I don't have any complaints about Dr. McMahon. I think he did a fine job. He is a very competent surgeon, atleast in my case. After the surgery you do not really have contact with him, just his PA. I do believe that the entire place is understaffed though. I think it must be hard to be attentive to all their patients and have found you have to be very thourough in following your own healthcare or you will fall thru the cracks.
Dr. McMahon impressed me from the very beginning of my contact with him. He is a doctor that genuinely cares for his patients and their success. He has great bedside manner and is an excellent surgeon making sure every possible precaution was taken with my surgery. I have NEVER had a problem gaining access to him unlike so many other surgeons that are out there today. His staff has been so wonderful, caring and prompt with answering any questions I have. Dr. McMahon visited me every day after my surgery while I was in the hospital. His staff took time to visit me as well. I can honestly say there was nothing about him that I didn't like. He took his time explaining every aspect of the surgery and aftercare that I would need. His insurance specialist Elizabeth was so helpful and made sure that I got the very lowest out of pocket expenses possible. She was so kind and considerate and got my surgery scheduled in the time frame that I needed so that my husband could be with me. I have my first follow-up (3 weeks) on 10/23 and I feel great - 20 pounds lighter and lots of energy. You can't go wrong with Dr. McMahon and his staff. It's so hard to find a surgeon that really cares. Believe me, I live in Oregon and drove to Seattle to have this surgery done because I could not find one Doctor here that even cared to take the time to speak to me and help me with getting this surgery done.
From the moment I met Dr. McMahon I knew I was in good hands. He was a wonderful, compassionate human being. He was very confident in his work and he explained everything to me from start to finish. There was never a time that I felt like this was the wrong decision. I would recommend him to anyone and everyone.
My first impression of Dr. McMahon was that he showed sincere care and concern for his patients. The office staff was caring and very polite and sensitive to others that were going through the process. I would sincerely recommend Dr. McMahon to others. The aftercare program lasts for about a year after your surgery and then will continue only if you choose to do so. Dr. McMahon exceeded the rating chart overall in surgical competence and bedside manner. Dr. McMahon did a grand job.
Dr. McMahon is a very easy going and easy to talk with surgeon, he took the time to explain everything to me so that I understood in depth what was going on. I was very impressed with the Doc after just the first meeting with him. then while I was in the hospital after surgery he came in several times to check on me and make sure that I was doing ok.. It makes it alot easier to deal with surgery when you feel comfortable with your doc.
As far as office staff they are helpful but at times can make you feel a bit stressful.
I felt belittled at times by staff. This is just my personal feelings on how at times I felt I was being treated. Yes they were a big help, but atimes I did get fustrated with different situations that I personally had to deal with. Maybe it was just me but that is the way I felt. All in all I can't speak for anyone else, just myself and it was not all staff just one that I dealt with a times. But, I took it with a grain of salt and keep on keeping on. I was interested in surgery and making myself medically feel better not making a life long friendship with this particular office person. I am making no statement about what other people may experience. I am sure we all have bad days here and there. I never felt uncomfortable at any point with any of the surgeons. They all seem to be very caring individuals who are looking out for your best interests.
Dr. McMahon and Dr. Grant both are excellent doctors, both of which did my RNY and if I had to do it all over again, in no way would I hesitate for either surgeon to preform the operation.
I can honestly say that I feel like a new person and am very fortunate to have meet these surgeons, I now again have a new life and it is wonderful. I feel great today, tomorrow and hopefully forever. I rate 100% to Duke WLS Surgeons.
I will be having my surgery at Duke WLS Center, where my surgeon could be either Dr. Grant, Dr. McMahon, or Dr. Pryor - and I would feel very comfortable with any one of them. At their info seminar I heard both Dr. McMahon and Dr. Pryor speak and I was very impressed with both of them. I spoke personally with Dr. McMahon afterwards and he was easy to talk to and happy to answer my specific questions.
Update: Found out that my surgeon will be Dr. McMahon! The medical and office staff at Duke WLS Center is phenomenal. The Nurse Practitioner, Hilary is very nice and really puts you at ease from the start. The insurance coordinator, Beth, is extremely helpful and works very hard for every single patient.
Update: I am now "post-op"... Dr. McMahon was wonderful in all areas. At my pre-op meeting he took over an hour to review everything about the surgery. He answered so many questions from everyone, and took his time and was very thorough. In the hospital I saw him quite often and he again took his time checking in on me and answering any questions I had. With Dr. McMahon you get an excellent surgeon and an easy-going, attentive doctor all in one.
Dr. McMahon IS the total package. I have had no complications at all and found him and all the Duke WLS Ctr staff wonderful. Dr. McMahon is a surgeon who is interested in his patient's total health and their 100%partisipation through the very structured Duke WLS program. He IS a very personally dedicated and skilled surgeon who is appropriately conservative with the patient’s best interest foremost in all his decisions. In addition, Dr. McMahon is good communicator, most personable and a sincere joy to be around. You can truly trust him and know that you are in excellent hands. You are going to hear many very good things about each of the Duke surgeons (don't forget Dr. O'Connell - one of my favorites for sure, Hilary Blackwood and Beth Milard also); in time you will also realize that all in the Duke WLS Ctr are world-class professionals and each are an important part of the group. However, I am very sincere when I tell you that if it is Dr. McMahon who is selected by the surgeon team to be your surgeon, you SHALL have a very, very good Doctor who you will completely trust, have total confidences in and will also like his kind, direct and open communications with you.
