My first impression of Dr Kalan was he was very polite attractive man with a beautiful accent. He was very up front and let me know what risks I was facing. He was very caring both before and after my surgery. He took extra special care of me because of my stage four liver disease. He is a 10 in my eyes. I could not thank him enough for what he has done for me. There is nothing I could recommend to improve the care I recieved from him. I was denied this surgery by Dr Leo Davidson in Fayetteville, NC my home town due to my liver problems. Dr. Davidson opened me up did a biopsy and then told me to go home. He did not offer any advice other than to lose weight on my own. I had to seek care else where.

1. Extremely caring and concerned. 2. Only for the better. 3. First class. 4. No dislikes at all. 5. Dr. Kalan is a very kind and caring man. In my book you won't find anyone any better. 6. Extremely. He provides you with the tool for weightloss, but you provide the actual determination and absolute miracle by sticking to your program and following your specific dietary limitations. 7. He provides you with the knowledge you need and the follow-up care. Your sucess is up to you. 8. He is a very plain talking Dr. You will understand what he means. He is very willing to take all of the time necessary to help you and to make sure that you fully understand everything completely. 9.I truly believe there is no better Dr. on earth for this surgery. God Bless Dr. Kalan!!! 10. Both...definately both! Of course this is only my opinion. I am sure others may not have had as good of an experience as I have had.

Like others have said, Dr. Kalan is right to the point. In your initial visit, he spends about 5 mins with you. And the you talk to Sharon to get more info on what they need. Really, I don't blame him, half the people that come to him never get approved.....After surgery Dr. Kalan came to see me everyday to see how I was. I could ask him anything and he answered me honestly. It seems his practice of "aftercare" is a little different from other Doctors, so make sure you talk with him about what he expects the first couple weeks. Overall, I like Dr. Kalan and feel completely safe with him. If I didn't, I would have never allowed him to open me!

Dr. Kalan was very informative and treated me with respect. I still respect him. His staff was nice and helpful. I wish he had made my surgery a little more malabsorbtion. When I had my surgery there was not very much support, and if there was no one told me about it. I have been on my own since the surgery. I am getting ready to see a surgeon this month (1/04) to have a hernia repaired, and to have the excess skin removed from the front of me. I have had many struggles, I lost 60 lbs and I have gained back 15 lbs. I'm starting my exercise program again, and etaing mostly proteins, definitely staying away from carbs. I was not told these things for the first 3 months after the surgery, I would do the surgery again, if I had to, and I'd love to have it revised in some way. I have not lost weight rapidly like others have. I'm happy I had the surgery, but sad that it has not gone as well as I had hoped. Dr. Kalan said that if I did exactly as he said it would work for me, he really did not tell me what to do, the dietician that he gave me the name of was out of the country the whole time. I wish I could say better things, but I can't. If Dr. Kalan would like to talk to me I'd be available.

I have had my initial consult with Dr. Kalan, he is very understanding, he treats you as if you have a medical problem and not like there's something wrong with you. As someone else has said before, He is very busy, and you can tell, but he does care and will answer any question you have and will not make you feel like your wasting his time if you do have a few questions for him. Just know what you want to ask before you see him, he appreciates your preparation and use of his time and he reciprocates yours. His staff, the two that i have met so far are very nice. After my consult the secretary told me she would submit the paperwork to my insurance and it would probably take 2-3 weeks for a decision. I did call her the monday after the third week and she said I had been approved! She said she would have to call me back to set the date and it would be in October. That was 3 days ago, and she hasnt got back to me. To her im sure this is a very normal time frame for the progression of things, but to me, it feels like an eternity!!! I will call her on friday if she doesnt call me tomorrow.

I had my initial eval with Dr. Kalan late March. He was very informative and answered my questions. He seemed a little rushed. He asked me if I had questions and I began and after about 2 referred me to his secretary Irene. She was able to answer my questions but I was a little put off at first when asked if I had questions then referring me to another person. Office seemed very busy. Staff all though very friendly. My main concern is they offer almost no post op or pre op support through Georgetown. Have no working relationship w/nutrition etc. Nutrition staff at Georgetown only see you inpt no outpt counseling. Basically after post op visit you are turned over to PCM for follow up. He only does the open RNY. He stated this was due to his feelings of increased risk with lap. He does other surgeries lap but advocates open for RNY due to increased chance of complications. He makes a good argument but so do lap MD's. He is assistant professor of Surgery at Georgetown and comes highly qualified. Irene his secretary is also readily available and returns calls promptly. My main concern at this point is need for a more structured pre/post op follow up in structured program vs feeling of on your own to get adequate follow up.These are just personal impressions based on my experience and am making no statement about what others experiences may be.

I meet with Dr. Kalan on November 11th of 2002. I have been working to get all the things he has asked of me. Phyc consult and I have already meet with the nutrinist. My insurance had approved the first visit but is now saying Obesity is not a covered diagnosis. We are fighting with them. Irene has been helping us figure it out. I was really impressed with Dr. Kalan. I was comfortable and he answered everything I asked. He seems to have a good out coming with his patients. He also stressed the risks of surgury, but I have been doing so much research that I knew most of the answers anyway.

My initial visit with Dr Kalan went as i thought it would. I had been doing my homework so our consultation mainly consisted of process and precedures. He was very personable, told me he thought I was a godd candidate for the surgery due to my other medical conditions. He passed me on to Irene, his ass't who was and is very helpful. i never felt rushed or uncomfortable with either of them. My papers are being submitted now( first week of March 2003)so I will report on that step later.
he did say my pcp would handle most of my aftercare. Since almost all my docs are at Georgetown, that is fine with me.
presurgery rating, 9 imho
