John Hagen Bariatric Surgeon M.D., F.A.C.S.
I started the process of considering bypass surgery in the summer of 2006. My GP referred me to Dr. Hagen.rnIf I had any questions before my surgery I just called his office & if the office staff didn't know the answer they would put me through to Dr. Hagen or if he was busy, they would get back to me.rnI finally had my surgery on June 13/08. rnDr. Hagen met me in the waiting room for surgical patients. He bent down in front of me & my husband & asked us if we had any questions or concerns. What a nice man. He was calming & reassuring. He met my husband after the surgery was over & again assured him that everything went great. rnDr. Hagen is a gentle man with a great bedside manner.

Met very briefly at initial consultation. He quickly explained process and agreed that I am an ideal candidate before sending me off to his staff to arrange further appointments. He was brief, but I understand I am in GREAT hands with him!rnSo far, the other staff, dietician and social worker have been great, approachable and informative.

Dr Hagen is a soft spoken, kind doctor who fully explained the risks and benefits of the surgery. His office is well run and I have never had to wait to get in for my scheduled appts which to me is very important. I would indeed recommend him to anyone considering this surgery.

Brilliant mind and wonderful hands!rnI had surgery on Friday January 11, 2008; my process took 14 months, from when I first visited Dr. Hagen. In our initial consultation, he explained in details all my options and the follow ups (dietician, physiologist, and internist). Early December 2007, I was informed on surgery date, and also they coordinated all pre-surgery testing for me. It was really simple. I lasted hospitalized only 24 hours, as my recovery was marvelous (no pain at all, not even at the hospital nor later, my liquid diet is going smooth, no hunger). Next week, I will have a routine check out with Dr. Hagen on the second week after the surgery. Also the team’s dietician (Denise Poirier) would contact me for follow up. Dr. Hagen and his team gave another chance to live a life with a quality I always dreamed of. Thus, if you are seriously considering this surgery, I would highly recommend Dr. Hagen’s hands. Should you need deeper comments on the process, please feel free to contact me at [email protected]. rn

I met Dr. H in September 2005, he was quick to the point and said he would see me again after seeing the other drs, social work, and dietician. I was not sure how I felt about him at that point. Anyway it was a year before I got to see him again because of all the appointments required before hand. I seen him again November 30 2006. I was approved for surgery. He seemed much nicer this time. Well, it was about a year before I got the call... October 2007 I got the call for a surgery date. December 18th. I started the optifast on December 4th. The day of surgery I was waiting and Dr. H came up to me with a big smile, put his hand on my shoulder and said .. Dont worry, you will do great... he was so gental and kind. He came to see me the next day, said I was doing great, and could go home the next day. He came again, and was just so understanding and patient with my questions and concerns. IN end, Im happy I choose him, he is wonderful, and with follow up in his office... he is so kind !

Dr. Hagen seemed very busy. Waiting room is always full. He was very straightforward and explained risks of surgery to me. I have probably spoken to him for less than 1 hour total in all the visits I've had with him. There is an aftercare program. For me, surgical competence is more important than bedside manner, (not to say that Dr. Hagen isn't great in this aspect, I just don't know yet). Dr. Hagen is the current Chief of General Surgery and Medical Director of the Bariatric Surgery program at Humber River Regional Hospital where I will be having my surgery. rnI was in the hospital from Friday to Sunday. Dr. Klein came in to see me on Saturday briefly and the only time Dr. Hagen came to see me was on Sunday afternoon to discharge me.
When I first met Dr.Hagen I was so impressed. He is VERY perfessional and no non-sense.He cares about his profession and patients VERY much. Dr.Hagen is one very intelligent, caring, sweet man.
