I was immediately impressed with Dr. Kirkland at the first group meeting and he alleviated many of my fears. I actually did not have much personal contact with him as I was approved quickly and my surgery was scheduled fairly quick. I met with Kim in his office before and after surgery and saw the doctor each day in the hospital. I suppose his reputation preceeded him and I was quite content with the job he did and his expertice made my end of the deal that much easier. Hopefully I won't need to have much contact with him as I have had not one complication. Dr. Kirkland's staff hold a monthly support group meeting and we can contact the office staff at any time and they are all very helpful. We have a nutritionist who is avaiable with all stupid and serious questions and I give all his staff an A+.
Dr. Kirkland only does Open RNY surgery. I recovered quickly and was back to work 9 days after my surgery. I believe the key to a fast recovery is to get off the pain medicaiton as soon as you can.
My first impression of Dr. Kirkland was: WHAT A CUTIE! I chose Dr. Kirkland initially because he specializes in other GI surgerical procedures and because I've had many abdominal surgeries, felt he was the one for me. I had my initial consult with 6 other patients, which surprised me a bit. Three days after my consultation, I received a call from his office with an approval from my insurance! I was ecstatic, as I was expecting this to be one of my first major hurdles. His staff is very friendly and accessible when needed. I was very confident with Dr. Kirkland doing the surgery and now that I am 3 and a half weeks post-op am glad he is my doctor. In addition to the GB, he removed adhesions (left from previous surgery). He is a kind person and has good bedside manner. You can tell thet he really cares about his patients.
he is very nice, knowledgable about wls. his office staff is always nice to me but a little standoffish. i didn't see him after surgery at all- he told my husband i was fine and that was it. aftercare is very important.he was very honest with everything all info upfront. overall he is about an 8 my surgery was uneventful and my incision looks great. i prefer surgical competence overall-in the end i am not starting a personal relationship w/him i want him to be the best surgeon.
Very knowledgeable and had the best small hands on such a talented man. I have a very high opinion of him. His staff well that is another story... I was a little irritated with staff on my two week follow up appointment. He was running late and they wanted to just see me and move me out. I did not appreciate that. I did not see him much in the hospital not like that is a problem. He does emphasize aftercare with the nutritionist since that is where most of our aftercare has to happen. They make you go to two support groups prior to surgery which I thought was a very good idea. He addressed all the risks of the surgery and well I was happy that there were no surprises. He is a real cutie too...what blue eyes! I rate him a 9. 10 is perfect but no one is perfect.
I met with Dr. Kirkland in October 2004. He was softspoken, very direct, but gentle. He assured us all (group meeting) that his success rate is even higher than the average. He took lots of time to answer all our questions. His staff has been outstanding in helping and answering any questions we have. My wife sat in with me during the orientation and was so impressed with Dr. Kirkland that she decided to schedule herself as well. She's also approved and will have her surgery March 28.
I would be remiss if I didn't mention Cindy Naus by name. She coordinates his bariatric surgery dept and is fantastic! Very compassionate while I suffered through my postponements, wonderful humor, patient and thorough explanations. She's a doll and has made this a much easier experience!
My first impression of Dr Kirkland was very positive. He came across with a sense of concern about everyone who attended the first consult. He described his experience, how he would do the surgery and why does the open bypass. He left me with nothing to question. There is nothing about him that made me question his ability to perform the surgery. As a matter of fact, I had a consult with another doctor and I changed my doctor to Dr Kirkland. Dr Kirkland did review that positives and the negatives regarding the surgery. I would rate this doctor high up on the scale and I do mean hight. His overalll manner was impressive. I found that his surgical competence and beside manner was great. The only negative aspect was dealing with the receptionist. Otherwise, the visit was fine.
Unfortunately, during our initial appointment, Dr. Kirkland had an emergency surgery(he is a GI surgeon who does a ton of wls'). His office staff was excellent, though. Cindy Naus, CRNP (nurse coordinator)
is excellent and informative and very, very helpful. The nutrition and support classes are also very good. The program offers post-op classes in nutrition, a 6month out psychological group for dealing with the new you as well as 1 on 1 therapy options and a reconstructive surgeon for those of us who need her. And, Dr. Kirkland has a .25% mortality rate. And both of those patients(which consitute the .25%) were super, morbidly obese patients(>500lbs) with a laundry list of co-morbidities. I couldn't think of a practice I would rather be with then Dr. Kirkland and Associates.
Dr Kirkland is very knowledgable about the proceedure and made me feel very comfortable. My impression of Dr Kirkland has not changed. His office staff is very professional and pleasant. Dr Kirkland was voted a "Top Doc" by Philadelphia Magazine. Dr. Kirkland recommends attending the hospital suypport group and therapy if possible. He explained all of the risks and how they can be lowered by patients actions. I think he's an excellent surgeon and so far he's been great.
I liked him, and I still do. His office staff was very helpful. He is a very busy surgeon, and does many other surgeries. He does not offer pre or aftercare. I would advise an online group. I believe he is an excellant surgeon but more knowledge of the surgery and aftercare should be sought elsewhere.
