Don't know what to say about Dr. Anez.
Well, here goes, my opinions and observations follow:
My first visit was very informative, but much of the info I had already researched. Great info if you have done nothing on your own. Answered all the questions I had. He is cordial enough - somewhat aloof and professional, but not unpleasant.
Did NOT tell me about having an assistant surgeon during surgery which may be an insurance issue for some. Saw them both every day I was in the hospital - very friendly and professional.
I would recommend him.
Have spent most of my time with his staff.
They are great. It is even better since he got a new scale.
My first impression of Dr. Anez was that he was a caring and personable doctor. I was especially impressed by his waiting room chairs (and chairs in the offices) which were tasteful and large enough to fit my hips with space, Dr. Anez designed them himself. All of the staff in his office is pleasant and supportive. Everyone follows through on their part of the process. Gabe, Tina, Maria, and Linda(the nutritionist) are super to work with. I would recommend Dr. Anez and his team to anyone looking into having gastric bypass.
The only negative I can think of is that Dr.Anez does not perform lapriscopic RNY, but he does perform a mini-cut. Mine measured just under 4" two days after surgery. I am glad I went this route instead of lap. Preop was much less stressful and with Linda's nutrition program, post-op is much easier to understand and much more livable for "real life".
Dr Anez seemed very quite at first but he explained the procedure to I knew he was experienced. His staff are friendly and organized. I hospital staff respect Dr Anez also. Dr Anez provides his patients with the most updated care and was concerned about blood clots while in the hospital. Nurses and assitants would check blood sugar, blood pressure, temp., and even oxyen levels constantly. Dr Anez is an excellent surgeon and he's very concerned about his patients care.
It is evident from the beginning to the end that Dr. Anez and his staff enjoy what they are doing, and do it very well. The first thing that impressed me, and I had read about it on this site, was the chairs in the waiting room. It always irked me that doctor's offices always had chairs that would only be comfortable for the "normal" body. Dr. Anez's chairs are oversized, and that just exemplifies his care for detail. He has a great team, and the whole process was easier than I ever dared to imagine. I did have a little problem with the fact that the nutritionist insisted on being paid in cash. I thought that to be unprofessional, and rubbed me the wrong way. But that was a minor inconvenience in the whole scope of things. The nutritionist was excellent, and definitely worth the money paid. It was just insulting and demeaning to be required to bring cash up front.
CONSULTATION -
I got in to see the doctor after an hour of waiting. I could tell he was very busy because the waiting room was "standing room only"! Dr. Anez seems nice and has a wry/dry sense of humor. He used colored pencils to show where the food goes and where the different "juices" mix with it. He sufficiently answered the 20 detailed questions I asked. He comes highly recommended by my PCP who, in my opinion, is the best doctor ever.
POST-OP 11/19/03 -
Dr. Anez is an extremely gifted surgeon with many years of experience. I highly recommend him to anyone who is in need of an expert in bariatric surgery.
I was only in the hospital for 2 days. My scar is very, very small and I had an open surgery. He gave me the heparin shots to prevent blood clots (check into that to make sure your surgeon does that, it is very important). I was walking on the same day. I was also given a detailed diet and excercise plan. He has an excellent Physician Assistant- Maria. I have seen her more than him; she's the best. She has also had the surgery and usually takes care of his follow-up appointments. The rest of his office staff are extremely polite and efficient, also very important.
Pre-ops - the key is to know how to talk to people professionally, and with respect. If you go to any gastric bypass surgeons office flipping out on everyone about your insurance approval or whatever, they could decide not to perform surgery at all based solely on their opinion on your mental status! lol(just something to think about)
