I haven't met Dr. Higa as yet. I have an appointment for June and it seems so far away. I have one friend who had her surgery with Dr. Higa. I know from what she has told me that he is the doctor I want. Another reason will be because he is the doctor who accepts my insurance. I have only heard good things about him and am very anxious to get the ball rolling. I feel like I am in limbo. I think I have finally decided to do this and now it is wait. I can do that if that is what it takes.
Dr. Boone is AWESOME. Just loved everything about him after our first consultation. He is so gentle and caring and really takes his time. Jan and Laurie are great too! Very patient and understanding. I must have called to check on things at least twice a week and they always explained things to me. They are very busy so sometimes it's a little difficult to get hold of them. Keep trying!!! Dr. Boone is wonderful. I'm telling some of my friends about him who are considering having this done. Just love him!!!
Dr. Boone is a wonderful person with a good personality and sense of humor. He is young and appears to be somewhat shy, which could cause some to think he is cold. He IS NOT! He was there in pre-op, and knows how to reassure the patient. He was there post-op and in the hospital. This is someone who really cares about his patients! I haven't found many doctors, especially surgeons, with the type of personality Dr. Boone has.
The more I met with him, the more I liked him and felt comfortable. HEY FOLKS, this is serious surgery and will alter your lives, virtually forever. Dr. Boone will help you get there!
As for office staff, I had mixed reactions. Dr. Boone is with Valley Surgical Group and as with any group, staffing problems do happen. I don't particularly care for some of the front people. Last time I there they seem only focused on getting the money and nothing else. The back staff do better with you (now I probably won't get in the door!) They have support if you need it and monthly seminars that are generaly worth while to attend.
I would rate Dr. Boone a 9 out of 10 ( you can't give 10s out so said one of my boot camp CPOs.) There is a structured aftercare program in the seminars and returns to the doctor. Dr. Boone does address the risk of surgery in the seminars. There are also lots of people getting this surgery now, unlike ten years ago, when it was radical.
Dr. Boone is a good surgeon (as far as I can see) and has a fine bedside manner (nice smile too)!
I guess I should add an update about my surgeon since I have already met him for my first consultation. My impression of him was that he was a very quiet yet competent man. The only thing I didnt like was that he didnt really go into the risks of the surgery with me. Well, thats about all I know at this point.
After a lot of research on the internet, I selected Valley Surgical for my surgery. My first choice was Dr. Boone. I first met Dr. Boone when at the information session that is required through Valley Surgical Associates. I found the session very informative and it was nice to meet both Dr. Boone and Dr. Ho. Both were very knowledgable and had a great sense of humor. Laurie and Jan are awesome! You can not make it through this without them. I had my consult in May and received my approval in early July. Dr. Boone will spend as much time as you need and will answer all of your questions. My surgery date is 9/18/00, the day after my 27th birthday. I can not wait.
Dr. Boone is a very quite & reserved man. I went to my consultation and he spent about an hour with me and my husband answering all our questions. He was very thorough and I feel very comfortable with him. His office staff are very professional, busy, and nice. At this point I would highly recommend him as a surgeon and will update you after I have my surgery. I have talked to several other people about Dr. Boone and have had nothing but positive comments regarding his knowledge & expertise.
Well my surgery is over and I have to say that Dr. Boone was fantastic!! He is so kind and caring he even came into preop room and again explained everything that was going to happen and inquired how I was doing. Heck he even held my hand cause I told him that I was getting a wee bit nervous!! Ha ha.. When I got home I had an email from a lady in Florida who is coming all the way to Fresno Ca to have surgery because her brother who is a gastroenterologist (sp) told her that in his opinion they were one of the best in the US for the LAP procedure. This made me feel even more competent that I had selected the right surgeon. I feel surgical competence is great but bedside manner is VERY important as well.
Dr. Boone did a great job of explaining all of my options with their benefits and risks. He was very patient and answered all of our questions. He appears to be a soft spoken man with a quiet sense of humor. Very refreshing qualities for a surgeon! Laurie, patient coordinator, and her asst. Jan, are wonderful. They will answer the same question as many times as you need, and keep smiling while they do it. The front office staff didn't leave that great of an impression, though. I felt like I was bothering them by asking a question.
11/20/98 - I consulted with Dr. Boone yesterday - he's great!! Another advantage is he performs laparoscopic gastric bypass. Dr. Boone is an associate of Dr. Higa's at Valley Surgical Associates, Fresno CA (449-559-3201). He spent 1 1/2 hours with me and was very thorough, ethical, easy to talk with, honest and very knowledgeable. This clinic is very professional, unlike some of the other more well-advertised and very commercial clinic/seminars I have visited. An additional benefit is that they are a preferred provider on my insurance plan. I've decided my search is at an end and Dr. Boone is it - I'm moving ahead with the surgery as soon as insurance approval comes in - the sooner the better!!
4/21/00 - I'm 16 months post op. Dr. Boone has been great to me and followed up with me through some medical problems I've had. His office would call every two weeks to check on me. He's a great doctor. Several other people I know have gone to Dr. Boone and have all really liked him.
I saw Dr. Keith Boone on January 28th, 2000. He was probably a bit surprised to see my husband and 2 daughters in the exam room with me, but when we told him that this surgery was a family decision, he was very impressed that I was including my family in asking and getting answered any questions that they might have. Dr. Boone was very thorough, making sure that I and my family felt comfortable with the decision to proceed with the surgery.

Surgery was text book! Dr. Boone is a kind, caring, extremely considerate person. Came to see me twice a day, and he really listened to how I was feeling. The staff of St. Agnus Medical Center were terrific and understood what I was going through and did everything possible to make me feel comfortable and cared for, phyically and mentally. What a tremendous, positive experience! Do it again? Emphatically YES!
