Dr. Guske performed my RNY Gastric Bypass in September 2001. My experience with him was very positive and I had a speedy, trouble free recovery. I saw him several times for follow up during my first year after surgery, and then again at my two year surgery anniversary. Since that time, I have switched family physicians several times and the information his office provided to my original family physician regarding follow up monitoring has been lost. I have emailed, called and written to Dr. Guske's office asking for information to be sent to my new family physician - but his staff hasn't sent the information. I live 2 1/2 hours from Dr. Guske's office, so I can't just pop in and make a nuisance of myself until his staff gives me a copy of the recommended blood tests and any other important follow up information. My situation is further complicated by the fact that I developed anemia due to malabsorpion when I was about five years out. My family physician isn't familiar with the recommended blood tests, and it would be ever so helpful if Dr. Guske's office would send her the list of tests. My caution to all current and potential patients of this practice would be to assure you have everything you're going to need in YOUR possession at the two year anniversary of your surgery, because once that date passes, there is no follow up or assistance available from the Kane Center staff.
I have nothing but good things to say about Dr. Guske. He was my lap-band surgeon and I am a little over a year post-op. Dr. Guske answered all of my questions and did not try to minimize the risks of surgery and he never \"talked down\" to me. My impression is that he is knowledgable, competent, and genuine. Every visit with him is thorough, he does not try to \"rush\" you in & out of the exam room. He always takes time to answer all of my numerous questions and does so with an interested and caring attitude. My personal experience is that Dr. Guske demonstrated to me that he is invested in his patients' total health and welfare (i.e., making sure my other health issues are being treated and they are improving as well as remembering my family). My impression of him is that he treats me like a complete person instead of just a surgery patient as can be so common in western medicine. I have met with other bariatric surgeons before and have not had a good experience. One gave me incorrect information about erosion and another showed a demeaning attitude towards potential surgery patients in a seminar when addressing their questions. My opinion of the Dr/Patient relationhip with Dr. Guske is it has the small-town warmth with the big-city experience. He does not stop being your doctor after the surgery is done. He is with you for the long-term and shows a sincere caring for his patients' needs. With me, Dr. Guske emphasized the importance of after-care in long-term success and I think it has really helped for me. My comorbidities of hypertension and borderline diabetes have resolved themselves. And before my surgery, I was a size 18 to 20. Now, I'm a size 0 or 2, depending on the brand! I am healthy and active again and finally feel pretty again too. THANK YOU for helping me reach all of my goals Dr. Guske!
*from the 1st time I met Dr Guske @ the seminar I liked him. He seemed so knowledgeable but at no time did I fell like he was giving the upside without the downside. I appreciated thatrn*my impression of him didn't changern*his office staff was very helpful throughout the entire processrn*there was honestly nothing I disliked about himrn*future patients should know they are selecting the greatest surgeon on the planet!!rn*they encourage you to call with ANY questions you have and they have seminars (haven't attended 1 yet)rn*I feel all the risks were explained to me but for me the benefits outweighed (pun intended :-) the riskrn*scale of 1-10? 20!!rn*I think surgical competence and bedside manner are BOTH importantrnI honestly had a great experience with Dr Guske and his staff
From the first time I met him I knew Dr. Guske was the right surgeon for me. I was terrified of the surgery as much as I knew it was the right thing. He talked to me for a long time, answered all my questions and while being honest about the risks took away my doubts. I felt very safe that he would do everything to assure my well-being. When I went for my pre-op visit I was excited but still very scared. Dr. Guske made me feel more at ease and we talked a bit about the \"what if\" factors and he assured me they would move my anatomy around very gently, they would take the best of care me and that I was making the absolute right decision. The day of the surgery I was beyond terrified and he was so kind and compassionate to the fact I was so afraid. After the surgery, he came to see me and talked to me and I felt assured that everything was going to be fine miserable as I felt. I rate Dr. Guske the absolute best. He is kind, compassionate, and truly cares about his patients. He told me that he loves what he does and enjoys it and I believe him. The program at the Kane Center/Suburban Surgical is excellent from pre-surgery protocol thru support/nutritional guidance. I am looking forward to becoming a part of the post-bariatric support groups. I think Dr. Guske has it all - he's a great surgeon, he's a kind and compassionate human being and he understands the emotional side of this surgery is a big change and also a frightening one. He has gone out of his way to help me and I am so grateful. I don't know that I would have done this had he not been the one who talked with me about my fears. I put my absolute trust in him to hold my life literally in his hands. I have no regrets and feel great about the decision to have him as my surgeon, to use the Kane Center and Alexian Brothers. I would recommend him and the program to anybody. Dr. Guske is an excellent surgeon as well as a wonderful human being.
