I was very meticulous in my research for this surgery. For a year I interviews with former patients of numerous doctors in the Richmond, Va area. I spoke with other doctors and health professionals for recommendations. And I research on the internet. I concluded that Dr. Neil Hutcher was the Doctor that satisfied my stringent criteria. Dr Hutcher....
1) is top in his field
2) has the highest surgical success with a minimum of complications
3) has the high long term average weight loss percentage per patient.
4) has proven to be caring to the special needs of his patients and is upfront with the risks of this surgery.
5. has an pre and post op educational program to prepare the patient for the necessary nutritional, psychological and physical adjustments.
After my first consult with him I knew I had made the right decision, I had a doctor which inspired in me the utmost confidence. He even let me put on my earphones and listen to nature sounds while I was being prepped for surgery. My hospital stay was so much brighter with his visits, he was always very excited to see me and his other patients.
After I got out of the hospital I have had only the good experiences with the after care I have received from his very competent staff. The only regret I have is not being able to see Dr. Hutcher after I left the hospital. I somehow feel a little cheated, but I it is conforting to know he is saving somebody else's life with that time. He has given me with his expertise...a new life with absolutely no major complications.
I use to work for my surgeon performing this surgery on other patients, so I knew what type of doctor he was and what his results were like. Dr. Hutcher changed my life and I will be forever grateful. He gave me the needed boost to go ahead and do things I had always wanted to do in life but let the weight stop me. Even though I am no longer in Virginia, Dr. Hutcher and I still keep in touch, and whenever I go home I can always go by and let him know how well I am still doing.
Dr Hutcher was straight foward with me and I appreciated that. The office staff were very helpful.I would like to see Dr hutcher more often in the office but I know he is busy. He did great work. After care is done often as every 2 weeks. Support groups are offered.
Both competence and bed side manner were good. overall Dr Hutcher is a very good doctor!
Dr. Hutcher does a wonderful job with the surgery. He is so very committed to his patients and the procedure.
His staff is delightful and very helpful. Barbara, his assistant, is always available and returns calls quickly.
Aftercare is limited to routine post surgical follow up visits.
All of my concerns and questions were addressed and answered.
I give Dr. Hutcher and his staff the highest rating possible.
My first impression of Dr. Hutcher was one of true competence and knowledge of the obese person. He is a very compassionate man and truly cares about his patients and their well-being. He describes everything about the surgery and its risks involved. His staff is just as caring as he is and are always just a phone call away. We go through a series of courses before our surgery to inform us of whats going to happen before, during and after the surgery. We also have a manual given to us so that we can refer back to that if we have some questions. Home care is gone over at great length and the nurses at the hospital are there to see that you get a start on them before you leave. Excellent instructions are given to you along with a list of vitamins and other medications for use at home. To me there is no finer Dr. than Dr. Hutcher. His bedside manner and surgical competence are both outstanding and I am so thankful to a friend of mine for referring me to him. There is actually life beyond food and my fat. THANK YOU DR. HUTCHER FOR HELPING ME TO CHANGE MY LIFESTYLE!
I was referred to Dr. Hutcher by a physician in Lynchburg, VA. When I was sent a video tape about the gastric bypass and saw him for the first time on that video, I thought... "This man doesn't know a thing about what it means to be fat. He is probably a good doctor but he has never walked a day in my shoes." Well... once again I have to say, I could not have been more wrong.
When I met this man, I really didn't have to even talk. He knew me inside-out. He was so understanding and most compassionate. He kept me focusing on what can lie ahead for me. I have spent alot of time in psychiatrists offices and have never left with the attitude I did from Dr. Hutcher. I wanted to move forward and stop worrying about the past.
His staff seems very efficient. Whenever I have called asking for something, I usually have it in the next day's mail
I am told by others that Dr. Hutcher's plan is to be with you from pre-op to every last pound lost and then beyond. Meetings are available every month that anyone can attend from any stage: CONSIDERING SURGERY to BEYOND POST-OP. I like the idea that he will never release you from his care... I want someone to follow up.
He asked me if I was aware of the risks and I told him I had read that this surgery had a morbidity rate that was less than 1%. He said that that was correct, but that if you are that less than 1%, then that would be 100% for you. You know that sounds funny for a doctor to say but it cheered me up and I told him... I am not really living now anyway.
I believe that bedside manner or office demeanor is important, but I want a doctor with experience and knowledge, someone who is devoted to the field he or she practices; I believe Dr. Neil Hutcher to be such a man.
