Dr. Ravindra Mailapur and his staff are very caring about each and every patient. Their goal is complete success. The tool is provided then it is up to the patient how they choose to use that tool. My husband and I were very impressed with Dr. Mailapur from the very first time we spoke to him at his seminar. He and his staff are very gighly trained professionals and are there for you should you need them.
Since having my surgery I feel like a whole new person and with my support team in place (i.e Dr. Mailapur, family and friends) I feel very blessed. The doctor makes sure that ALL of your questions and concerns are addressed as well as the risks involved with this type of surgery. I feel very lucky in the fact that I have a doctor that is very strict in his aftercare program snd he is not afraid to let you know his likes and dislikes about how I am doing with the very structured program that must be followed to the letter in order to succeed. This is a life change for the rest of your life and must be accepted BEFORE the surgery.
In my final thoughts I would have to say that if I had it to do all over again I would not change my doctor or they program I have followed. I have complete competence in the way I have been treated both surgically as well his bedside manner. I have the best of both worlds ther and would highly reccommend Dr. Mailapur to anyone.
In closing I can only find one negative point about doctor and that is that I couldn't get him to call me by the name I go by. I am at this point in my treatment very happy with his program and all the support I have received. I know that each patient has their own concerns about their care. I am speaking for myself and my own personal care and feel very confident. I will be able to say more in 6-8 months as to my overall treatment.
From the time I attended Dr. Mailapur's seminar on weight loss surgery; I knew he was the surgeon that I wanted to perform my surgery. He has a very caring manner about him. He speaks both with confidence and also kindness and compassion. I had some questions about weight loss surgery and if it was right for me. After coming out of the seminar, I felt like all those questions were answered truthfully and to my satisfaction and that I was making the right choice to move forward with the surgery.
Dr. Mailapur also has in a place a wonderful support system. From his front desk receptionists to his nurse and also the nutritionist,(Mrs. Steakley) and as well the bariatric support group, and the nurse who helps lead that; all are top notch and very professional and caring and confident. Their knowledge and confidence has most greatly helped me through this process. And as far as Dr. Mailapur's skills as a surgeon, they speak for them self.
I am so glad that I decided to have this surgery and am very thankful to Dr. Mailapur and his staff for helping to prepare and support me in this life changing journey.
I started my journey in weight loss about one year ago by attending Dr. Mailapur's seminar. Dr. Mailapur was very honest and informative at the seminar. During my first consult with Dr. Mailapur, he was very honest in telling me he would rather perform the RNY rather than the lap band. I was very persistant in wanting the lap band and thats what I had done. He really urges you to attend the support group meetings. I would recommend Dr. Mailapur to anyone thinking about having weight loss surgery.
My first impression of the Dr Mailapur was excitement and questions. He was giving a talk (that he does 2 times a month) and he was very blunt about what to expect from the surgery and how long it would take to get approved for surgery. He took time to answer all questions if he could. He could not answer all my questions that night because of my problems with iron and it was something he had not delt with.
His staff was very helpful to him and the persons at the talk. They helped people with their surveys and insurance questions.
At the first office visit when discussed the type of surgery I was to have we found the bypass would not be for me because I can't take iron. I am allergic to it and most metal. We talked the gastric sleeve as an option and wondered if I could handel the staples if we did this surgery. Dr Mailapur called the company rep for the staples and I did a trial of wearing the metal for a week to see if the metal had an adverse reaction to me or I to it. We could do it.
When I cam in for my next visit for some test Dr Mailapur was not in and I had a lot of questions. Even though the staff answered my questions that day, Dr Mailapur called me that night and talked with me about my questions. He assured me I did not have to do this and it was ok if I didn't want surgery.
My last visit before surgery we talked again about the gastric sleeve and the fact this was his first sleeve surgery. I asked him if he was confident. He said yes, He asked me the same thing and I said yes.
May 24th 2010 I chedked into Huntsville Hospital to have the first gastric sleeve prefromed in that hospital.
I woke up vomiting. I kept throwing up and Dr mailapur came back to the hospital at 10pm that night. He changed my meds and was back befor 7am changing my meds again. The 2nd change worked. I was on the road to recovery. The nurses told me he called often to check on me. His support group leader Eddie visits all of Dr Mailapur paitences while in the hospital and invites them to the meetings.
The recovery has been good. Dr Mailapur stresses it is best for recovery if you go to support meetings and the diet counsler before and after surgery. They don't always agree on the diet but some times I think trial and error on your part works best anyway. He stresses you keep your family Dr invoulved durring the recovery. He talked with my Dr every day I was in the hospital and let him know how I was doing. My family doctor, Dr Gunn, was very impressed with this and happy to have the communication.
Dr Mailapur never miss led me about the surgery and it's risks. He told me I may not lose weight or could die from the surgery.
On my last visit he told me I was losing at the rate of the bypass surgery. He admited he was not sure how much I would have lost but was happy to see the results of the sleeve. The sleeve is still kinda a trial and not approved by most insurance but from most things I have found the weight loss runs about the same as the bypass. I feel my experience with Dr Mailapur was a great experience. This is just my personl impression and experience and in no way means everyone will have the same result or experience I have been blesssed to have.
I have found I do not have a blood pressure problem any more, I feel great! Off all meds to include blood pressure, water pills, potassium, to name a few. All I take now is vitimans, (no metal included) and calisum.
I have lost 64lbs since April 17th (52 since surgery on May 24th). I don't wear the W's (woman sizes) any more. Just LADIES.
DR. MAILAPUR IS VERY CONCERNED ABOUT HIS PATIENTS. IF YOU HAVE PROBLEMS HE WANTS YOU TO CALL AND LET HIM KNOW WHAT IS GOING ON.
IF HE HAS A CONCERN ABOUT YOUR CONDITION HE WILL SENT YOU TO ANOTHER DOCTOR TO HAVE YOU CHECKED OUT. HIS OFFICE PERSONS ALSO CARE FOR YOU. THEY WILL GO OUT OF THEIR WAY TO GET YOU SET UP TO SEE THEIR DOCTOR AND ANY OTHER DOCTORS THAT YOU ARE SENT TO.
ALSO, DR. MAILAPUR ENCOURGES YOU TO ATTEND THE BARIATIC GROUP MEETINGS SO THAT YOU CAN GET ANY NEEDED SUPPORT FROM THE DIETICIANS AND HIS SUPPORT GROUP NURSE.
I have had a great experience with Dr. Mailapur and his staff. Getting insurance to pay was difficult but the staff kept me focused and were supportive so I did not give up. Dr. Mailapur kept me well informed about all aspects of the surgery and was a true dedicated professional. This surgery is truly life altering, and one needs a surgeon who is more than just a surgeon. It requires a team effort with both pre op and post op care. I had access to dieticians, RN's and other support personnel. Dr. Mailapur does everything to limit patient risk and make his patients proud of their choices. I recommend that anyone in this area considering the surgery get in touch with Dr. Mailapur. He can guide you through the process and calm your fears. I have recovered well from my surgery and look foreard to aa new life.
I hadn't really told anyone I was thinking of having surgery until I went to Dr Mailapur's seminar with a friend of mine. I had already known Dr Mailapur for 3 years and he was surprised that I had never mentioned having surgery. I had been watching his work and knew that he was a very good surgeon who cares about his patients and their surgery experience. I was very happy with the way he introduced the surgery and that he provided all the information that you could possibly need to make an informed decision. He is very thorough when it cames to doing everything possible to help prevent his patients from having blood clots. For that I am very grateful. You know that he cares about you not only as a patient but as a person. His surgical competence and bedside manner are both exceptional. I don't feel that anyone could go wrong in choosing him as their surgeon!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Update: 3 1/2 years out and still doing great.
My first impression of Dr. Mailapur is that he cares about his patients & gives a very informative seminar. I liked the fact that he stayed around after the seminar to meet with you (if you wanted) & answer anymore questions that you might have. On my first visit he answered more questions & he did not seem to mind at all. I did not feel like he was rushing with me to get to the next patient. He told me all appt. I would have to have with different DR. & about all test & that this is a life change not a just a diet. When he was finished with his talk he ask me once again did I have anymore questions. I felt that he was very interested in what I was asking & that all my questions were important.HIS office staff is very nice & helpful, I would always talk to Jessica she is/always very nice about my questions(I have been full of them). As I started getting closer to giving everything to my insurance she has made sure all paper work has been in order. So I'm sure that is why I received a date within a few days of them getting my papers. So far I would recommened Dr. Mailapur & his office staff to anyone. I think that surgical competence is by far more important than bedside manner, but a a great bedside manner is always a big plus, & Dr. Mailapur has a great bedside manner. I had my surgery on 7-12-2010, I met Dr. Mailapur in the hall before I got a room & he still wanted to know if I had more questions & that he would take good care of me, because I was a bit nervious. He then give me a big hug & told me I would be fine. I have also been to my follow up visit he was just as informative as he was the first time I met him. He told me he had given me the tool now it was up to me to use it to my advantage. He told me things I could & could not eat. At the end of my visit he said if I had questions to just call(& I have) Then gave me a big hug , he then shook hands with my husband said I was doing great & we were on our way. I would tell anyone that Dr. Mailapur is the Dr./surgeon to go to I have had no problems & I'm doing great. I know I picked the best Dr. in my area to go to & I'm very happy I found him. There is nothing negative to say about Dr. Mailapur or his staff, they are all wonderful.
I LOVE DR.Mailapur, he is the best. I will be A year out in SEPT 2010. I have lost 123 pounds, 17 pounds from goal. The office staff was very good, alway's took time to talk to you, and keep you up to date.DR. Mailapur's bedside manner's are TOP NOTCH,I ran into him at the geo store, and we both did the High Five, I dont think he ever forget's a face,, really!!!! His biggest thing to say to you is IT'S A TOOL USE IT.I would give him A 10 out of 10. he's just that GREAT... THANK YOU DR.MAILAPUR FOR MY TOOL.... SEE YA AT THE CHRISTMAS PARTY Sandra Denby
My first impression was that Dr. Mailapur is a very busy surgeon and typical of all the surgeons that I've met in the past. I changed my mind about the "typical" when he gave me a "big old hug" and told me that he was going to take care of me. I don't believe that a doctor has ever attempted to make me feel that he cares before. At least, not in such a "human" manner. Dr. Mailapur's office staff is very caring and they convey a feeling of reassurance to the clients.
Future patients should know that when Dr. M says that you must lose weight before he will do surgery, he means it! It is not a control issue, he requires the weight loss to increase your chances of a successful surgery. Dr. M. is very concerned that you follow all of the guidelines: dietary and exercise. He states that he wants to be successful with all his surgeries and that he does not consider the surgery a success unless the patient benefits. Aftercare is emphasized and made simple by the Huntsville Hospital Bariatric Center. The Nurse, the Dietician and all the volunteers are there to help any time you call or email. Support Group meetings held once a month are great! Dr. M. addressed the risk of surgery both during our pre-surgery visit and in the enormous amount of study material that his office provided. You must read the study material or you will not pass the little test that you must "pass" prior to surgery. I rate Dr. M very highly. I have confidence in his surgical skills, he studied at one of the best Colleges of Surgeons in the world. I think that his bedside manner and his surgical competence are equally great!
