Kevin Mitchell Bariatric Surgeon M.D., F.A.C.S.

2/12/01 -- Saw Dr. Mitchell for the first time at the seminar on 2/10. My first impression...wow, he seems incredibly "normal". He did not "talk down" to the audience, was very willing to answer all questions, seemed very honest and sincere. The risks and benefits of surgery were discussed; both with percentage rates of occurances. A member of the audience asked if he had any patients pass away and he said there had been two; one with a pre-existing medical condition that worsened, and one from a major internal infection related to WLS. He went on to explain that he and his partner do their best to determine if each individual is a good candidate for surgery in an effort to keep that number at only two, and reminded us that this proceedure has the same death rate as any major surgery, not higher or lower. One thing I was glad to see was that one of his three post-op patients invited to speak to us was one that did experiance some pretty big complications after surgery and she was able to share those with us. To me, that shows he wanted us to get a full picture of before/after instead of just a glowing report with no blemishes...I appreciated the honesty and reality. He has been in practice since 1993, received specialized training in bariatric surgery and still practices general surgery as well as trauma surgery. Going to the consult on 2/19.

I first met DR Mitchell at a seminar at Forest Park Hospital in July 2000. He was very informative and discussed all the pros and cons of the surgery. I had to wait until January to schedule an appointment to see him because my new insurance did not take effect until then. My first consultation was on January 11. I was prepared for a long wait to see him, but I only had to wait about 45 minutes. I had a long list of questions for him and he took the time to answer each one. He didn't make me feel rushed at all. My greatest concern was that at 56 I might be too old for this surgery but he said that was not a problem and I would do fine. I feel very comfortable knowing that DR Mitchell will be doing my surgery.

I have just contacted Dr Mitchell's office today. His staff seems friendly, Im working with an outside office Weight for Life, to schedule appt, etc. Bonnie and Maria seem quite knowledgable, friendly and efficient. I did want to have the proc done lap but he does not do this proc by lap. The doctors in this area who can do lap are on 6 month wait or longer, and you don't meet the doctor until after your insurance is approved. (I would like to meet the Dr before going that far into a decision and having to start over.) Also, length of surgery can be more for lap and they cant see as well, Dr Mitchell's office scheduled me an appt for Feb 1st!
2/1 Met Dr Mitchell, he was everything I expected, I feel very comfortable with him and his staff. Very friendly and informative.
They are sending my information to Bonnie at WFL. Had to wait about an hour in waiting room, but I was able to chat with others there so it wasnt that bad. 2/5 Bonnie sending info to Ins company, She said it takes 48-72 hrs usually for UHC. Call Monday. 2/10 I attended seminar put on by Dr Mitchel and Weight for Life. It was very good. Told his background, about the risks, has some patients that had surgery there to talk to also. 2/12 Bonnie called and said I was approved!!! We set date for March 6!. Preop testing set for 2/27

I attended a seminar at Forest Park Hospital 2/10/01 Dr. Kevin Mitchell was the speaker. I liked him right away. He gave lots of information and answered lots of questions from everyone with good answers. He did say that he has now done over 400 surgeries with only 2 deaths. Thats kinda scary. But I am trying to stay positive. I had my 1st office consult with Dr. Mitchell on 2/12/01. I drove about 2 hours to his office. The staff was very friendly. I met with him about 10 mins, he again went over the procedure and the process. He did say I would be at fairly low risk since I have no major health problems. Now like everyone else I'm just waiting to hear from my insurance. That will be the deciding factor for me.

Dr.Mitchell is very easy to talk to..I like him alot..I think he will be a good surgeon.
His staff is very nice, and easy to talk to also..I met him at a seminar first..he answered all questions addressed to him..Ive met with him twice now since then..talked with him both times..Ive also talked to him on the phone..Like I have said before..very easy to talk to

I met dr Mitchell at a seminar, and he answered everyones questions very well...There were also people there that have had the surgery before that has kept the wieght off,and that was very impressive..
I then met Dr.Mitchell in his office and he answered all my questions, and I felt very comfortable with him..
Met again with Dr.Mitchell...I was suppose to have surgery tomorrow..and having some problems with my white blood cells..so..I have had to postpone my suregery for a bit longer ..which I would rather do..then take a chance..He answers you directly..and very easy to talk to ..I trust him..and he is very nice...and I am sure a great surgeon...
