Larry Gellman Bariatric Surgeon M.D., F.A.C.S.
Dr. Gellman is the first doctor that I choose from this site. After I called his office and they told me that I needed a referral from my family doctor, I was not sure that I would be able to use him. But after my Insurance company referred me to him I knew that he was the right one. He explained everything that was going to happen and toled me in detail what I had to do and how long everything was going to take. I have referred a friend of mine who wants to have the surgey. Dr. Gellman strongly emphasize aftercare. I have to see him now on a quartly bases. He has support group meeting on the 1st of every month. These meeting are for before and after surgey. I give me an overall rating of a 100%.
You meet with the bariatric coordinator first,Yvonne, she asks which surgery your interested in. Then, takes your info like weight and height. Briefs you on the surgery.Next you go meet the surgeon who again talks about the same thing. Gives you a list off all the tests you have to get done. After getting all of them done you meet them again for a 2nd appt and go over everything and get a sugery date. And thats it!!!!!! I only met Dr. Gellman twice, I hardly know him. He seems nice and He came highly recommended. I know he is a family man, he mad me feel comfortable and it was a casual conversation. I liked him. The hospital they are affiliated with is one of the best in the country. The office and staff is very large, its not just a bariatric office they do many things, everyone is rushing. I felt rushed, not personal. Its like this is what you have to do and thats it. Yes, they went over all the risks, pros and cons of both Lap-Band and Gastric Bypass. I havent had the surgery yet, but he is supposed to be one of the best!!!! We shall see.
I had my surgery and so far so good, I still like him. Not much to say,People say he is great, they have a wonderful reputation, I havent seen anything yet to wow about except my surgery went well and Im doing good. He does not do my fills, I have to go to a radiologist.
My first and lasting impression of Dr Gellman is that he is a caring and compassionate man. He did not rush through the initial consultation as I was expecting. Instead he took his time with me and my sister explaining the surgical options the risks involved with each and potential complications. His office is rather busy and his staff is good but not overly friendly. Yvonne the surgical co ordinator is excellent. She really knows her stuff and since she is the first person I sat down with during the consultation she also left a good impression on me.
The one thing that I don't like is the waiting to see him. No matter what time I've had an appointment with him I've had to wait at least 30 minutes to see him. But believe me it is worth the wait. He emphasizes aftercare very much and there is presurgical as well as post surgical nutritional groups that he requires you to attend. He is an excellent surgeon with an even better bedside manner.
Dr. Gellman makes a great first impression and that never changed - he is honest, upfront and caring. The Office staff has always been helpful and accomodating except in one instance - for my post-surgical appointment I had to wait for nearly two weeks - and I had my drain in. The nurse wouldn't squeeze me in - and when I did have my appointment Dr. Gellman wasn't happy that I waited so long.
I had some post surgical complications and all of the doctors were swift to accomodate immediate appointments in order to make sure I was ok. I especially liked Dr. Palleschi -she was very kind and caring and explained what was happening to me in a way I could undertand and she calmed me down.
Dr. Gellman was unfortunately called away on an emergency immediately after my surgery so I was a little stressed out, but the other members of his practice visited daily.
I first met Dr. Gellman in my first office visit and felt he was very warm and personable. Seemed genuinly interested/concerned. I havn't seen him again - yet.
The staff / office seem very busy, but they still give you the time of day. I havn't had alot of interaction with them yet but I precieve them to be good.
I will complete this at another time.....got to go for now..
My first impression of Dr. Gellman was a positive one. I found him to be a very caring person. I was very confident that I was in good hands. Over time my impression of him did not change. I was in good hands! I found his office staff to be very efficient and met my needs as needed. There was nothing I disliked about him. Any future patients should know that they have a very good doctor, who cares for the well-being of his patients. Having the surgery is the first step and Dr.Gellman emphasizes continuing care and encourages attendance at his aftercare meetings once a month.Dr. Gelman, spelled out all the risks of surgery at our first meeting. He made sure I was aware of the problems that may arise. I would rate Dr. Gelman as a very competent doctor, who cares for his patients. The best attributes are both a surgically competent doctor with a good bedside manner, but If I had to choose one, I would choose a surgically competent doctor. Of course Dr. Gellman is both.
I have absolutely nothing negative to say about Dr. Gellman - he made a great first impression!!! I was informed by his assistant before I spoke with him that my insurance doesn't cover the procedure I want. He was warm, understanding, sincere and sympathetic. He made me feel like I could turn this negative into a positive if I truly wanted to! He advised me that I was a perfect candidate for WLS. On a scale of 1-10 - Dr. Gellman is an 15!
My first appointment with Dr. Gellman was 4/14/03. His assistant, Yvonne, is very knowledgable. She knows everything about preparing for this surgery. Dr. Gellman was very nice and answered all my questions. My second appointment with Dr. Gellman is 9/22/03, at which time I'm sure he will go into greater detail on the procedure.
As of today, 7/31/03, I have completed the all of the tests required for surgery, except a stress test. Am going to attend the support group meeting on 8/4/03.
