Lawrence Schrock Bariatric Surgeon M.D.
My first impression was that he had a dry personality. I even thought about changing doctors but decided that I didn't have to be buddies with my mechanic to have him fix my car so why should I have to have a warm and fuzzy relationship with my surgeon if he was qualified to do the job. I was also irritated the first visit because the lady who was working the front desk did not have any customer service skills so that put me in the crappy mood I was in my first visit. (she is no longer there)I had went to a few support group meetings that included a lot of his patients and was very pleased at the high remarks they gave. Dr. Schrock addressed the risks associated with the surgery as well as with the disease of obesity. Yes, my opinion of him has changed as I seen the sense of humor side to him but moreover, DR. SCHROCK IS EXTREMELY SKILLED IN HIS PROFESSION !!! I WOULD RECOMMEND HIM HIGHLY TO ANYONE AT WHO IS CONCIDERING THIS OPERATION. I have healed up nicely, have had no problems whatsoever, and he even took a looky-lou around while he had me open and cleaned up scar tissue (from a c-section) that was attached to my ovary and bladder and had them held tight. I had gone to several doctors complaining of severe pain on my ovay and lack of bladder control for over 4 1/2 years and was told they had no reason other than I must be getting old. (I was only 33 when I started complaining of these things) I am happy to report that I am pain free and bladder is under control since the surgery. BLESS DR. SCHROCK FOR THIS. He tells you and gives you photo copies of things that you need to follow up with after your surgery and face it.... We are the adults we know what needs to be done it's up to us to follow through with the plan and tool he has provided us. Dr. Schrock was also in no hurry to escape from our appointments each time I pulled out my notebook of questions. His surgical competence is unsurpassed.... I really don't think that you could find a better surgeon and overall on a scale of 1 -10 ten being the highest I would rate him a 10 + EXCELLENT A+++++
Dr. Schrock is the type of man who some may be put off by at first -- not much of a talker. At first impression it may seem as though he is not really paying much attention to your personal needs/concerns. However, that is quite untrue in reality.
Dr. Schrock took the time to listen -- even when I thought that he wasn't listening, or that he was pre-occupied. I tried to be "brave" about the fears of having an Open-RXY. Nevertheless, before the end of the our first meeting Dr. Schrock pointed out to me that "several patients have concerns that (I) hadn't brought up." And he asked if I would like to discuss them. This opened the door for me ... without him openly acknowledging what must have been my apparent apprehension and fear.
I was put at ease about all of my fears by the end of our first meeting. And, I had answers to questions that others were asking me as well. Plus, I got to talk a bit about "home". Dr. Schrock attended medical school @ Marquette in Wisconsin ... and I grew up in Wisconsin. That also made me feel a "special" connection with Dr. Schrock. But, that won't be so for everybody -- unless you too are a relocated cheesehead. :-)
The staff in Dr. Schrock's office are all business ... but, take the time to treat you like an individual. They also are very reassuring, and made me feel quite comfortable. A very nice group of people. :-)
I do wish that I had spent more time with Dr. Schrock after my surgery ... not just while I was in the hospital recovering, but in the many months that followed. At the time I lived in Colfax, WA (near Pullman, WA -- home of Washington State University), and Dr. Schrock was in Spokane, WA. I certainly didn't want to make the 3 hour round trip to often ... so, luckily I found a very competant Dr. locally. :-) However, Dr. Schrock's office did call for some time after I got home to assure that I was doing well -- thanks for the concern. :-)
The only "complaint" that I have regarding Dr. Schrock and the surgery is this: He didn't remove my appendix as he said he would. He did remove my gall bladder, and had said that he would also remove my appendix but changed his mind during the surgery. He told me that he actually had his hands on it, but said it was "too shriveled to worry about removing". The only thing I kept thinking -- and still do -- is "Oh, great! Twenty years from now I'm gonna have to have that little sucker pulled out because Dr. Schrock didn't want to "go get it" when I was already open and he had the chance. :-( But, I'm keeping my fingers crossed that he was right in leaving it in there.
Overall, I would say that people that are looking at getting this surgery would do themselves a favor by exploring Dr. Schrock as a potential surgeon. Dr. Schrock won't "hold your hand", unless you want him to do so. But, he will provide you with all of the answers you may have -- and some you most likely never thought about. And, as an extra added bonus :-) Dr. Schrock is a skilled surgeon with an orchestrated scalpel. And, once you get to know him a bit, you will get to understand and appreciate his sense of humor. :-)
At first i really did not like Dr. Schrock, he is not a very out spoken man. But when in the hospital he is just as lively as any person could be and i really liked his attitude and mannerisms. Just great I guess the office is not his element but he hospital is. You can tell he really enjoys making people feel better. I am truly glad i had him for my Dr.
I must say he has no problem answering questions in either situation. But never seems to volunteer much else.
I met with Dr. Shrock on Sept. 30. He answered all my questions (as I had been doing alot of research), even answered about mortality rate of his patients! He was very informative and my husband and I both left feeling our questions were answered. His staff was nice, but they work for other DR's in the same office too, so are really busy. My insurance doesn't need to approve, they just cover it, so I'm just stuck until the office has time to find a surgery date for me.
Well yesterday I had my first visit with Dr. Schrock. When I first arrived at 1:45 pm I was told that there were 3 appointments booked for 2 pm, and Dr. Schrock wasn't expected to arrive until 2:30, well I wasn't excited about sitting around but after nearly 4 months I think I would have spen the night to see him......lol So I began to wait, then much to my suprise only a few moments later I was informed he had arrived, WHEW! I was taken back to the exam room and sat on a table for about 20 minutes (fun fun, that table is hard) then he came in. He said hello and then began asking me all sorts of questions, mostly the same ones I already filled out on the paper. He didn't say much and seemed almost rushed, he did seem knowledgable and all but I felt the visit could have been a little better. Oh well maybe my opinion will change as I see him more, after all I am a talker & not everyone else is. But at least we got the show on the road! He said the main complication he had with patients were hernias, and they were closing poeple up a bit different now to try and take care of that. I would say his compitence out weighs his bedside manner from my first observation, but we will see....:)
On my pre-op visit I though Dr. Schrock was much more personable and I gained alot of his trust, he seemed a much different person in the hospital as well, like he was in his "element"!
I saw Dr. Schrock on the 13th of Aug, 2003 for my first consultation. I liked him a lot! He listened...asked questions...seemed confident in his ablities...and really seemed to care about me and my concerns. He adressed them all!
I have seen more doctors than any one person should have to see in a lifetime. Most are pompus a**es, in my opinion. But, Dr, Schrock seemed very down to earth. He didn't talk down to me. He made me feel better about my surgery, my situation and myself!
Thanks, Dr, Schrock!
As I get to know him I will have more to add...I am sure.
I really liked Dr. Schrock. I had heard that he was very stern, but I did not see that. It takes a few minutes to feel him out, but then you realize that he is a very kind man, and he knows what he is talking about.Sometimes he seems to be in a hurry, but if you speak up and ask more questions he is happy to anwser them for you. I would recomend him to other people. I thought his office staff was great. The nurses are so nice and very helpful with anything you need.
After the events of my hospital stay September 2002, I have returned to Dr. Schrock. I never had any misgivings about him only his office staff and now that has changed and the mere fact that Dr. Schrock saved my life by not doing the surgery at that time I am confident to place my life in his hands once again. He directed me to some very competent specialists who treated my condition and made it possible for me to now reconsider this surgery.
Dr. Rawlins was very personable, friendly and made me fell very comfortable. He is compationate, understanding, enthuasticastic and knowledgable. I am very happy I finally decided to make the switch from Dr. Schrock.
I have nothing negative to say about Dr. Schrock himself. I just feel that Dr. Rawlins is a better match for my personality and needs.
The office staff was very friendly and helpful. And the atmosphere in the office itself was comforting.
At this point there is nothing I did not like about Dr. Rawlins. He meet all my expectations and then some.
We discussed aftercare and some of the things I will need to consider for continued success but not a lot of detail at this point.
Since Dr. Rawlins was so thorough with my visit, I feel sure he will have a structured aftercare program. We did discuss some food issues and what I would be eating in the first few weeks after surgery.
He explained the risks in a very straight forward manner.
Overall I would rate him a 10+.
I want a competent surgeon with good bedside manner. I feel Dr. Rawlins has both of these traits and I feel quite comfortable putting my life in his hands.
My first impression was anger because I had to wait more than 1 hr after the appointment time before he saw me but when he enterd the room he was very polite and kind. He apoligized for his tardyness and began the interview. The staff was very kind and helpfull the office was large so I didn't feel trapped. The doctor went thru all the nesscery info with ease. Make sure you list all of your questions on a piece of paper so you wont forget anything. Make sure you schedule an early appointment it will be less waiting for you. We didnt really talk to much about aftercare other than him reassuring me that a person can be a lot more ambulatory than they think. He never once said anything aboout risks other than to explain some of the side affects.
I rate him a 10 in personality and sincerity
I want to feel secure that my doctor is the kind of person that treats all their patients with human quality I dont want to feel like a pig in the chute.
Over all I would say our meeting went very well He said it would be at least 2 months before I would be scheduled for surgery but I klnow how some things go and he may have a cancleation or 2 and I could have it sooner.
I want anyone who is going to see Dr Schrock to know he is a very polite and kind man. Make sure you are honest with him and ask questions so you can get all you need from the experience...
