients. i realized he was not only a nice guy but a great surgoen. his staff was very nice they made me feel comfortable with choosing surgury and they do the procedures laproscopically. i would tell other people even with the best surgeon recovery is going to be painful so get ready!
