Richard Boorse Bariatric Surgeon M.D.,F.A.C.S.
HE IS VERY SERIOUS AND RATHER QUIET. HE MADE ME FEEL IMPORTANT TO HIM. HE TOLD ME REALISTIC GOALS TO EXPECT. THOUROUGHLY WENT OVER THE DIET FOR AFTER SURGERY. HE HAS A SUPPORT GROUP THAT YOU CAN GO TO BEFORE SURGERY, AND A CLASS OF PRE OP INSTRUCTIONS, RUN BY A NURSE ON THE FLOOR THAT YOU WILL BE ON POST OP, WHO HAS HAD THE SURGERY. TO ME SURGICAL COMPETENCE IS BY FAR MORE IMPORTANT. I CAN LIVE WITH A GRUMP BUT NOT WITH AN INCOMPETENT SURGEON
First impression of Dr. Boorse very nice, Explained the procedure through a diagram what they would be doing. Why he prefers RNY and also I would be given prevenative measures to prevent blood clots. The day following you are taken back to the operating room to drink something and x-rayed to make sure there are no leaks. Plus follow up visits. I was given abook on the procedure and a diet that needs to be followed in steps from day one. He addressed the riks of the surgery, his bedside manner was "making me feel confortable."
The office were very friendly, plus they gave me a list of people (and their phone numbers to contact them) who had the surgery done by him.
I would rate my overall visit with him enjoyable and he put me very much at ease, because I was very nervous.
I am a surgical Technician that was working at LeHigh Valley Hospital, Cedar Crest Site and had the priviledge of scrubbing cases with Dr. Boorse. He is very knowledgable of laparoscopic procedures and is considered the "best" in our area. He has excellent sterile technique and always is pro-patient.
He is very professional, but feels like your friend at the same time.
His office is very efficient and you never have to wait more than ten minutes, appointments are on time. This has been my experience.
Bedside manner is great and he is very good to answer all questions you may have.
I would rate him a 10 in a scale of 1-10. I am fortunate to know his work on both sides of the table. He is a perfectionist and I would recommend him to anyone.
The only problem I had in the hospital was with my IV's. I am a hard stick anyway, and when my original IV infiltrated I eventually had to have a triple lumen catheter and because of previous anemia problems, 2 units of blood.
I read the comments on negativity, I don't have any, but everything I have written is my conviction and is true from my experience.
I met with Dr. Boorse on April 23, 2002. He seemed like a caring man and I for once I didn't feel embarassed to be a doctor's office because of my weight. I was very comfortable with him and he explained things to me and answered my questions. his staff was very caring and helpful. Barbara has been very nice to me and helpful with my insurance problems there. When i first called there was just no openeing for months, but she felt like she had to get me in and she did. I am very gratfull to her.
Favorable, he seemed friendly and genuinally concerned.
I have only met him once so far, so my opinion hasn't changed either way.
Very friendly and confidentiallity was a major concern of theirs.
His promptness at my schedule visit.
He instills confidence in his patients.
very much, he lets you know that surgery alone isn't the answer.
yes, very structure, they continue to keep track of your progress and any problems that might arise.
on a common sense level, all surguries have some type of risk, but he explains them to you and gives you lists of ways to learn all you can about them.
Too soon to give a detailed rating.
both are great, but i would prefer surgical competence if I had to pick only one.
I first meet Dr. Boorse 5 years ago when he did a biopsy on one of my breasts, which turned out negitive, phew! I always had great confidencein him all the way to his first hand shake with me.
Now since my Gastric Bypass I hold even a higher cofidennce and utmost respect for him than any Dr. I have ever met....he really saved my life!
The staff is ok, but I am not fond of his nurse too much, she seems to have a bad day everytime I am there. But I do not care about her.....just me, my surgeon Dr. Boorse and saving my life.
I least liked how long it takes to get an apt., but on the same note I am glad he is busy because that means he is making alot of people happy! Like they say....go to the busy restraunt, not the slow one!
Future patients should know that he is a well rounded surgeon.....caring, talented, and very patient.
Aftercare is very important and I get full support from Dr. Boorse.
Everything is very structured and thought out for my best well being.
He told me all the risks upfront, but to me I was a risk already from myself eating they way I do/did.
Overall.....PERFECT!
Better...well like I said he has it all, which is a rare thing in the medical field.
Dr Boorse is an easy going surgeon who is clearly a stand out in his field of laparoscopis surgery - he is the head of laparoscopic surgery at Lehigh Valley Hospital.
His office staff were courteous and helpful with my calls, never seemed annoyed.
He provided a very clear picture of what to expect post op, the anatomy of the surgery, etc.
I feel it is important to have a skilled surgeon that you feel comfortable enough with to ask any sort of question. You should feel safe and relaxed with the surgeon you entrust your life to.

I was generally pleased overall with Dr Boorse, with a few exceptions. First of all, I did NOT see him after my surgery until the morning of my discharge. Although the residents that did check in on me seemed more than competent and caring, I still would have felt better seeing Dr Boorse at least once or so DURING my stay, rather than only upon my exit.

Dr Boorse does not really have a structured aftercare program. I had my first post op visit two weeks after surgery and am scheduled for a two month post op visit.

I felt that post op diet info was somewhat lacking. I saw a hospital dietician the day before my discharge, and she gave me what was originally a VBG diet plan, which she amended with a LOT of her own notes. It all seemed really haphazard to me. To this day I wonder if she even knew I had Roux-en-y and not VBG. The food amounts she said I could start eating in the third and fourth week is WAY too much food!

I also feel I was NOT very well informed about a "bleed" that I sustained as a result of the surgery. I wound up needing a transfusion of two units of blood.

The office staff was friendly and helpful, save for the nurse who saw me in the examining room before Dr Boorse. She has an attitude!

I realized going in that this was not a "bariatric treatment center" with complete coordinated care. So overall, there were no major surprises or disappointments.

I would certainly recommend Dr Boorse to do this surgery. I have had no complications so far, other than the "bleed" which could happen to anyone. I feel that his surgical competence was outstanding, and would not hesitate to recommend him to someone seeking this surgery.
