I met Dr. Guske about a month before my surgery. I thought he was fantastic from the moment I met him. He explained everything in detail. Realistic expectations from surgery, risks and benefits. The office people are very helpful and they care about the patient. I have never had a better experience with a doctor or his staff. There is a structured aftercare program through the Weight For Life group which Dr. Guske belongs to. Dr. Guske cares about his patients, he has a great bedside manner, he is a fantastic surgeon and I would highly recommend him to anyone seeking this surgery.
11/12/2001 - Dr. Guske has been GREAT! He is committed to my long term care. I have had several post-op appointments with him and he has been very good about sharing information with my Primary Care Provider. If I have to have any additional surgery due to hanging skin, etc, He'll be my choice again even though he is three hours away!
05/2001 My surgeon is Dr. Paul Guske. He is one of the four surgeons in Dr. Kane's office. Dr. Kane Sr. will assist.
I really liked Dr. Guske. My mom and I met him today for the first time. He was very straight forward and took time to answer all of our questions.
I am thrilled with my choice. Dr. Guske is very caring and he and the other doctors work together. There are four doctors (Dr. Kane Sr, Dr. Kane Jr, Dr. Rantis and Dr. Guske) in the office. In the hospital Dr. Kane Sr. checked on me most days, with Dr Rantis coming in one day. I was a little disappointed that I did not see Dr. Guske in the hospital after the surgery, but Dr. Rantis and Dr. Kane Sr, were great.
The emphasis on aftercare is very high. There is a support group that meets for Weight for Life every two weeks. The doctor has stated that aftercare is crutial to success.
Dr. Guske went over all the risks of having the surgery. I agreed that the risks of NOT having the surgery outweighed having it.
I would rate Dr. Guske very high. I really like and trust him, and would select him again in a heartbeat.
Both his bedside manner and surgical competence are outstanding!
met with Dr. Guske on 5/18/01. When he first walked into the room, I
thought he was a young guy that knew what he was doing. He has great
partners that he works with. He told me about his family and how long
he had been doing this type of surgery. He explained all of the
complications and even answered questions that I had prepared for
him. He really made me feel that I was in good hands.
4/19/01: I went to Dr. Kane's seminar on 4/14 and thought it was very informative. I recommend this seminar to anyone who is wondering about where to start. You have to schedule thru Weight for Life. I met Ginny from WFL at the seminar. I've emailed Ginny once already and she got back to me within an hour! Dr. Rantis presented the seminar and Dr. Kane Sr spoke also. Both impressed me. What most impresses me is that they seem ultra-conservative. I was at a group one day and people were complaining about all the "extra" things Dr. Kane's group requires: Pulmonologist consult, psych consult, attending support group. These things show me how careful they are and how much they try to cover all the bases. They are very concerned about blood clots after surgery and have a strong approach to prevention.
He is very down to earth, explains things clearly, and seems to love what he is doing. He has a sense of humor and is ready to answer questions with complete responses. The office staff were nothing more than wonderful. At one point my 2 1/2 year old son ran out of the exam room while I was talking with Dr. Guske and Olga played with him and kept him occupied. They all seem like very professional and kind people.
I've only seen him once so far, but Dr. Guske seems very caring. He didn't rush me. He told me, without the signs of arrogance so often seen in medical professionals, that it's very rewarding for him as a surgeon to be able to make such a big difference in his patients' lives--in many cases giving them 15-25 extra years of life!
He probably could have been more proactive in informing me of the nitty-gritty details about the surgery, because I didn't know the questions to ask at the time. Just make sure you go in with your list of questions, and I know he'd be happy to answer them all.
I have to be honest and say that I was disapponted that I was not able to see Dr. Kane. However, after meeting and talking to Dr. Guske I was impressed and at ease.
The office staff was nice and the time he took with me was wonderful. Even after I asked my 5 billion questions, he still had more information to tell me. He took the time to listen and explain and that is what I liked!
I have my surgery date scheduled for August 10th. I can't wait to see him again!
As for the Weight for Life Office - I was put off a little. There were a few calls I made where they were a little rude. But I was approved and I am done working with them.
