He's a very nice, caring man who seems to have this surgery perfected. Says he has had no patients with complications (knock on wood). Hope he does a good job on me.

Well I have decided not to use Dr. Barzune even though he is a great surgeon. I have decided to go with another great surgeon and that is Dr. John Alexander. I went to his party he had on 6/30/01 and was informative of the way he works. I have also been signed on to the Alexander website, which I see a ton of people that are extremely grateful for him and adore him. I have my first consult with him on 7/14/01 and I am a little nervous. But my dear friend that I want to call my big sister (as in me being the youngest) will help me get through this. I am do thankful for there to be a tool that can help me not overeat. Now from what I hear about Dr. Alexander he is very very concerned about his patients and he doesn't rush them. Well I will find out in a couple of week. I will post more about him, once I meet him on 7/14/01. 05/30/01 I felt that he was a very sincere person that is concerned with your overall health. He is very straight forward with you. I feel like he is the type of person that will not keep any information from you. He is also very informative about WLS. I have not had a actual consult. I met him through his seminar. People should know that Dr. Barzune has been doing this for a very long time. He states to please follow his regimen and all will work out. He has his own support group where anyone can attend. He emphasized on the risks and the good of WLS. I personally feel that surgical competence and bedside manner are of importance.

I had my surgery with Dr. Alexander on 06/25/01. I was nervous for my EGD he talked me right thru it with no problems. When the morning of the 25th came I was so nervous I had every nurse in the day surgery prep area in my room I was shaking tremedously as well as nausea and vomiting and going to the restroom every 2 minutes. Once his anesthesia person Dr. McGhee and the Surgical Nurse along with Dr. Alexander came in they talked to me and understood how I felt, he spoke to me in his calm manner and said I haven't lost one yet, we are going to do this one step at time. 3 hours later I found he was a keeper of his word. I crossed over to the healthy side without a hitch. I wanted to express to Dr. Alexander thank you for giving me back my life. For not belittling me when I wept like a baby because the time I had anticipated had come. Thank you for giving me the comforting and encouraging word for holding my had and saying without words you deserve this new life now come on and lets get it together. From the time I chose you to do the surgery until after it is over and beyond you were the wind beneth my wings.

Love ya! My husband loves you just as much as I do.

I had first gone to the Bariatric Center in Wylie TX and got lost in the shuffle. In looking on the wls web site I found Dr. Barzune also someone who works for my husband company has gone to the doctor. I attended his seminar along with my husband and mother both are my immediate support team. The seminar was very informative, you know first hand the do and don't and why the different surgeries were not successful. In the seminar you will see people to whom had the surgery 3 years ago 1 year ago and a few weeks ago. I cried because I could relate and found that I was not the only one in the world who felt this way about losing weight and finding a solution one and for all to the problem. I felt joy and visualized once his past patients were giving their testimony that one day that will be me. I suggest to all to attend his seminar and be informed. The overall rating I would give is a 10. The doctor is a perfectionist and believes in doing it write the first time. He is straight forward and tells you like it is, this a quality I liked as well. Because I don't want anyone sugar coating the procedures before and after just to make a buck. I want this surgery to be just as important to that surgeon as it is to me.

Chapter 2 of this story.

Things did not workout with Dr. Barzune after all. I was approved for the surgery on April 26th. Bariatric center sent in the letter and had Cigna working on the approval. In the meantime I had gone to Dr. Barzune's seminar and had decided at this point that he would be the surgeon doing the job. There was a conflict in the paperwork. Cigna approved the surgery but gave permission to the Bariatric Center. After numerous calls Cigna told me to whom the approval letter was sent. Once this was straighten out. And to this day I have yet to hear from the bariatric center to tell me that I have been approved. I had to call Lupe at Dr. Barzune office several times over a week before I got a response. At times when I called she was very short with me. On May 7th I finally got in contact with Lupe who scheduled the initial consultation for June 20th, my approval is only good for 60 days. At the time of my seminar with Dr. Barzune in March I scheduled my vacation with my employer to be the last week in June. I was told at this point that this would be out of the question. In looking thru obesity.com I found Dr. John H Alexander. He was my night in shining armour. First I did not have to come up with close to $2000.00 before I could even have the surgery. Only my consultation fee was out of pocket $205.00. The remaining testing will be billed to my insurance company. No he is not in my network but he did not punish me because I was not wealthy enough to have this just lying around nor did I have to work endless hours prior to surgery to get the money (added pressure). Dr. Alexander told me that he does not expect for me to have the money owed after the insurance company pays and is willing to make payment arrangements to settle the bill. His bedside manner was outstanding and he answered all questions with reassurance. I walked in on Wednesday May 30th for the initial consultation and less than 24 hours my pre op testing and surgery date was given to me by his super office manager Sabrina.... I didn't feel caught up in the shuffle, his office made me feel that this was just as important to him as it was to me. Big cheers to Dr. Alexander and his staff.... I am so impressed that I would not mind working for him myself. That is how much I believe in him.

Dr. Barzune is good and confident and from feedback is a great surgeon but he was not the surgeon for me.

Dr. A is my hero!!!

Plain and simple....he saved my life!
He did my surgery 10/10/2000. If I had not had the surgery, I would have been dead in 2 months. Here is what he did for me:

1) I no longer have Diabetes
2) I no longer have Gastric Reflux
3) I am no longer incontnent
4) I can exercise and I can walk without a walker.
5) I have lost 91 pounds!

Now if he would just tell me what to do with all this extra skin and these awful wrinkles, life would be perfect.
I love you!!!!

Sandy Flowers
and Carla sends her love and respect also!

My Dr is Dr. Alexander in Dallas,Texas
I have only seen him one time. I have
talked with his staff several times and
I am happy with my decision to use him.
He answered all my questions and explained
the procedure so I could understand everything. I have not had my surgery
yet but I feel comfortable with him and
his staff. I will update this after the
surgery.
The only thing I have found negative so
far is I won't see him again until my day.
He did address the risk with me. I reserve
my overall opinion until after surgery.

I had my surgery on June 19,2000 it is now
August 14,2000 and I have lost 38#s.
Dr. Alexander is very nice and seems to care
about how things go. I am glad I used him and would recommend him to anyone.

I love Dr. A and recommend him to everyone that ask about surgery. I can't say too much
for his office staff this year but I think they are getting much better. Everyone was always nice to me. It is just that he has had a lot of changes this year and is just getting the right staff. He wants to see me even though the insurance hasn't paid him yet! I guess that tells a lot about him.
I know that not everyone is pleased with their experience with his office or with him
but I am satisfied greatly. Please get help
from someone if you don't get it from him. I
know from my heart you will be glad if you do.

I have my first appointment with him on October 31 (ooooo creepy huh... well maybe he will give me a treat huh? Like an optimistic outlook and a surgery date!!)

10/31 - I met with Dr. Alexander and I was very impressed. He was very personable and made me feel right at ease with him and the procedure as a whole. He stated he has had no cases with complications and assured me of the success rate and the safety of the surgery. He told me I was a very good candidate and his office would begin the process of sending a medical necessity letter to my insurance company. <crossing fingers>

11/27 - Since my insurance denied me I had spent much time trying to contact my surgeon to seek his advice... left two messages for staff to return my call and one message for Dr Alexander to return my call... this was a week ago and so I gave up on them helping me... wow heard from their office today (surprise surprise!) And I told them about the insurance company change... they said the appeal process would take awhile so I have decided to wait til my new insurance goes in to effect Jan 1 and try this process again... I am prayerful.

1/20 - The surgeons office has been so much better... he hired an insurance specialist who has been so proactive with me and the insurance company... she has been pushing me to get test dates set and evaluations done.. she is wonderful.

I just loved him, he was so considered and kind. His office staff was very nice, and the insurance person Sabrina has had the surgery also, and was very helpful. He emphasized exersize, and being careful not to eat refined sugar, and too much bread and rice. He does not have a structured aftercare program. He did speak about the risks of the surgery. Overall I would rate him on a scale of 1-10 a 8.
